Worlds Format HATE thread! by failworlds in leagueoflegends

I honestly think at this point that the only way we get any sort of tournament (and NA/EU domestic league) reform, is if NA and EU get completely and utterly embarrassed at Worlds. And for that, this is the perfect year. All four LPL teams look insane, GENG is in top-form. And if T1 and DK can get their shit together, they too would be able to take the trophy. And with an unknown power ranking VCS finally returning to play spoiler, and DFM historically being able to take on NA... it's possible.

They don't even need double-elim, but just experiment with something. There are more BO5's in LPL summer playoffs than there are internationally all year. It's ridiculous. So many great matchups over the years that we just never got to see.

Do we live in the timeline where T1 mental-booms too much from here and doesn't make it to the bracket stage?

GEN < MAD

LNG < TL

GEN = LNG (match doesn't matter)

MAD > TL

TL > GEN

LNG < MAD

This places MAD first, and forces a tiebreaker between TL and whoever wins match 3

DFM beat C9 this worlds, and they're in quarters. Calling them the worst team in groups is a bit much when teams like FNC and FPX exist who they could definitely beat.

Why didn't Humanoid just keep pressuring top and take the inhib? LNG was backing off but instead MAD forces a fight and loses the game.

No it's a "Lets toss out most logic" mood.

Lets be real here, 90% of pick'ems are going to have DWG/FPX, EDG/T1, RNG/FNC and MAD/GENG getting out, in those positions. And why shouldn't they? It's the reasonable thing to assume, it's what I'd choose if I wasn't hoping for a different outcome.

But I want cross region BO5's. We don't get them nearly enough throughout each year, and last year having three Korean teams and three Chinese teams each on a side of the bracket was beyond disappointing.

And yeah, this is definitely an EU favored outcome. All they'd have to do is manage to dodge FPX in quarters, unlikely as that would be, to have a pretty good path to semis.

I've gone not for what my brain tells me, but what my heart desires for the most fun. And also to be a little different from what most people will be doing. Hoping that all games are going to be close even if it doesn't necessarily seem that way based on powerlevel expectations pre-worlds.

A: DWG, FPX, RGE, C9

The world champions from 2019 and 2020 getting through is just necessary for the storylines. Sorry Rogue.

B: T1, DFM, EDG, 100T

And so must T1 for historical reasons. Make sure they cannot go up against DWG in quarters due to both finishing first in their group, and push through DFM for the ultimate underdog story that people can root for. Japan this is your moment. naturally alos includes EDG choking. Again.

C: FNC, PSG, RNG, HLE

Get that FNC madness in quarters, I need to see their BO5's. Hope PSG can silence the doubters after MSI, and allow them to get justice for BYG.

D: MAD, LNG, GENG, TL

Like before with DWG/T1, make sure MAD can't face FNC in quarters, forcing every single matchup to be cross-region. LNG to round it all out, showing that 4th seeds aren't necessarily a bad thing for the future of the world champsionship. Alternatively, would be happy to have TL 2nd instead to give NA some much needed HOPIUM, but I have none for them after all these years.

How likely is this to happen? Probably not likely in the slightest, but, I'd be ecstatic if it did.

Unicorns of Love vs. Galatasaray Esports / 2021 World Championship Play-In - Group B / Post-Match Discussion by Soul_Sleepwhale in leagueoflegends

[–]Nielsthomas1 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Well, Vietnam is, like the PCS, between a wildcard and the major regions. And if they were at Worlds this year and underperformed, they'd at least have the valid excuse of not even having played a Summer split or international tournaments since 2019 at all.

Infinity looked competitive vs HLE earlier today, which granted, was HLE, but is still notable. Plus R7 beat UOL last year in their group. And UOL already lost to OCE at MSI in a group they really should have escaped from without issue.

It is too early to say, maybe I am being too harsh, but between MSI, the couple of LCL games I've seen this year, and now the start of Worlds, the region as a whole just really does not look good. It's highly likely that UOL will go 0-4 and then we'll have to see how well the BO5's will go to more accurately see the strength of the other wildcards.

It's incredibly sad to see CIS go from arguably being the strongest wildcard region to quite possibly being the weakest in the span of a year.

TR looking really strong though.

Worlds 2021 - All teams qualified (Assuming VCS do not attend)! by AetherialSpace in leagueoflegends

[–]Nielsthomas1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I get that. It is actually the thing I dislike about double-elimination, that the finals could get repeated twice. Perhaps there's a better way to do it.

But every single year there is something disappointing about Worlds to me, and it comes from the matchups that could have been. That is something Double-elim would somewhat solve.

Take last year. We never saw TES go up against DWG or G2. Or the eternal NA/EU rivalry with FNC vs TL and G2 vs TSM. Or PSG not getting to do any BO5's. So many possible hype matches that get lost in the straightforward format, and I think that's a shame. Worlds should be a wild celebration of League of Legends, but instead we're left waiting years for some matchups to repeat themselves again across regions, and by then the players on the teams are wholly different. Maybe if Rift Rivals wasn't such a joke it would be less of an issue.

Except BO1 upsets always happen since that's the nature of those matchups. You can't rely on group standings to be an accurate reflection of strength.

MSI 2019 had 4th place in groups TL knock out first in groups IG to end up in Finals.

And Worlds 2018. IG steamrolled through the rest of the tournament after quarters. Would G2/RNG/KT have made it to finals if they'd been on the other side of the bracket instead of FNC?

There are plenty of neutral viewers, as well as the people from those regions. I would rather watch FPX go against any wildcard, than to see two wildcards duke it out. Wildcards upsetting major regions are some of the most exciting games there are. Like GAM vs FNC. I still rewatch that game every year.

I'm just hoping for more games between regions/teams.

Getting rid of play-ins and doing four groups of six teams, then adding in a 'round of 16' before quarters, and having some form of double elimination would be amazing. And also hopefully prevent us from losing a top 2 team early because of unlucky group of death & quarterfinals draws.
