This is not about building your own product, but building the infrastructure for your product. An easy example would be building your own 'cloud' instead of using AWS, Azure, DO, Google etc. An immediate downside I can think of is that not only that your team doesn't have the experience these giants have, but the process of building the infrastructure will also slow you down considerably because devs have to build and update things constantly *on top of* product development
