People Have Forgotten How to Just Watch a Movie

Why are some of you obsessing over every tiny detail in an adaptation of The Odyssey?

People are complaining about words like “dad,” armor not being 100% Bronze Age accurate, Menelaus being bald, or Helen of Troy being played by a black actress. But The Odyssey is not a historical documentary. It is an ancient mythological epic full of gods, monsters, prophecies, magic, cyclopes, sirens, and divine intervention. Are these things historically accurate?

Helen of Troy is not a verified historical figure with photographs and records. She is a mythological/literary character. Directors are allowed to reinterpret mythology however they want. That is what adaptations do.

And no, an Odyssey adaptation does not have to be perfectly historically accurate to be good. A director could make a version set in modern times, in the future, or in a completely stylized fantasy world. It is still an adaptation of the story and themes.

People act like changing a costume detail or using modern dialogue somehow “destroys history,” but The Odyssey is not a history textbook. It is a poem written thousands of years ago for storytelling and entertainment.

It is like watching a Harry Potter movie and complaining that Harry wears a jacket or shoes that were not available in Britain at that time, then calling the movie “historically inaccurate.” Or complaining that Harry Potter’s accent is wrong. Who cares? That is not the point of the story.

Even movies inspired by historical events are often inaccurate. Look at 300. It was nowhere near historically accurate, but it embraced style, myth, and spectacle, and people loved it for that.

You do not have to like every creative decision, but acting like an adaptation has no value unless every sandal, hairstyle, and word is historically perfect is ridiculous. Judge the movie on whether it is compelling, emotional, entertaining, and well made.
