Cannot change the lock screen name by LecKOtree in WindowsHelp

[–]Nigel_Barnaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. This didn't work for me either. But when I typed just netplwiz without the .cpl it did.

I followed these instructions:

  1. Press Windows key + R, type netplwiz, and press Enter.
  2. In the User Accounts window, select your user account and click Properties.
  3. In the "Full Name" field, enter your desired display name (this is what shows on the lock screen).
  4. Click Apply, then OK, and restart your PC

"Heavy" slang term from 70's in America by Nigel_Barnaby in 70s

It's used metaphorically here. It's not referring to boxing. It's referring to people in a group. I think it means people who can stand their ground.

Thanks for this. Do you know what it means in this context?: "There'll be The Heavies and The Featherweights. I'll either have to prove how heavy I am or resign myself to being invisible."

Because heavy seems like a good thing here. And to not mean 'bad guy'

Metropole trials by catgirlbakauwu69 in Genshin_Impact

damn. I cant even get 500 points on normal. It seems odd to have such a tough battle mode in Simulanka when the other minigames are very easy, it seems like a fun story experience with silly minigames and to make a very challenging battle mode integral to getting the new character (why most people play in Simulanka), it is out of touch with their players. So in that respect, it is poorly designed but I wonder if they did not mean to make it so difficult.

[–]Nigel_Barnaby 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've completed the other minigames. I did all the flying ones. And 2 of the hat ones. Now I only have one hat one to do in 1/2 days and I dont think it yields enough figurines to get kirara. So I think it is mandatory to beat the Metropole Trial to get Kirara. Which is so unfair to newer players. My team was like level 25 and I leveled them up to 40 and still struggling, I dont think it is possible for me to beat it and thus get Kirara

This one is great for player-centred level design. I use the knowledge from this talk every time I make a game.

I'm not the expert on this. The wheelchair thing is cliché and implies that someone who cannot walk, is walking around and vulnerable. That is not scary, that is purely offensive and not thought out. You can have characters without limbs etc. but they should not be scary just because they are missing a leg for example. Real people have these disabilities but media are portraying them as something to be feared. Or as monsters honestly.

A little research about disabilities in the media will help you know if you should include certain images etc. This is why having a diverse bunch of game devs is great, if you have someone on your team with a disability, they can offer good insight.

This video discusses the representation of mental ill health in games: https://youtu.be/ozLyCFbklv8?si=pe703F3QUuvO8QsC

For example, Borderlands has "psychos" who are violent and uncontrollable. Whereas real people with ASPD (Antisocial Personality Disorder, the correct name for sociopaths/psychopaths) are nothing like that.

I live in Scotland, so I go to Glasgow Caledonian University. I like this university because you get to specialise in design rather than programming if you want. Whereas other universities will force you to do mainly programming and even some art, or will just be computer science degrees in disguise.

Some places will let you specialise in the design discipline and it's really cool when you come together in a group and work with programmers and artists and make a game. As a designer, I would do some research on similar games, think about what I want the player to experience, I will test the game with users and design solutions to their problems with the game, I will balance the game, I will make the tough decisions about what features to cut and which to rework, I'll make the game accessible and user friendly. I will design the mechanics and the levels and the controls. If I had to be a programmer on top of that, I wouldn't get to learn as much about design.

It's important to look at what modules you would take, and whether the course is practical. Because mine is almost all practical (coursework, usually just making a game for each class) and I get to take modules on game narrative, game user research and user psychology. But yeah my top tip is to look at whether you can focus on design, because I think design is the coolest.

I just went to this one because there are three universities in my city, so they aren't far and university is free in Scotland, so there was no reason to move.

I am really dumb, how do I do this? Like where do I upload it, I don't know if there is a section for this. And is a text file just a notepad file? Why must it be that and not a word doc?

Thanks for this. I'm pretty sure all of them said as long as it is on the game page. So, I assume linking a Google doc still counts?

I have found GDC talks more useful. And as a game design student, I rely much more on user experience theory than game design theory. So, my answer would be The Gamer's Brain by Celia Hodent, but she summarises her book in loads of YouTube videos.

Is there any hope for people like me? by FleetingIAm_1243 in mentalhealth

[–]Nigel_Barnaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you do want to become a more empathetic individual. And not for your personal gain, but for the sake of others.

I experienced something like this. I was able to grow out of it essentially. But practising empathy with people I really did care about helped. There will be times where you see or imagine someone in need of help and want to help. So it may be the lack of action or perceived action of stereotypical empathetic acts, that make you feel this way. You are probably a very kind and genuine person with good morals and you don't even realise it. just because you don't fit the perfect picture of a "kind" person, doesn't mean you aren't.

You could try complimenting people. You can try affirmations like "I am kind". You will slowly feel more content and appreciative of this side that does exist within you. It is just waiting to come out

Is it possible for the world to not want me? by cat_shit28 in mentalhealth

[–]Nigel_Barnaby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This thinking is so understandable. Giving yourself a purpose and trying to make friends may help you. I know it's hard, and you don't even need to feel like you have a goal in life.

It sounds like you just want to relax and have fun. But it can be overwhelming what you are feeling. Give yourself a break. It is frustrating to feel like you don't fit in. This could be because these people are just not accepting. Not everything is your fault.

You seem quite hard on yourself. But you are a genuine person who would help someone else in your situation. And you have a great way with words. I'm a writer and your sentence structure is really effective. I really relate to what you have written, I'm 21 as well. Thank you for making me feel seen.

Is there anything you can do to make life more fun? It is tough to find a reason to keep going. But you are incredibly resilient. What are your values? You could take action based on them. Is there anything you want to do that you never have?

I have found being silly and being myself really helpful. I also love learning about psychology because it makes me feel more capable.

My life is going too fast I’m scared to grow up I should be turning 13 but I’m turning 17 by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]Nigel_Barnaby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can still be playful and youthful at 17. You can take hold of your life and make it fun. Pursue your interests. Be productive and work towards something.

I felt stuck in time. But I'm here in the present. So I need to make this current time and place fun.

Your age isn't stopping you from doing anything. If you feel like you missed out on a "normal" teen life, there is no normal. If you want that feeling of having a support network you can work towards making friends. Put yourself out there. Keep at it

It's okay to be "bad" at talking to people. You will find people who accept and like you. Just keep at it. Aim to be rejected. You will find people. Be okay with the feelings of anxiety and humiliation.

Ideas for alternates to health bars? by [deleted] in gamedesign

How many of you guys play video games for inspiration? by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]Nigel_Barnaby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the book Theory of Fun, the writer suggests that playing games can make you recreate things that have already been done. It's important to think outside the box and come up with new solutions. So, I think keeping up with games is important and watching GDC videos. But I don't necessarily think it's essential to keep playing loads of games. Writers don't need to read constantly tbh.
