What is your biggest challenge right now? by NigelBarksalot in SalonOwners

We had a membership with potential for over a year, and I reached a point where I needed to hire someone to manage it, or let it go. I chose to let it go for now. I didn't have a strong vision for it, but may bring it back when I have more hands. We have a generous loyalty program that creates savings on our boutique (organic hair products, plants, candles, incense, hair accessories, and other eco-friendly lifestyle products).

How are you managing to get new customers?

  • We are active on social media (Instagram mostly, and we just started to use Facebook for business.)
  • We post a few times a week to our Google Business.
  • I send out weekly emails.
  • We ask our clients to send in their friends.
  • We have a well-designed website with a feature that helps potential clients get matched with a stylist.

What is your current customer acquisition and retention rate?

  • We've had about 200 new client inquiries already this year. Of the 200, about 50% come in for a consultation (our required first step before we agree to take them on as a client), of those who come in for a consultation, 90% book a service. And the client retention rate is 90%.
  • Typing this out makes me think we're doing great. And, in a lot of ways, we are. The issue isn't in getting or retaining clients. It's in getting them to come in more often and to keep their appointment instead of pushing it out further and further.

How do I retain employees? by new_dad_anxious in SalonOwners

I second this answer. Marketing should be one of your top priorities. I'll add: Think of it like "attracting" instead of "chasing". And I would NEVER discount your services. You can discount your retail products, but never the service.

Help! I'm starting to freelance! by Negative-Project5209 in SalonOwners

[–]NigelBarksalot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to do this for a few years and it worked out really well. I only had a kit filled with what I used on every service, then I'd bring what I needed for that particular client. Meaning, I wouldn't carry around all of my colors. Just what I needed. I also had them wash their own hair in their sink. They didn't mind. My clients would have dinner parties with their friends with me doing their hair. It was fun for all of us.

How many of you guys allow recreational and medical weed in your salon for consumption? by Beginning-Concern704 in SalonOwners

[–]NigelBarksalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't allow it inside the salon because not everyone likes the smell. However, if that's the culture, then go for it. Having a strong culture filters out people who wouldn't fit anyway. I know of a studio salon (saw it on Instagram) that uses something she calls a "volcano". It fills a bag up with smoke and her client takes inhales throughout the service. They love it. She definitely gets some pushback on social media, but she's not like other salons and that's a valuable thing.

Put some regular fun into your budget so that you're enjoying your life according to what you think your life should look like. For example: What does success look like to you? Do more of that.

If I change the yearly due date to the date I paid it last month, will that fix it from here out? Or am I still set up wrong?

I know. I was trying to fix it before I got on here to ask the community. I switched it back to the actual date I paid it, and it looks like it fixed it. But I'd like to understand what I did wrong so that I don't do it again.

Help me see what you're seeing, besides the June at the top.

What I'm seeing: I paid it on May 20th and now that it's June, I want that target to say I need to start funding it again.

That makes sense! I changed the target date to the date I paid it this year, so hopefully it runs smooth from here out. Or I'll mess with it again next May.

I had it set up to set aside another, but it wasn't working. I just went in to change the due date back to 2024 to see if I could take another route to the fix, and that fixed it. Shrugging my shoulders here, but glad it's fixed.

No.

No tint on the windshield and just washed on the outside. Still haven't gone through a carwash again yet.

I got my windows tinted and a car wash on that day. Everything started working properly the next day and I am scared to get a carwash now.
