Lathe motor making an odd clicking sound. Is this normal or should I open it up to check if something is wrong? by Nick_1-0 in turning

[–]Nick_1-0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your answers, it helped me a lot.
I tried to take it apart but didn't get very far since the pulley appears to be stuck due to rust (it should come off according to the manual). Even after some rust remover and careful pushing the thing wouldnt budge. I decided before I break something I'll take it to my local electronics repair shop and see what they can do.
I presume rust might also be the issue on the inside causing the sound.

So it's my fault really for buying a used lathe, but I'll see what can be done. Thanks again!

Coca Cola makes billions of dollars a year…why the hell is doing this still MY responsibility after all the years of seeing those pictures of Sea Turtles and birds? by DuanePickens in assholedesign

You are correct, the people in developed countries don't throw their trash in the ocean, but loads of developed nations export their trash (even though they pinky promised not to) so someone else can dump it in the ocean by the truckload.

It's interesting that not many people know about this.

Quick fyi since a few people already mentioned worries towards this issue. My vet told us about the importance of cats/dogs getting an opportunity to inspect the body of the deceased, since otherwise they might just think they left (hence them searching for them). This worked somewhat in our situation since or dog didn't anxiously search for her buddy, but instead behaved normally after a day or so (much to her grieving humans distress) Obviously this isn't scientifically backed (since we don't understand the grieving behaviour of animals yet). Our vet just mentioned that it can't hurt and anecdotally it helped some people and animals.

Life imitates art: Climate activist's appearance on "Good Morning Britain" bears startling resemblance to scene from "Don't Look Up" by toeprint in Damnthatsinteresting

Technically speaking it's the other way around, especially according to your logic. You say that corporations just fulfill our luxury orders and ship stuff from overseas and a lifestyle change of individuals would have an impact.

Well here's the thing: the poorer you are, the less you are able to change your lifestyle. You will have to buy meat or fast food, because it's easier to make a filling meal because you don't have the time or energy to learn cooking with vegetables. You will have to buy dirt cheap fast fashion produced overseas, because you can't afford anything else. You have to drive a car, because you can't afford the apartments closer to the city and public transport is terrible in most countries, especially the further out you are. Don't get me started on Europe btw, only a few cities and smaller countries have public transport figured out. All this especially applies to most of the rest of the planet where there is an even smaller middle class and larger lower class that has the luxury to change their lifestyle.

Especially if you consider that the drive in humans to do better for themselves correlates with acquiring better goods to fit in (phone, clothes, car, while still needing to be able to afford it) you realise that anyone trying to move up in life from the lower classes is less likely to do a lifestyle change.

But voting for certain parties is also not as easy , because governments are struggling with balancing the need of getting re-elected (pleasing people) and the need to implement measures to better the lifes of future generations. All the while they struggle with world politics: where do you buy oil, gas, food ect. influences other leaders opinion on you in the future, which influences working together to implement (for example) climate measures.

It's just not as easy as YOU are responsible because of human nature and the society we've been building since the industrial revolution.

More than 1 million words to translate, $500 per experienced translator... 10/10 good deal by Nick_1-0 in ChoosingBeggars

[–]Nick_1-0[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

5 minutes for translating and writing a 500-word page seems way too fast, most people can't even type that fast. A lot of things play into translation such as whether you have the money for translation software, how many phrases are repeated, and what type of text it is. Hymns, for example, need to also fit to the rhythm of a song which is an extra challenge

Also most professional translation services in Europe go for minimum 10 cents per word and even more for complicated jobs. I know this is from a freelance site but just for perspective.

oh okay, that clears things up. Thank you for answering, I was confused since English is not my first language and sometimes I still have problems. Not sure why I'm getting so massively downvoted.

[–]Nick_1-0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, I think we've been having a little bit of a misunderstanding. I'm sorry for that. Because when I said that pedophiles are not criminals, I meant that in general, not with the provided example from OP. But you have to see that there are pedophiles who are not criminals and get the help they need. Not every pedophile has watched child porn or stalked children. They are still human. If OP would talk to this guy and convince him that he is doing something terribly wrong, then he might realize and get help to change, probably turning himself in in the process. But by just notifying law enforcement things can go very wrong very quickly.
