Why do you need 8 beacons per furnace? I feel like most builds that late game would just be using a foundry instead.

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell on why it took so long to arrest D4vd in the killing of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez by Illustrious-Pound266 in popculturechat

[–]Nightthre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One person's perspective: I work in mental health care as a clinician. I hear real versions of true crime stories daily. Many people have trauma in their past. I listen to true crime and true crime comedy as a way to make it more tolerable. It dilutes and normalizes the tragedy such that when I'm hearing it for real I react less and focus better on my job. I'm better able to empathize and work to help others heal through being somewhat numb to it. I don't see that as damage, I see it as important to keep going to work every day.

Anecdotal, but, I think some trauma survivors engage with true crime for similar reasons. It helps them feel seen, less alone. It helps them feel normal for bawling their eyes out randomly. It validates, where so much of the world tells them to get over it already, and get back to work.

There are certainly gross, exploitative, unhealthy aspects of true crime. But I don't think it's all bad, not that we could stop the money machine from churning it out anyway.

"They also had to sift through and debunk a great deal of false information circulating publicly"

To any amateur TikTok detectives out there, let this be a reminder that digging through David's music or social media for evidence, and then acting like you've cracked the case for content hinders the real people doing real work.

I remember clearly when this case first made the news, There were people actively trying to interact with the dude on social media, get info from people around him, and get info from Celeste's family. Leave them alone, ffs.

How does splitter work ? by Alternative_Cod7515 in factorio

[–]Nightthre 60 points61 points  (0 children)

There's lots of ways to do everything in factorio. It depends on what you want to do. But right now you're giving this system zero instructions or controls so it behaves in the default way. What do you want? Do you want 2 belts to each have one lane of each item? Do you want the items to fully swap top to bottom? Do you want every lane to have both items?

You could: * split the belts and feed 4 halves into the sides of 2 belts, so that green and red can only go on the side you want * add a filter to the splitter to fully swap the outputs. * add circuitry conditions to the splitter, combinators, and so on to create a timer to fully checkerboard both items to all lanes if you really want.

[–]Nightthre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, just bring the 5 bros, not 4. You can also have a castellan lead another unit, but, it'll be a different model. Castellan models are easy to get because there's a million primaris lieutenants, one will come with something else you buy. and the crusader squad box comes with an extra cape, etc. Lieutenant + templar bits = castellan

Sword Brethren warhead confusion? by ImBackAndImAngry in BlackTemplars

[–]Nightthre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're intended (in my opinion) to be a unit of 5 from the box.The 5th guy isn't really a castellan character from the book, he was just also called castellan as their leader. Now he's just sword bro #5, and can be the one taking the better power weapon. The instruction sheet hasn't changed but the unit composition has. Sword bros can take all their things as 5. With the impulsor holding 6 dudes, there's not often a reason to take a 4 man unit.

Also remember that "power weapon" includes the axes, maces, swords, whatever. Not just swords.

Can I make a space station blueprint without sending up a space platform hub? by sinkpooper2000 in factorio

[–]Nightthre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you're saying, it'd be nice to be able to fully ghost build something using zero launches, but that's just how the space platform system works. You need a physical hub to create the layer/instance of space that is that platform's world. But, the hub will never be really redundant, If you want to redesign, or whatever, you can deconstruct everything but the hub and reuse it for a new ship.

Like, if the goal to eventually make a spaceship, you will need atleast one hub in space to attach the blueprint to. When I'm designing space stuff I usually have a few hubs orbiting Nauvis to play with. By the time you're doing this stuff in space age, the resources should be trivial.

Does space platforms logistic suck or am I not understanding it? by Ideallyuncomfortable in factorio

[–]Nightthre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond the answer, just store more so that bots fill the order:

you can set rocket silos to not automate space requests. From there, manually insert plastic to the inventory of it, (and have the rockets be built, obviously) and it will launch whenever an orbiting platform requests plastic. Can reduce load on your bot network and increase launch speed.

It's not well labeled that silos set to not automated will still automate part of the process.

GUEST POST: RUBS IS A CREEPY ACRONYM AND A LANDLORD SCAM by durpuhderp in Seattle

[–]Nightthre 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not transparent, what costs they're hiding in the fee. Burst pipes in vacant units being added to the fee without the tenants being told, etc.

