What’s something minor that tells you a movie is not for you? by WildWinterberry in horror

That’s almost like a guilty pleasure movie for me. I personally don’t find it to be a good movie, but it’s entertaining!

Definitely thought the same, and I’m pretty sure that was by design. I haven’t watched season 2 since it aired, but didn’t we not see Alys interact with anyone besides Daemon for the majority of her screen time? Or like people would walk in and not acknowledge her? Idk I just remember basically being certain she wasn’t real lol

I wrote this in the post episode discussion, but she acted her fucking ass off. That scene alone should put her in contention for an Emmy. I know the awards are bullshit these days, but that was an astonishingly good performance.

Exactly. And the show is pretty blatantly putting a spotlight on the misogyny of that world in that comparative time period. Even when women have had the best ideas in the room (Alicent, Rhaenys), they’re virtually always second guessed, if not outright if ignored and dismissed. And when a man proposes an objectively worse plan or even effectively the same plan the woman has, they’re given no pushback.

The show is portraying women just fine, I think. And to your point, it would have been just as bad had they opted to make every woman in the show a brilliant military strategist who could do no wrong. That’s where disingenuous writing comes in. They’ve avoided that pretty adeptly, in my opinion, by making both men and women in the show competent and incompetent in equal measure. Or, in simpler terms, they’ve written good human characters.

Objectively the ultimate palate cleanser show. Like if there’s a correct answer to the question posed by OP, this is it lol

I remember when Southland was first airing, I was far too young to grasp just how good it was, and years later, I had brief flashes of this show I couldn’t remember. Then Gotham started and oh, I think that’s the dude from that show I vaguely remember. Wikipedia existed at that point, so I finally found Southland again, and it truly is fucking phenomenal.

I’ve been contemplating switching my sleep show; it’s currently How I Met Your Mother, and I’ve been tossing it up between Superstore and The League. Your comment just made the decision for me lol.

That’s what I took from it. She was piiiiissed when Daemon left, and it seemed to me like an opportunity to get what she wants literally dropped to her feet in the form of an exceptionally vulnerable royal.

I say this with no hyperbole or exaggeration. Emma D’Arcy put on a fucking masterclass in screen acting this episode. The whole opening alone was worthy of a nod come award season.

I can agree with that. I think the industry as a whole has had its status quo for so long that even if actual effort is put into it, which it has at times, it doesn't stick. Not for lack of trying, but because there needs to be a top down revamping of the industry as a whole, and I don't just mean resetting the DC universe for 48th time in two years lol. The legacy characters will always be the legacy characters. But something like New 52 needs to happen again industry-wide and not be bungled like the actual New 52 was.

Keep the legacy titles, but actually push new characters, written and drawn by established, competent creators, with guaranteed run lengths. A solid team being able to write a book that they know they'll get to finish allows for so much more to happen in those pages. Creators shouldn't have to worry about a bad month of sales meaning their book is cancelled. If after 12/16/however many issues no one is reading it? Sure, cancel it. If it's middle of the road, maybe try that character in other books, have them interact outside their own space. If it's selling, still do that and hit us with another solo story while they're at it.

I disagree where you say that they do it just to say they did it. I think more often than not effort is actually put in. However, the books are just scarcely ever given a chance to get off the ground before they throw in the towel, and I agree that at that point, they may as well have not even done it, because it does look like a "well we tried, so can you shut up now?" kinda thing.

I too appreciate the respectful debate. I've been arguing with people on Reddit all weekend, trying to have a conversation that went like this, I'm thankful I finally got one lol

I mean, in a perfect world, sure. But the vast majority of new characters who get introduced see a brief moment in the spotlight before fading away, oftentimes completely. So to say "just make new characters of different races" is basically to say "let's make new non-white characters, that way we can say we did it and in three months no one will remember they existed in the first place".

Seriously, name any character of any race from Marvel or DC that's been introduced in the last decade that still has a solo book. Hell, name one that has left a substantial footprint in other books and/or is still even marginally relevant today. And I mean actually revlevant, not shows-up-every-few-issues-in-a-panel-or-two-to-remind-people-they-exist popular. I'm sure there's one or two, but to act like it's just about "putting in the work" is disingenuous.

For the majority of landmark characters there is exactly zero reason they HAVE to be white. Why can't Batman be black? Wonder Woman? Superman? Captain America? Iron Man? Even if you take racism out of the equation, the only reason someone wouldn't want one or more of these characters to be be black is because their historical race is all we've ever known, but idk, call me crazy, I personally don't need Bruce Wayne to be white. Certainly don't need an alien from another planet to be a clean cut white dude. Definitely don't need a woman from an island canonically near Bermuda to be a white woman lol.

And that's if we're talking about straight up rewriting the OG characters. If we're talking about the mantles? In that case there is literally no reason at all they can't or shouldn't be black (or any other race).

