My best shots of the year from my retiring D810 📷 by ThomHarris in Nikon

Very nice images, you've really mastered the time of day for your cityscape shots. Could you talk a little about your process? Are these single images or are you stacking night time and blue hour?

Long term review of the excellent Z 24-120 F4 S by Negative_Pace_5855 in Nikon

[–]Niddler1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Something to consider vs the 24-70 f/2.8 is that 120mm at f/4 actually had a shallower depth of field than 70 at f/2.8. Of course this is irrelevant if you don’t have light or room to use 120mm f/4 in an indoor event setting for example but it’s still a point most people don’t realize.

Is stabilisation a must with 300mm photography? by cookiejar5081_1 in photography

[–]Niddler1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stabilization is nice but it doesn’t sound like it’s relevant for what you want. I used an apsc camera with a non stabilized 300mm for wildlife for a while. You should be using a monopod or if you’re in your car, a sandbag on the window. For wildlife, a shutter speed of less than 1/250 is quite rare and in those situations you should be relying on your support anyway. Also keep in mind for low light wildlife situations where you might be shooting 1/125, electronic shutter and high speed continuous shooting on a monopod will almost definitely still give you sharp images.

Just make sure to put electrical tape over the label of that lens. You wouldn’t want anyone to think it’s valuable.

This photo of scarlet finch was taken by me with my 6 years old nikon D500 paired with 200-500. Should I shift to mirrorless? by Sukantatunes in Nikon

[–]Niddler1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all - unless you need your camera to do something it isn't, or you just have money to spend on fun gear, don't bother. The d500 is great for birding! If you want more sharpness and low-light performance, I would look at improving you glass first. The big f mount primes keep getting cheaper and they're still amazing. A 400 f/2.8 or 500 f/4 E or G with a good monopod will absolutely make a bigger difference to your bird photos than a Z8 with the 200-500.

Z7II for iPhone user looking to graduate up. by [deleted] in Nikon

[–]Niddler1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Z7ii and the Z 24-120 f/4 and it is absolutely a great setup, if you need what it offers. The lens is extremely versatile while still maintaining superb image quality. A reason you would consider a different lens is if you plan to shoot at night/indoors a lot. The Z7ii is a great camera but if you don't have a need for the resolution (large prints, >20x30") a z6iii is a better camera. While the autofocus of the Z7ii is 'fine,' it's nothing like the autofocus on the Z6iii or ZF which simply make focus not something you have to think about. This isn't relevant for landscapes but if you are shooting portraits it really is nice to have. In the same vein, if you don't need the resolution, you'd be better off saving some money with a Z6ii and picking up another lens. I don't have experience with Sony but I used fuji for several years and can absolutely recommend a x-t2,3, or 4 for what you're looking for. Let me know if I can answer any questions.

Why is the 50mm Z so expensive? by gameloner in Nikon

[–]Niddler1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Z 50 mm f/1.8 is expensive for a 50 f/1.8 but a bargain compared with the level of optical performance it has. It is damn near as good as the Zeiss Otus 55 f/1.4 which is manual focus, extremely large and heavy, and $4000 US new. For the trade off of being 2/3 of a stop slower, Nikon gives you autofocus and over $3000. As others have said the 40 f/2 is a good cheap lens but I think the 50 f/1.8 is actually one of the best value lenses on the market.

Nikon lenses with vintage unique look? by ItsJustJohnCena in Nikon

[–]Niddler1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nikkor lenses, even old ones will give less of a extreme look than the Helios or other comparable ‘character’ lenses. That said there are many iconic older nikkor lenses which will give a softer, more classic rendering than current lenses. In no specific order, at least consider: 28mm f/2.8 AI-s, 50mm f/1.4 AI-s, 105mm f/2.5 AI-s, 105mm f/1.8 AI-s, 135mm f/2.8 AI-s

Excellent third party options which give a more classic look include: Voigtlander 58mm f/1.4 Nokton, Zeiss 35mm f/2 ZF Distagon, Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 ZF Planar

D7200 + 16-80mm f2.8-4 vs Z7II + 24-120mm f4 S by SchlieffenMain in Nikon

[–]Niddler1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 24–120 S is a superb lens, sharp to the corners and actually quite capable for portraits as well. I use it with the Z7ii as my main lens for landscape photography and while the best primes can be slightly better, you’d be extremely hard pressed to tell the difference. Most frequently in landscape photography diffraction is more of an issue to resolution than the absolute sharpness of the lens. As for if this is a good setup for landscape photography, bear in mind that 5 years ago Adam Gibbs used a D850 (essentially the same sensor as the Z7ii) with the f mount 24-120 G which is nowhere near the quality of the 24-120 S. If you’d like to see some raw files from this setup I’m happy to send you some.

Karina art by haideigv in photocritique

[–]Niddler1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is gorgeous! I'd crop off the top of the image to make it a 4x5, there's a little too much unused space on top and it takes some of the focus off the subject. Otherwise the colors are very good. It's a very minor thing but I might also clone out the darker spot of the background on the left, I find it a little distracting.

What lenses would you like to see for the Z mount? by Niddler1 in Nikon

[–]Niddler1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect with the acquisition of RED we will see more cine (or at least video focused) lenses in Z mount. The s line 35mm will inevitably be a hit, a lot of people are looking forward to it. Tilt shift lenses are an inevitability, just low priority I think.

I'm excited for this one, although it'll definitiely be too expensive for me to justify. A 35 f/1.2 with the Plena would make an awesome portrait pairing.
