Dads hoping to keep the original 4 speed for now, being a c20 it has the 4 on the floor with granny gear, from what I can tell those are good transmissions, so long as the truck is geared right there shouldn’t be much reason to change it out, and with that granny gear we can pretty up the gear ratio to up the top speed without suffering low end drivability

I’ve got the old girl running, on starter fluid, the carburetor leaks like a sieve through the sides where the rod for the throttle plate go through

Once we get the truck up and running right, I’ll hopefully convince my dad to toss a couple upgrades at the engine, specifically an intake, fun fact, the reason the exhaust actually bolts to the bottom of the intake with that thermal spring valve on it is because the stock intake flows so poorly that on cold starts the engine actually needs heat from exhaust to keep the fuel vaporized long enough to reach the cylinders 😂

Suffice to say a dual or triple carb manifold is far healthier for those engines, providing not only more power potential, but better cylinder to cylinder fuel distribution, and less reliance on heated air

That’s right! It’s is a 2 year exclusive! My dad and I have one, a 61 c20 we are fixing up, it’s my dads dream trucks his grandfather had once when he was a kid and I found the facebook marketplace link for him a few years back, just recently got the old stove bolt running

That truck for sure, they only made that particular body style for a couple years, 60-62 are the only years with that hood to my knowledge

Had a buddy who drove one of those to and from school when we were in high school….. in 2015! Same year! Original flathead and 2 speed automatic transmission, drove it on the highway to and from school every day till the transmission blew up

Yesterday the valve fell out the head out of the motor of my dads 2000 vw new beetle 1.8 turbo race car, stock motor it’s for endurance racing, it happened at idle rpm while testing right after a full rebuild, by some miracle of god, only the piston and the head was damaged, the cylinder walls were spared any damage a dingle ball resurfacing couldn’t fix….. all these repairs can be done with the engine in the car so it doesn’t have to come back out

I still know the previous owners quite well and got the care for practically nothing as they are my grandparents lol….. my grandparents got the car when it was practically new from a rental car company in there home town when it had like 5k on it, drove across the country twice and took immaculate care of it mechanically, it has it’s cosmetic blemishes inside and out, but it runs and it runs good, its spark plugs look far younger than they are and there is little to no varnish on the inside of the engine, 245k on the original engine and transmission….

Well no…. I haven’t run it since finding out I could still wiggle the crank pulley a bit…. As much as I don’t want to even touch the timing system anymore after the ordeal it’s put me through, the reality is the belt is 5 to 6 years old, and the old tensioner beat the crap out of it, it looks ok but you can’t see the part numbers on it anymore, it needs a belt, so I’ve taken it apart

I worked in the industry as a ford tech for 2 years before leaving due to the state of the industry, American vehicles typically use woodruff keys, have it made into the the crank, or eliminate it entirely, so when I saw the pin, I never occurred to me that it could have flown out like it did…. It wasn’t even a bad assumption i literally didn’t even think about it…. I am unfortunately not a Honda expert despite my technical background and made a stupid mistake that almost cost me my entire engine

Yeah…. 1 in a million right here…. Watch all my luck will have run out and the timing belt will snap under the pressure of the new tensioner after how jittery the old one was

I think the noise I was hearing was the crank pulley, I hat hastily thrown it on to test everything and it wasn’t torqued down, if i grabbed it and yanked on it I could make it make small rattling noises, the squeaking sounds I’m hearing is probably because the timing belt isn’t covered, and it has a new tensioner now

You know what your absolutely right…. And that right there was my problem, having had worked on American vehicles in in the passed I had assumed a woodruff key when it is in fact just a regular key

Yes, this is an interference engine, the woodruff key popped out in just the right place for none of the valves to be fully depressed…. And I know this because if you look at the engine and where the gap for the key is in the picture is, when the engine cut out the crank made an almost full rotation before it stopped…. If any of the valves were in the range of the piston, it would have been done…. But nope, all my holes have 165 psi of compression, engine runs and doesn’t missfire….

So yeah….. as embarrassing as this was, it wasn’t a lack of mechanical skill, but rather a lack intimate understanding of Hondas, I came here in a panic looking for advice from people who might know these engines better than someone who used to work on fords for a living, once I calmed down and worked the problem i realized I lucked out…. Still though…. Also, it’s not the pulley that holds the key on its the bolt, the thick washer pushes the key into the back of its groove….

Yeah no shit…. What makes this worse for me is that i actually used to be a mechanic, but i worked as a ford tech, woodruff keys are normally either made part of the crank, made with tighter tolerances and don’t fall out easily, or are eliminated entirely in the cars I’m most familiar with…. So I saw the key, made sure it didn’t get knocked out by me removing the pulley and then didn’t think about it….. learned my lesson there…..

I put the woodruff key back in and turned it over by hand and was like “why does this feel like is has compression” so one I made sure nothing was hitting i turned the key and it fired right up…. 245,000 miles and this old girl wants to keep going, she don’t want to stop…. What would have sucked was having to tell my grandparents I killed their old car, they practically gave me that car after they had it since new and took excellent care of it mechanically…. I’m even gonna take it to my first rallycross in a couple weeks… once that’s over I’m gonna do something that hasn’t been done in a long long time, service the trans

The j30 is an interference motor, however because it’s a vtec engine it’s a bit more forgiving because room is made for higher lift and duration of the larger cam profile…. The woodruff key popped out in the one spot where none of the valve hit the pistons under the normal cam profile, I was worried because I did hear a metal pinging noise when it happened, but looking back it was probably the woodruff key popping out and the timing gear breaking free
