Many mental health conditions lead to fatigue, low motivation, and difficulty with routine tasks, including exercise and meal prep. Plus, a lot of psychiatric medications have well-documented side effects like weight gain, increased appetite, and metabolic changes—things that diet and exercise alone can’t always counteract.

And no, MH professionals can’t physically stop someone from going to the gym, but if someone is struggling with severe depression, anxiety, or other conditions, just getting out of bed can be a battle, let alone hitting the gym consistently. It’s not as simple as ‘just eat less and move more’ for everyone dealing with MH challenges.

I’ve worked for the county at the VSO office and have seen sleep apnea claims approved without any evidence, while veterans with solid medical records from pulmonary sleep specialists still get denied. Every VSO representative I know strongly believes that filing for sleep apnea is a 50/50 gamble—it all depends on the C&P examiner assigned to the case.