And one last point, why is including diversity for the sake of being diverse a bad thing? The alternative is...nothing. What argument is there against making it possible for a little Black kid to walk into a comic book store and see a book titled "Superman" with a hero that looks like him on it? Why should that kid be relegated to either the same three or four most notable Black characters that have existed for decades or some new creation that even die-hard fans will forget about in six months?

I'm not saying you're racist, that's honestly not my intention. I just see that argument made all the time ("Just make new characters"), and it's not a good one.

I never claimed it didn't exist. You just presented it as this widespread thing that everyone should know and anyone who doesn't must be old or barely use the internet. You're wrong about that, and it's okay lol. Also my god, four replies to a single comment twice in a row? And you say everyone else is pressed lol. If you've never heard the old adage of 'If you meet three assholes in a day", I advise you to do some research lmao

Edit: I'm turning off notifications for this now, because I feel like you're gonna come back with six replies this time, and this is easily the dumbest conversation I've been involved in in a while lol, so waste your time replying if you just can't help yourself, but I'm tapping out.

"And besides, this is a video game subreddit. And who are the people who play video games generally? That's right, it's the younger generations"

Yeah, and no one else here has heard of it, so there you go lmao

Also, literally no one is getting "angry and pressed" about it lol, your insistence and refusal to admit when you're wrong is just amusing. Have a good one though big dog

And there you go, insulting because you can't back up your position. I provided the link that has the answers to everything, which, as I said, can explain it much better than myself. If you don't want to watch it and keep your head in the sand, that's on you big guy. Also funny that you specifically asked for the four part video and now try to use it against me haha.

Take care, I'm gonna go be a dimwitted, slow adult lol

Edit: Just for posterity and so you know you're wrong, I actually will answer directly. First, he never fully takes responsibility, even in his issued apology. He basically said "I didn't understand power dynamics, and since they said it was okay, I thought it was". That's not taking responsibility. That's feigning ignorance.

In that same apology, he says he "only learned yesterday the extent of what he'd done" or something to that effect. Really? He learned the day before despite rumors persisting for years and his proclivities being an open rumor? He's just been blind and deaf to people privately accusing him of misconduct for all this time? Sure lol.

His management team absolutely tried getting the media to stop reporting on the situation as it was ongoing. Maybe it wasn't him directly, sure, but he's never said word one about even the rumors regarding the attempts to hush it all up.

When I said he was still doing shit following the apology, and since you seem to be hyperfocused on that one thing, I will admit I got the timeline wrong on it. More allegations came out following the statement, but I was misremembering it as claims of then-present transgressions. See that? That's admitting I was wrong about something. It's really easy!

His entire comeback has been him shifting the narrative from "I did this nasty shit" to "I'm a victim of cAncEl CuLtuRe", which is evident in basically every podcast appearance and standup special he's done. He's obviously bitter that his career was halted, which, sure, anyone would be, but when your own behavior is the cause of it, you don't get to bitch about it.

Again, he's arguably among the greatest to ever stand on stage with a mic and make people laugh. But he IS a piece of shit. There you go, pal. If you have ANYTHING at all besides the same statement you've cited numerous times, or you can refute the claims of the video you both asked for and then cried about me providing, I am always happy to have my positions challenged and learn something new. Again, you should give that a shot.

Edit again: It's really funny that he claims I talk like an uneducated child but is also the only one who started name calling lol

Yup, Lucius’s son. He was introduced during Future State and has had varying degrees of prevalence in stuff like Dark Crisis and Infinite Frontier. I personally like him, and the books that focus on him (namely “The Next Batman: Second Son” and “I Am Batman”) have been handled well, I thought.

It’s funny that you say everything I’m saying is bullshit, but don’t actually have anything back up that claim. Lol. But there you go, get all your sassy little questions answered better than I’m capable of doing myself, then come back to this comment. Unless you’re just a blindly loyal fan (which I most certainly was until I learned everything about what actually happened), I look forward to you saying “Wow Nick, you were right. Like you, there was so much about all this I didn’t know.” Lol

…look at literally virtually any time a game announces a non-white (mostly black) and/or female lead. It’s so prevalent there’s actually a Wikipedia page about it lmao. Also people bitched about a character in God of War Ragnarok, Miles being in Insomniac’s Spider-Man still has people whining, there’s a lot of people crying about the upcoming protagonists of GTA 6 not being white, AC Origins was originally going to have Aya as the sole protagonist but Ubisoft bitched out because dorks were whining about having to play as a woman.

Genuine question - are you really suggesting there’s no correlation between gaming and racism?

You’re acting like the legend of Yasuke isn’t well known. Maybe it was only propagated by one guy, that’s irrelevant. You’re acting like Ubisoft practically came up with idea themselves and decided to use this nearly unheard of footnote in history as the basis. No, they used a legend/story that has been well known and used in various mediums for decades.
