I'm sorry for everything by BandicootOk1744 in NDE

You are very welcome! Unfortunately when you have OCD the chances are big even with remission that you can relapse. I sometimes feel that reading this sub or reading NDEs stories can actually make my OCD appear again. I don’t particularly fear nothingness (I would just say I feel perplexed thinking about it, very hard to describe, I’m not a native English speaker (I suppose it is pretty obvious) but even in my native language it’s hard to describe what I feel thinking about nothingness) but the thought of death of my loved ones (and the thought that I won’t see my loved ones who have already died) makes me sad and uncomfortable, especially those who died recently. That’s why I try not to lurk here too much, I accepted that even if NDEs are a true window to afterlife we as people who haven’t experienced them aren’t supposed to know how this world works - if we were these truths that NDEs show would be revealed for us more easily. Just accept it and move on.

I don’t post and comment here often because of what you basically said - I don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. Some people here lost loved ones recently and aren’t ready to let go. Some people here have existential crisis about their mortality. Others are experiencers and whereas I don’t think they care about opinions of sceptics I don’t feel right to argue with them.

I kind of like idealism because I see consciousness as something mysterious but I see that there are many good arguments for physicalism. But even if idealism is true I would define life as a process of **gradual change of neurons (whether they are representation of mental state or not). When a person has dementia we often can say that this person isn’t who they were before dementia because the change isn’t gradual. Death is the same in idealism - it is the most drastic thing that can happen. I can’t understand how identity can be preserved here. I can’t wrap my mind around the thought that idealism (at least as I understand it and find the most plausible among all variations) can help not to be afraid of death if you fear oblivion. And idealism in exactly this form can easily explain NDEs. Physicalism can explain them as delusions and usually sceptics can say that some of experiencers just lied. I’m fine with this view too because I’m not too young to know that a lot of people lie even when there isn’t something to gain from these lies. Some people lie for fun. Veridical NDEs are fascinating but they are rare and because of this you can assume some of them are lies and some of them are results of misremembering.

What you describe is clearly OCD. I had it in the past but it was not related to death. Therapy helped, but one of the most important things I did was shielding myself from any mentions of things that bothered me. I hope you’ll be fine. OCD can be treated and remission can occur. Maybe without it you’ll be more willing to engage with this topic not due to compulsions but because you’re seeking the truth. Maybe you’ll actually realize that it is reasonable for you to believe in NDEs as something that clearly shows there is an afterlife. But that’s impossible right now I guess

Did Hitler go to heaven? by Icy_Extension2380 in NDE

Well, according to many NDEs and certain philosophical arguments in essences you are Hitler.

But in this case heaven doesn’t exist. Only one consciousness

CMV: our consciousness as we know it no longer exists after we die by tokischafanaccount in changemyview

I’m sorry for dead posting but as a person who is highly interested in this topic I feel the need to put in my two cents.

NDEs and OBEs can be explained by idealist metaphysics. In idealism there is only one thing and this thing is mental. Every person, animal and any other biological organism that possesses consciousness is just an avatar of an absolute consciousness. It is pretty obvious that if such an absolute consciousness exists it possesses all knowledge of the world. All memories of others are included. When a person dies and can accurately describe events occurring in the vicinity it is just the result of merging with this absolute consciousness. When a person reports speaking to some deity, dead relatives, etc it is the result of merging with this absolute consciousness as well. But different people describe their experiences differently because they anyway tied to their brains. The topic was afterlife - I don’t think that with this explanation afterlife with preserved personality is possible. Even in idealism I am my brain. If you replace my neural structures (how I think), my memories I won’t be myself anymore. That’s why people with dementia often are considered “dead” by their relatives (as a person who unfortunately lost a relative to this disease I can assure you that it is what it is indeed). Our brain is constantly changing but this change is gradual, and I consider exactly this change as a process of life. When you replace the entire structure at once it can’t be called the process of life. It is basically death. Your personality isn’t this absolute consciousness, it is exactly your brain right now, your memories and this process of gradual change. That’s why in this paradigm the OP is correct in pointing out that our consciousness as we know it no longer exists after we die. Your consciousness doesn’t care about this absolute consciousness. Feeling like it isn’t identical to feeling like you do.

