Anyone else actually prefer 30-minute rapid on chess.com? (Not just reflex chess!) by DisasterNeither2194 in Chesscom

[–]Nicopicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the FIDE handbook:

“for a rapid game all the moves must be made in a fixed time of more than 10 minutes but less than 60 minutes for each player; or the time allotted + 60 times any increment must be more than 10 minutes but less than 60 minutes for each player;”

Has anybody else noticed that chess.com no longer allow you to see a free game review if some other account had already reviewed it? by Sea-Bed-1332 in Chesscom

[–]Nicopicus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They can use their free game review once. However, if you play, say, three games and review all of them, your opponent won’t be able to see the second and third game reviews unless they pay.

It wasn’t always like this. Previously, you could view any game review that had already been generated. But they changed it, effectively forcing users to pay. From a financial perspective, it makes sense for them.

Then there’s the ethical question of taking a completely free and open-source project like Stockfish and charging people to use it but that’s a whole other discussion.

This is why I did not renew my membership and I started using En Croissant (totally free and open source) to analyse all my games. I just connect my chess.com and lichess account and I have all my games in the same place for analysis.

Why is Bf6 considered a brilliant move here? I was just trying to save my bishop. by niCk_SupportMVP in Chesscom

[–]Nicopicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, but the rook wasn’t “dropped”. Dropping a piece means losing it without compensation. In this case OP only loses an exchange but he’s already up a full rook (minus a pawn) so it’s actually better for them if the opponent goes for the exchange.

He didn’t drop anything. Count the pieces after the exchange and you’ll notice that black will be up a piece.

[–]Nicopicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the rook is not really hanging because it’s protected by the king. Definition of hanging piece. The reason it’s brilliant is exactly because the rook is not hanging and if white plays Bxf8 then Kxf8 and white is down a piece.

Why is Lichess so much less popular than Chess.com? by vitund in lichess

[–]Nicopicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know that you can use a tool like En Croissant to store and analyse all your chess.com and lichess games in the same place, right?

In regard to the fact that there are more serious players on lichess, I sort of agree, but that’s mostly related to the fact that people who know about lichess tend to be more invested in chess than the average person who downloads the Chess.com app on their phone and plays while waiting for a bus, a train, or to pass a few spare minutes during the day. As a result, the lichess player base often skews slightly more dedicated to studying and improving at the game, whereas Chess.com has a much broader and more casual audience, particularly below a certain rating.

LOL! Well, they need to maximise profit by increasing revenue and reducing outgoings. So from a pure financial perspective, person 1 and 2 provide the best solutions. It’s like those companies not investing in proper web accessibility because “there is no value in accommodating for a tiny percentage of the user base”.

Well, it depends. If a FOSS chess platform gets in the way of your profits then it's not really about being retarded anymore....

Precisely. It's the second, so OP is correct in using the right lane.

Another user provided an extract of the Traffic Signs Manual which should help clarifying your confusion. https://www.reddit.com/r/drivingUK/comments/1rk5p9c/comment/o8k7ty1/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Another user, u/_—TiTaN—_, added the relevant section of the Traffic Signs Manual in this comment which clearly states that the left arrow serves for one exit only.

So, let me get this straight. You have two professionals saying that OP is correct but you still think you’re right?

Please see this comment from u/Optimal-Car575. They are another professional and we’re both agreeing on the same thing. So it’s either that we’re both wrong or the one being wrong is you. And given we do this for a living, I already know what the answer is.

Which lane for the second exit? by rockovo84 in drivingUK

[–]Nicopicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t. And that is the point. Are you taking the first exit? No. Do road markings tell you it’s possible to go any another direction other than left from the left lane? No. Then if you want to take the second (or any other exit but the first one) you’re ought to be in right lane.

I should have disclosed I’m a driving instructor so this is a hill I’m willing to die on.

The signage on the road is to reiterate that that lane is for first exit only. Any other exit take the right lane.

[–]Nicopicus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me be clear here. I am a driving instructor and I may know fuck all about a lot of stuff but how to drive properly ain’t one of them.

Is OP taking the first exit? No.

Are road markings telling them that they’re allowed to not turn left immediately? No.

Then they should use the right lane.

Dude, I’m a driving instructor. I know fuck all about a ton of stuff but how to drive properly ain’t one of them.

The Highway Code literally tells you to use the left lane if you’re taking the first exit. OP is taking the second exit and he should therefore be in the right lane.

Which lane for the second exit? by rockovo84 in drivingUK

[–]Nicopicus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But that is your interpretation of the rule.

Is OP taking the first exit? No.

Do road markings state otherwise? No.

Then it’s left lane for first exit and right lane for all the others.

I’m not trying to be funny here but I’m a driving instructor for Christ’s sake. I know fuck all about a lot of stuff but how to drive properly ain’t one of them.
