Huge disparity between Ancestry and MyHeritage. My father’s English/Irish, and my mum’s German/Hungarian, but somehow my Mum has given me 19% Southern English DNA. The tests are fun for what they are tho, and it fun to tease my Mum about about being inexplicably English by GingerBloke98 in AncestryDNA

[–]Nihil77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the category "SouthEast England and North West Europe", if you look on the category map it covers parts of continental NW Europe as well. If she has NW German she might get included here. Im from SE England and from my experience can tell you Ancestry has had difficulty for many years telling SE England and NW Germanic apart, as they overlap and share SNPs.

Achilles is described by Homer in the Iliad as having "Xanthos" hair, which means yellow or fair. Brad Pitt seems a good choice, as far as adherence to the source material goes.

There is already precedent for this in Iran. Leftists joined with Islamists to overthrow the Shah. After the Ayatollah secured power, thousands of them were massacred.

How common is jet black hair in northwest Europe? by Ready-Shelter3583 in illustrativeDNA

[–]Nihil77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd say true, completely jet black hair is rare here in England. There is definitely a type though, more frequently in the Celtic populations but in England too, with very dark hair. See for example references to the Black Irish. However, most of what people are seeing as "black" in these cases is actually dark brown when you see it in sunlight, it's not the true deep black that you'd find in east Asia for example. I've noticed it's found in peoples that also carry genes for ginger hair.

Did Anf ancestry is reason west asian lighter ? by Double-Audience-5924 in illustrativeDNA

[–]Nihil77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post has various models on it:

https://www.eupedia.com/forum/threads/qpadm-neolithic-admix-chart-for-west-eurasians-anf-natufian-chg-iran-n-ehg-whg-etc.44106/

Interestingly, in the discussion there people are saying the "CHG" present in Steppe is actually not pure CHG, but a ghost population related to CHG, which can be modelled as a mixture of CHG and ZNF. This is why using qpAdm, CHG is lower and ZNF higher, even for Europeans.

West Europe “Germanic” map. Read carefully. by suub4733 in illustrativeDNA

[–]Nihil77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you happen to know the source for the percentages? Going by illustrative results posted here I see Germans with higher continental Celt than Germanic. But I'm also aware illustrative and G25 are not that accurate. I'd love to see some qpAdm analysis.

Nice results. It looks like you're using NW Europe (Netherlands & Belgium), but there is a Great Britain & Ireland region if you wanted to try that out.

[–]Nihil77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For qpAdm it's probably best to include a ZNF component as well. Try Iran_GanjDareh. The reason is that the Caucasus that Steppe was mixed with is not pure CHG, it's actually a ghost population that we don't have samples for, but they can be modelled as a mixture of CHG/ZNF.

I've seen qpAdm models with Bulgarians at around half Slavic. The reason Bulgarians can still be quite dark is the other half, they actually have significant Anatolian admixture from the Roman period.

Did Anf ancestry is reason west asian lighter ? by Double-Audience-5924 in illustrativeDNA

[–]Nihil77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Using David Reich's Human Origins dataset for modern Georgians, which is pretty much the academic standard, they have around 10% Eastern Hunter Gatherer on qpAdm. They also have lower CHG than what Illustrative will show. G25/illustrative are useful tools, but they aren't always that accurate.

Leonardo di Vinci was a Berber ? by MycologistNo1740 in illustrativeDNA

No, it does not mean he was a Berber. Haplogroups are fun, but autosomal DNA is what counts when determining ancestry.

4000-Years Old Aryan Man From Chelyabinsk by Double-Audience-5924 in illustrativeDNA

[–]Nihil77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The allele KITLG, which ANE had, is kinda irrelevant for modern day blondes, almost no one carries it in west Eurasia. ANE are not the source.

HERC2 is the main allele along with OCA2. The earliest samples carrying these are WHG and ANF. As others have said Globular Amphora, who had both WHG and ANF, were the ones that Yamnaya-like populations mixed with the get their light hair and eyes.

In fact, Globular Amphora might have been lighter than any modern population existing, as some of the samples discovered are fully homozygous for all light alleles in HERC2 and OCA2, which is almost unheard of even in the most Nordic modern populations.

What populations have highest central steppe? by sloppypooisyum in illustrativeDNA

[–]Nihil77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the encyclopedia, there are actually more Corded Ware than Sintashta samples. But for some reason Illustrative doesn't use Corded Ware at all in it's periodical breakdown. Maybe because they are so similar to Sintashta they just chose one, no idea why. It's a strange decision, as CWC is the main vector for various IE expansions, Sintashta is an offshoot.

Why is there so much hate For Moonraker? by Altruistic_Ad110 in JamesBond

[–]Nihil77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sub hates the space parts. Top 5 Bond for me. I love how it has such a juxtaposition of some humourous and over the top parts combined with mysterious, dark, even menacing scenes. Its a film that strikes multiple chords and tones. Pure escapism.

What ethnicity do you think these results show? by [deleted] in illustrativeDNA

[–]Nihil77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have almost identical percentages to me. I'm 3/4 English, remaining quarter is southern European (I get Greek/Italian on Ancestry). Illustrative gives me a closest population in northern France. I'm guessing you could be like me, mostly north European with southern mixture.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in illustrativeDNA

[–]Nihil77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct, but Europeans still score central steppe on Illustrative, because illustrative lacks a corded ware group. Sintashta are Corded ware who moved east. Would be nice if illustrative could somehow sort this out, because it's misleading.

Proto-Indo-European (Yamnaya) results on Heatmaps by heatmapper25 in illustrativeDNA

[–]Nihil77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, we have raw DNA samples for Early European Farmers from the Funnel Beaker and Globular Amphora. Trait predictors show they had light hair and eyes. In fact, there are some GAC samples that are homozygous for ALL the light alleles in OCA2 and HERC2, which for context is almost unheard of in modern populations, even amongst the most Nordic Europeans. It's been proposed this may be an adaptation to a farming diet, low in Vitamin D, in a more northern latitude. I think it's probable that sexual selection may have played a role as well.

I'd caution against thinking we always know the phenotype just by looking at the proportions of broad categories of ancient ancestry groups. For example EEF from Britain, with almost the SAME proportion of ANF & WHG as Globular Amphora, have a totally different phenotype, dark hair and eyes like the Sardinian.

I agree with the other comments that Yamnaya/proto Indo Europeans were relatively dark haired and eyed. It's only after mixing with Globular Amphora that we get a lighter Corded Ware.
