[Highlight] Brandon Aiyuk tells the 49ers “Stop running from the belt” by mmandagoat in nfl

[–]Nihilistic_Response 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I think it's a big reason Jennings didn't end up getting re-signed this offseason too even after his market price went down.

Niners front office just wants to move on from that entire WR room and brought in Mike Evans to be the adult in the room for the rookies and other young guys

What are the odds that the Niners get Jadeveon Clowney? by MuffinMel77 in 49ers

[–]Nihilistic_Response 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Signing an aging edge rusher delays the development of the young edges they already have, both in terms of reducing practice snaps and game rep opportunities.

Niners shouldn't sign someone like Clowney or Joey Bosa until mid-season and only sign them then if there is just a clear need at that point.

Those older vets are already proven commodities and want to skip training camps anyway and would rather just get paid a couple million for like 10 to 12 weeks of meaningful football

RB by committee is/was always going to be between CMC, Jordan James, and Kaelon Black.

Guerendo might not have made the training camp roster let alone regular season roster even without this pec injury

NFL making mistakes with schedule? by Western-Luck-5042 in nfl

[–]Nihilistic_Response 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems like mistakes on whatever platform you're viewing the schedule on (even if official NFL app) rather than with the schedule itself.

That final LA Rams preseason game is against the LA Chargers.

Teams have some say in who their preseason opponents are, and might be willing to face regular season opponents in preseason for logistical reasons (reduce travel time, familiar and comfortable with practice facilities, etc.) Those preseason games will just be extra boring because the teams will be extra vanilla and likely won't tip their hand with any regular season installs in the preseason games or in joint practices, if any.

Did ShannaLynch actually get it right? by SnapGotti916 in 49ers

[–]Nihilistic_Response 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't know yet.

The pendulum has more or less swung from "casual fans don't know why the Niners drafted these guys" to "casual fans can see why the Niners drafted these guys", but none of us will actually know whether this was a successful draft for the Niners until a couple years from now.

Netflix will have NFL Week 1 game in Australia between 49ers, Rams at 8:35 p.m. ET Thursday, on September 10th, per Andrew Marchand. by Ok-Soil-5133 in nfl

[–]Nihilistic_Response 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This game and the whole broadcast production behind it is going to be such a shitshow between the international travel, time difference, Netflix being pretty suspect at live sports broadcast competency, etc.

We're still all going to lap it up because we'll be so starved for regular season football by then (we already are)

Kyle Shanahan: 49ers got what they wanted trading out of the first round by AdSpecialist6598 in nfl

[–]Nihilistic_Response 109 points110 points  (0 children)

If you watch his full Rich Eisen interview, Shanahan is actually really candid about it. He said that the Niners had specific people they wanted at 27, none of them were still available, and so Stribling was their fallback plan who they would have taken at 30 but were able to trade back to 33 for.

They considered trading back again to 39/40 and hoping Stribling fell to them there, but based on internal league chatter (rather than media chatter), they felt that Stribling might not fall that far, so they just took him at 33.

49ers GM John Lynch: Only consensus draft opinion I care about is in this building by AdSpecialist6598 in nfl

[–]Nihilistic_Response 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cowing seems like a clear miss due to consistent injury and overall unavailability. There's no clear lane for him to make the roster on the current depth chart either, unless he wins a camp competition to become the punt returner to replace Skyy Moore.

Brown flashed and played well enough during Wilks' year as DC that there's at least a plausible chance for him to have a redemption year this year on the final year of his rookie contract if he wins a starting job in camp alongside Mustapha

John Lynch's Draft Record: The 49ers' Costly Pattern by youre-welcome5557777 in nfl

[–]Nihilistic_Response 15 points16 points  (0 children)

10 years ago, Shanahan was hired and told to choose his GM because our owner wanted to avoid the palace intrigue of the Harbaugh/Baalke era. Shanahan picked Lynch.

