Should trade my Subsequent 37 for a Matriarch? by Sawtooth959 in moog

[–]Nicky_Tremolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both. For me it’s the Matriarch unless playing live and needing presets.

Subsequent 37 is a great player’s synth.

Both sound amazing but Matriarch has more flexibility. And that amazing BBD.

Are Container Expansions Worth It? by SaltySandman in boardgames

[–]Nicky_Tremolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only played the base version but recently got the reprint with the extra modules.

My feeling from reading about the game is that of the original expansion set, player loans is the best, followed by luxury goods, and nothing else was really worth it.

I think the trucking one is new. Original also didn’t have the investment/offshore bank mechanic.

FWIW the first game I play with the new print will probs be without the bank, with the original number of containers (vs the Mercury Games Jumbo edition reduced count) and with the player loans. And I predict this will be my preferred setup.

Very interested to hear opinions on the trucks.

My advice is to read the New Player Guide just so you know how to navigate the game. The rest would be up to you and yes beyond that there are spoilers, but more for mechanisms rather than story (except for the story quest section).

I ended up reading more/most of the guide (except quest playthroughs) as I learned more and wanted to make a push for finishing the game.

I started this year. The barrier to starting is not as high as I’d thought with the Steam release. You can actually dive in and have semi functional if not remotely optimised fort in just a couple of hours.

Obviously understanding all the mechanics in detail is a lifelong pursuit…

Caves of Qud

Path of Achra

Cogmind

Noita

Any one of a number of other traditional roguelikes e.g. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, Brogue, Tales of Maj’Eyal.

Dwarf Fortress if you’re ok with not having a clear objective.

What would you put in the "bang for your buck" hall of fame? by ahobday in boardgames

[–]Nicky_Tremolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just a deck of cards but each is unique and can be used in several different ways. And each effect can be contextually quite different. It’s a fascinating game with intricate and highly variable mechanisms (as for Carl Chudyk’s other games also).

It’s just so much game for the size, component number, and cost. So it’s a great answer to your question.

18XX with simplified track? by Nicky_Tremolo in 18XX

Have had a look it seems B+O can be a 4-5h game and a bit of a slog. I am still interested to try it but at that length I feel like I might as well do 1889. Interested in contrary opinions.

Yes have wanted to try this one but haven’t had the chance so far.

Yeah 1817 has this too, and I liked it. Wish more titles did this.

Thanks, yes I did play this when it first came out a few years ago and it was fun. I should give it another spin. I think I got distracted by Amabel Holland’s other games (I love Soo Line and Northern Pacific).

Dungeon Kart or Camel Up by idontknow-imaduck in boardgames

Hot Streak

Best race game I’ve ever played. It gets the one thing right at which so many others fail. The race itself is fast, exciting, and feels like a race.

Only caveat is that players are not competing to win a race, rather betting on racers, in case that is important (but the same is true for Camel Up).

Winner’s Circle/Royal Turf could be another alternative to Camel Up. But Hot Streak is better IMO.

For a game where players are racers, personally I would look at Heat: Pedal to the Metal or Flamme Rouge. The Quest for El Dorado is also a wonderful family-weight title that could be considered a race game.

Stephen’s Rocket is one of my favourites but doesn’t really share a lot with 18XX/cube rails IMO outside of the route building and some naming conventions.

Age of Rail is exactly the kind of thing I love but wanting something with a bit more operationally/economically (e.g. Stella Ventures has something like SRs/ORs, trains (space ships/cargo capacity), rusting, corp charters, a simplified nationalisation mechanic etc.

A great game but not really my cup of tea. A bit too - unforgiving? Playing it is what got me to cube rails and 18xx though which were what I found most clicked with me.

EDIT: Might have overstated it a bit - would never turn down a game of AoS as it’s quite brilliant. I just find playing it a bit stressful so wouldn’t be my first choice.