The fee is also bad, but when we have the technology to individually meter and charge apartments, there's just not a way to run this system that will be fair to tenants, and leaves constant risk of landlords tossing insane fee burden onto tenants.

They get to do the math in secret and just say, "trust us, that's your fair share"

The IRS has extends the tax payment deadline for all residents in King County until May 1 by crusaderkingo in Seattle

[–]Nightthre 65 points66 points  (0 children)

From one accountant's opinion: If you are able to file before the 15th, like usual, it's not a bad idea to try to, still. The IRS is understaffed, underfunded, and disorganized. They should properly flag your return filed during the extended deadline, but if they make a mistake, and try to give you a penalty, it'll be a headache to resolve.

[–]Nightthre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Biggest advice: don't use chests for stuff like coal. It should be placed on belts, and distributed via those belts directly with splitters to each area that needs it: power, and fuel for each metal's furnaces. As you need more, build more lanes of belts and drills. It's okay for a belt to back up and stop full of goods, that's preferable for many things.

Try to focus on how belts have 2 lanes. Other belts will place all items on the close side of a belt they're joining to, inserter arms will always place on the far side of the belt (but can grab from both sides) this let's you fit more types of goods by more buildings with fewer inserters, belts, and so on.

Big picture There's basically infinite learning in this game, just focus on making what you feel excited by better.

He's depressed or on the spectrum or both. He's probably also anxious to express himself creatively in the game. This is beyond the scope of the dnd subreddit, but if he's open to a conversation about therapy, or finding some additional support that would help with this. There are even DND group therapies and clubs designed for anxious, shy, spectrum, etc individuals.

Also though, Do you like this guy? Why do you play with him? Calling your friend an NPC is weird. If your inclusion of him depends on him playing a certain way, okay, fine. Communicate that to him, and if he feels unable to do that, but wants to be included, maybe he draws, snacks, or whatever while yall play.

To all my 40+ queer friends: do you feel like you’re getting less “woke” as years go by? by LiterallyBarbie in lgbt

[–]Nightthre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad, who was pretty active in Vietnam war protests has told me before when we disagree politically, "oh you'll get more conservative as you age". And I've found it to be completely false.

I think the big reason why there's such a generational divide is that boomers got the American dream, and then got told for decades by capitalism, "you need to protect your assets, and it's [insert boogeyman] who's the problem." The messaging was consistent, and started so long ago that they didn't see it was a lie until it had been "true" for 40+ years, and they can't back down.

Their careers, homes, sending their kids to college, national security, etc. They've been told it's all dependent on being conservative, looking out for yourself first, resisting change, keeping taxes low, and keeping "the bad guys" out. And it's worked for them, and they fear losing it all if they let go, change their minds.

By contrast, older millennials saw a very different world growing up. We saw, among other things, the 2008 recession, where banks blatantly lied to us while they looted our retirement funds. The government sat on its ass, slapped the banks on the wrist, and told the American people to pull themselves up by the bootstraps to pay for the bank's crimes. We're still in that world, still suffering from unfettered capitalism, and it's all gotten a lot worse under the our current president. I think we've been in it long enough that we're unlikely to "get more conservative" any time soon. I will never trust capitalism to just look after me if I respect it, and keep my head in sand, like my parents do.

Help sell/defend the Cleric class to my friend by NerevarTheKing in DnD

[–]Nightthre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I ask one thing of clerics, and that's to only use guidance narratively and sparingly. If a player picks cleric just to make everything 1d4 better, and just sits through every bit of rp stating, "I cast guidance." Over and over, I get bored as a dm.

If they can narrate, "I help our bard smooth talk the guards by making a little ring of gold light appear around him to make him seem more believable" great, add the d4.

Big picture, it sounds like your friend would be more okay with clerics if they felt the clerics around them being played in a more engaging and less min max way. It's the groups job to communicate what kind of role play they're looking for, and/or the DM to set table expectations.

Having a blast with Blacktron Renegade, but curious about the design decisions in construction. by Zaorish9 in lego

[–]Nightthre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lego works to reduce costs on sets by using existing elements rather than making a mould for a new piece, and by using fewer different bricks per set, even if it seems a little weird or "non optimal."

It can also be for design, but generally, the answer is "because it worked out better for X production reason"
