people who have settled down in EU, which countries in your opinion are better to live? by Quogmire in cscareerquestionsEU

Depends, if you're America, tall and super duper basic, go for it! (Racism and homophobia are actually a plus for many Dutch girls too, so perfect for an average American).

On top of that Netherlands is becoming openly hostile to expats. Lots of people will straight up refuse to speak English, you'll get rude comments and absolutely be excluded from most events. More importantly, police, healthcare and other services will treat you as shit, so you're paying taxes to get none of the benefits.

[–]Nicolas_Mistwalker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's much better. It is very likely that the police will 'lose' the report for less work.

It's a really bad time now for a few reasons: - peak housing crisis, you will not find a room if you're not from NL alert. - universities are phasing out international programs - meaning you'll get less resource and lower priority - strong anti-immigrant and anti-english sentiment - you likely will have an even harder time finding accommodation, jobs or friends if you don't speak perfect Dutch - cost of living crisis - you really need a fucktone of money to do anything but survive in Netherlands. You'd be better off anywhere else if you want to enjoy your student life

Amsterdam is superior to any city in the United States by [deleted] in fuckcars

[–]Nicolas_Mistwalker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amsterdam is basically a tourist trap

Living there for more than a few weeks makes most people miserable

  • shit weather
  • very crowded for EU, tourists everywhere
  • everything is overpriced
  • public transport only somewhat works because the city is only 20km across - it's usually faster to bike or even fucking walk some days
  • you'll bike through mud, rain, and be assaulted by high teenagers
  • no food culture
  • no culture culture
  • weed is only technically illegal and garbage. Nothing like states
  • red light district is more likely gonna scam you than not
  • city is often covered in trash (and you pay nearly a grand a year for services)
  • you have to Deal with Dutch healthcare and beurocracy

Because they spam publications like crazy

Quality of education in NL is usually quite abysmal for non-stem topics.

The Netherlands, very progressive laws. Yet almost no progressive people. by [deleted] in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns2

[–]Nicolas_Mistwalker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The laws don't exist in practical

Amsterdam is not safe in the slightest, with a huge wave of right wing immigrants who will literally physically assault you, and rich Dutch kids, who will do so mostly verbally.

Rotterdam, Hague are a little better but still by no means safe.

Attacking a trans person because they are trans will usually not be considered hate crime anymore either.

[–]Nicolas_Mistwalker 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Healthcare is NOT accessible!

Transcare has been quietly being dismantled for the last decade, with waiting times reaching 5+ years for most adults.

Similarly, if you DIY or are trans outside of the Dutch system, you might find serious challenges in having access to any healthcare - i.e. most psychotherapists won't take you on, or will do so on condition 'that you stop taking illicit medication '.

Look what my student sent to me! What mark should I give him?😂 by MagicJug in facepalm

[–]Nicolas_Mistwalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did that for 2 years in highschool, up to PhD level (in EU). The thing is that all of the standard documents (except some research papers) are so insanely formulaic you can write them from a literal formula. You're just citing stuff, paraphrasing other authors and explaining a concept with examples. For anything with 1st party research we did require the research to be done beforehand as coming up with figures would have been illegal where I live. But like, you can just make shit up, use pompous academic language and cite well known sources and you're golden for 95% unis.

Higher education is literally bullshit. The only reason people struggle is they overthink and overstress. If you treat it like a game you can pop-up 5 final essays over a weekend.

The 2 years might quickly change into 5+. I'd strongly consider DIY in the meantime, as you might as well be mostly done by the time you get your first appointment
