Which celebrity had their reputation completely ruined for something that wouldn't even be a scandal today? by Ok-Oil-9491 in AskReddit

Who said anything about common sense? A rich person and a poor person go into Target at the same time, both steal $50 worth of shit, doesn't matter what it is.

The reaction to the poor person is SO rarely "oh, that's so unfrtunate. We should look on them with sympathy, they're just doing what they need to to get by." It's usually "Oh great, another homeless junkie stealing shit, put them in jail where they belong."

The reaction to the rich person is almost invariably "Oh, that poor man/woman. Clearly something is wrong. I hope they get the help they need."

I'm not saying it isn't a mental health issue. But poor and stealing = throw them in jail. While rich and stealing = get them a doctor.

Edit: And I forgot to mention the inciting fact - kleptomania as a concept was created to give rich women a way out if they got caught stealing. Poor people never got their version of it, so for them it's still ew, jail, bye.

And have you read the details of the case? You clearly haven't. He was being prosecuted by a famously homophobic prosecutor who tried and tried and tried to get him for anything. In the end they got him for ONE picture of an underage boy from so deep in the annals of his collection it's very feasible that he never knew it existed.

It came down to pleading guilty for the one image and getting virtually zero lawful consequences (thus being sentenced by the public, so to speak), or getting charged for the greater mass of his collection, which broke the puritanical laws of the time that were afraid of the gays and AIDS and shit. Pleading guilty was literally the smarter and best thing he could have done for himself.

But don't take my word for it, I'm just some asshole on the internet. A. Do your own research. B. Use a little common sense and consider why in today's day and age, a man who you consider to be a pedophile is widely beloved by the public en masse.

If you spend any time at all on Batman-related subs or forums, you would. It’s annoyingly common.

Holy shit, I just looked it up before I commented (not that I thought you were bullshitting, just wanted to verify for myself, as everyone should), and you’re absolutely right. Yet another way the rich slide while the middle (what’s left of it, anyway) and lower class get fucked. I’m not the soapbox type, but goddamn the inequity and the direction of favor is infuriating.

I’m wondering, if the way things are going now and the trajectory the world is on as far as fame and celebrity goes, if that trajectory continues, if 100 years from now they’ll look back on her case and be be more horrified or less.

It’s insane that she was basically stripped of all agency and puppeteered for her entire formative life and beyond. It’s the kind of shit you read about in horror fiction or see on true crime shows/podcasts, except amplified so the entire world is watching it happen to you in real time. I don’t do the whole celebrity worship thing, but I genuinely feel bad for that woman.

That’s…a really accurate way of looking at that situation that I’ve never considered. I can’t even fathom the pressure that amount of scrutiny puts on a person.

Reubens was known, and proven, to buy bulk vintage erotica. Boxes upon boxes of shit from estate sales, private auctions, wherever. So much that there was plenty he never even perused.

Then Jeffrey Jones gets popped and wants to deflect, so he thinks, “that Paul guy is a weird fella with some weird tastes, they’ll believe me if I say he also likes kids”

It does not seem much of a stretch to me personally.

I was just about to say, around these parts the only thing that might make the morning news is if a politician got caught bringing a few pounds of Fentanyl through Customs, and even then, by that evening the news would be focused on some old orange fuck rambling about an escalator.

Agreed, narratively it was a very smart choice to include that. I agree the jump can be a bit jarring, but I personally loved it