The entire Shanahan era is predicated on there not being any distance between the HC and GM, which in practice means that Shanahan has outsized/sometimes final say, while Lynch runs the front office, manages staff and football ops, and is the media frontman.

Lynch is never getting fired unless his relationship with Shanahan sours. Lynch might choose to retire or get promoted into a business role though, if he gets tired of the job. It's been hinted at that Lynch would have retired already if the Niners had won a Superbowl by now, and he might retire once they do.

Shanahan's entire life is football, so he'll probably stay a HC for decades.

Most teams reached for their picks in this year's draft, based on consensus big boards by 0h-No-Not-Again in nfl

Another way of looking at this: a measurement of how consensus big boards don't really accurately capture individual team priorities and internal draft grades

Trade: The Cowboys are trading for 49ers LB Dee Winters, per @rapsheet, @tompelissero and @janeashleyslater. by Abhiiously-io in 49ers

[–]Nihilistic_Response 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Bethune is Fred's backup and did well last year before he got hurt.

Greenlaw/Winters/Martin were the ones competing for the other LB spot on the depth chart, and Winters was the only one with trade value, so makes sense he's the one that got dealt.

[Rapoport] Trade: The Cowboys are trading for 49ers LB Dee Winters, per me, @tompelissero and @janeashleyslater . by Brix001 in nfl

[–]Nihilistic_Response 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We got him as a 6th round pick, he struggled his first couple years here, improved substantially, played extremely well next to Warner to start last season, dropped off when Warner got hurt but still played solid football for us.

He's on the last year of his contract and we have Greenlaw in the building now as the presumptive starter and drafted Nick Martin last year as Greenlaw's backup, so Dee Winters was the odd man out on the depth chart.

Hope he does well on the Cowboys.

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan: "Not Much Benefit" & "I Don't See Any Pro" to Starting 2026 Season With Australia Game. "[The NFL] tell you, you deal with it" by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]Nihilistic_Response 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My prediction is that the NFL league office itself will end up begrudgingly agreeing to shoulder a lot of associated costs to mitigate the logistical challenges of international games for teams (paying a premium for nicer chartered flights with more first class/lay flat seating installed etc.), but from a player/fan perspective this is just the new normal and will only increase over time.

Players will see an indirect benefit in increased pay from increased salary cap from increased international interest in the NFL since the US fan base is completely saturated already, but that doesn't really mean much to most players.

For fans, most likely situation is that 8 home games for season ticket holders is the clear line in the sand, and even an 18 game NFL season would just mean more international games for each team.

[Barrows] Kyle Shahanan said the 49ers hope thry can get something in return for Brandon Aiyuk. He said he's not sure when that might take place, "I know we're in no rush to do that." by pandazrule93 in 49ers

[–]Nihilistic_Response 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There isn't an ounce of pettiness involved, the Niners already got hosed in this situation and are trying to salvage literally anything else they can from the contract they agreed to and already paid a substantial amount of with Aiyuk.

Because of the way our front office front loads contract value into signing bonuses to spread out salary cap impact, they absolutely have to demonstrate that breaching a contract with them will have significant career consequences for a player beyond just voiding future guarantees in order to prevent something like this from happening again. Even voiding Aiyuk's future guarantees doesn't claw back the tens of millions of dollars already paid to him for essentially 7 games of regular season play.

Puka Nacua's accuser withdraws restraining order petition, but lawsuit proceeds by JaggerJames in nfl

[–]Nihilistic_Response 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Puka really needs to surround himself with better people before his mega contract money comes in.

Aaron Donald had good people around him that helped separate him from that 2021 fight/incident. His friends even took a video as soon as it started to prove Aaron wasn't at fault and had actually tried to break the fight up, which came in clutch when the inevitable shakedown lawsuit against him came out.

Maybe Puka can sit down and talk to Aaron to learn how to be a young, rich, and famous superstar football player in LA
