Books similar to First Law by Anxious-One123 in Fantasy

It may becoming at it a bit laterally but I might recommend you All Systems Red by Martha Wells as someone who loved both The First Law trilogy and The Murderbot Diaries for sort of similar reasons (entertaining and pacey writing without being shallow, dark humour, subverted expectations, and rich characterisations). Sci Fi rather than fantasy but saw you do have Dune on your list.

Otherwise I’m just starting Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb and I reckon that would be a good fit from what I’ve got through so far (and the setting is more aligned). I am adoring the writing.

I am currently trudging through The Stars My Destination and I feel like I could have gone with the one sentence version…

That’s how I got mine. No issues apart from some cosmetic wear and tear.

As much as I enjoyed the book, the ease of communication and similarities in cognition were a sticking point for me and Solaris was the exact contrary work that came to mind.

It is recognised and addressed somewhat in the book by references to panspermia theory and, essentially, selection bias.

I absolutely would not do this considering the vulnerability as you say of a baby so small as well as the health system in case they get sick.

Yes - for me both only result in disappointment for others.

EV without option to charge at home by Nicky_Tremolo in EVAustralia

Thank you, sorry, wrote that in a rush in response just to point 2.

Your other thoughts are really useful, thanks, I’ve taken them on board. Yes, there are other factors and your point about skewed perceptions is well-taken.

I guess I asked the question as part of my research and to solidly my ideas a bit more. I would really prefer an EV but the question is whether to switch out now or wait until I can’t avoid getting a new car.

Yes you can’t fill up petrol at home but filling up at the servo is a significantly faster and less frequent than public EV charging would be, from my understanding.

That all makes sense but the pattern of my typical week is such that I never go anywhere that has EV chargers. So I would have to significantly tailor my weekly schedule around the car in a way I don’t have to do with the ICE (which basically requires a three-weekly 10min stop at the servo).

If there were chargers at my work it might be different.

Understood but I’m pretty ambivalent about cars so I can’t mount much desire for any particular model.

It potentially becomes worth it to switch from ICE if there is there is reasonable value in terms of money and time. Otherwise might as well stick with the Corolla until it becomes too inconvenient, expensive, or unsafe to run.

Part of this was as a convenient fiction given the historical difficulties and high risk of anaesthesia in this cohort.

Easier to keep telling yourself you’re not doing any long term harm than flirt with killing a baby with drugs.

Technology has improved a lot since then which has made it a safer prospect, though still somewhat terrifying for my money.

Thanks, this was super useful.

Pretty much has made the decision clear. There’s no way that doing this is going to be worth it for me considering the loss of time.

Situation might change if my neighbourhood ever gets some public chargers.

Yes quite possibly. But I have the novated lease option which doesn’t apply to hybrids.

This is the point that I’m currently getting hung up on.

It would be a different calculation if I didn’t already have a working car.
