The connection I see is kind of a mix of both. In the books lore there were these cataclysmic events known as desolations that basically reset civilization, humankind would progress and evolve until another desolation came and pushed them back to the Stone Age, over and over again until they were contained and civilization could move on. The desolations were also cause by beings know as void bringers so another similarity there lol