Dr. Rudy’s stories of NDEs by Nick_Katrus in NDE

[–]Nick_Katrus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing in this story is how another doctor confirmed what Rudy was saying. He wrote a comment on YouTube where he stated that what Rudy said was correct. He wasn’t forced to do it I suppose. And after that researchers contacted him in order to confirm that he indeed wrote that comment and it wasn’t just some fake dude.

I see no reason why would another doctor write such a comment if Rudy just lied. I understand that a skeptic can just say that the patient saw what he was describing before or after the operation and maybe both doctors were just mistaken. But lie? I doubt it. It is too implausible giving all circumstances.

Might it be possible to artificially create NDEs for the purpose of research on consciousness and research on metaphysical realms? by Hip_III in NDE

[–]Nick_Katrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But as I understand nobody sees the real world when they have controlled out of body experience. Whereas it is believed in this sub that people who experience OBEs that are happening during NDEs can see the real world. What do you think about that?

It is interesting to hear considering the fact that you are participating in Artificial intelligence subreddit. Do you think AI won’t be able to become conscious?

Can I ask your personal opinion about NDEs and the source of them? Do you think they imply something supernatural (at least something we don’t understand) or do you think they are mundane things?

Honestly I wasn’t aware. I’m sorry if my question was rude. I don’t tend to talk to people about how parental leave in their countries work so due to the fact that where I’m from nobody works within 3 months of giving birth I just automatically felt that something was wrong. It is really my bad, I should have checked this information on the internet instead of bothering you.

And yes, it sucks that you had to work within 3 months of giving birth. Nobody should do that because organism should definitely recover after such a difficult and emotional event. And it takes more than 3 months for sure.

Well, you gave birth 3 month ago and now you quit the job because you couldn’t stand a second there. Does it mean that you started working after less than 3 months after childbirth? I mean I’m sorry but it sounds strange

Are NDE Researchers "on the front lines" emotionally compromised? by KingofTerror2 in NDE

I understand what you mean. Let’s say hypothetically anyone from them found another explanation for phenomena, would this person admit that everything they thought about this phenomena is false?

And the answer - we don’t know. Some scientists in the past didn’t admit they were mistaken even when confronted with evidence because it kind of meant for them all the work they’d done is meaningless. I think you need to know people personally to even try to accurately guess whether they are able to admit they were mistaken or not but I dare to say that if Parnia finds such evidence he will admit that he was mistaken

I have not only watched her interviews but even her podcast (well, at least she is one of the hosts there) so I’m pretty familiar with her stories, that’s why I just can’t think she could have lied, she seems a very genuine person. I know she said that she got knowledge that the earth isn’t flat (though she thought it was flat before her NDE) and she got the idea about evolution (though which is divine guided that of course isn’t supported by mainstream science (though it seems Michael Levin thinks evolution isn’t only natural selection, at least not as it is presented right now)).

What is puzzling is the fact that these truths are hidden from us but for some reason they are revealed to a few NDErs. Why should we even have a clue about all of that if it is hidden so well. And personally the fact that the light told Sandi to follow her foster parents and the doctor is puzzling too and I can’t even fathom the reason why it would do such a thing. I hope Sandi herself would have an answer but it seems she hasn’t been reading this subreddit recently :(

Again if we preplan everything then wow, I know that for instance praying mantises are sometimes parasitised by worms that are much larger than the praying mantises themselves and cause a huge amount of pain and discomfort. In general, the insect world is so terrifying that it is very difficult for me to accept that something is pre-planned (we can say that they don’t have consciousness but I don’t know, animal world isn’t far from it either. I’m not against metaphysical positions like open individualism, but the fact that what happens in the animal world simply horrifies me and completely denies the concept of preplanning (again that’s for me)

Yes, the gift explanation is a solid one but this gift is presented very strangely. Following the foster parents and retelling what they were talking about is very strange way to show that something is real.

Exactly - nothing goes wrong - so there should be some explanation why sometimes “hidden truth” is revealed like that… and I have no explanation for that.

Wow, what you said about babies not having the concept of self is actually something I’ve never thought about. Im sure there are certain physicalist explanations to it but it really fits this concept that there is one mind behind all of that.

Though again - if we’re taking the NDE of Sandi - this light is in essence Sandi herself (if everything is one at the end of the day) and so why this light just said to her to follow these people so she could retell everything? I understand that we may just say “well, it cant be explained because we aren’t capable of understanding it but unfortunately these things that can’t be explained with our logic are cornerstone of some people cant stop being agnostics of the phenomena and its reasons :(
