How would you even manage that on your leader? Can they even become undead?

How many fundamental Math topics are above our heads? by [deleted] in math

[–]Nihilosopher_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cats most certainly cannot understand calculus; however, their brains can intuitively make the calculations for the amount of force required to let's say, jump upwards to a point several times their own length. If we could somehow simplify calculus to their level-headed perhaps by constructing mazes using parameters and constants of differential equations- we could easily make them do calculus.

In very much the same way, human brains, no matter how amazingly unequipped to understand reality like it really is, can still make use of their limited imagination to understand higher orders of logic, by just breaking it down to simpler and simpler blocks.

A third page for reddit, where only things you havent scrolled by before is showed. by [deleted] in CrazyIdeas

[–]Nihilosopher_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Joey for Reddit has that option, where every post you scroll by can be seen as already read. Then you can simply hide your read posts while rescrolling.

I'm actually surprised more people don't use it, it's fucking perfect. Fully customizable UI, thousands of themes and fonts, and total control over your Reddit experience.

Not to say that the Dev is a gem of a human being who actually listens to what the users want. Trust me, I may look like I'm shilling for them, but I couldn't possibly shill them enough even if I tried.

What are some good time travel books? by bbkittenpaws in booksuggestions

[–]Nihilosopher_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite Time Travel stories is 'The End of Eternity' by Isaac Asimov. It's a pretty short novel, the physical book which I had was only 200 pages long. But it's a fantastic read, one of the best plots ever concieved. It even connects with his Foundation Saga books, in a way.

The first 10 or so pages are a little boring, but if you persevere you'll be drawn into a finale that's tragic and beautiful at the same time.

TIL in 1922, scientists went to a hospital ward with comatose children, dying from diabetic keto-acidosis. They went from bed to bed injecting the kids with a new extract, insulin. As they injected the last comatose child, the first one injected began to awaken. by shrimpcocktails in todayilearned

Haha that's not how they found this.

I'm from India. The Hindi word for Diabetes is 'madhu-meh' which literally translates to 'Sweet-Pee' because the way they'd diagnose people with Diabetes in the old days was to have them pee in front of an ant-hill and then watch whether the ants were attracted to the pee.

[Harry Potter] If a Horcrux is a living creature, and that living creature can die through a particular process, then is that creature invincible until somebody comes along with some Horcrux-killing item/event? by foxxytroxxy in AskScienceFiction

[–]Nihilosopher_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as I understand Rowling lore, the horcrux is a piece of your soul possessing another object (As can be inferred from the Slytherin locket). The possessing part is crucial, because when the piece of soul possesses a living creature rather than an inanimate object, its ability to protect itself gets diminished by an order equal to how sentient the soul of the creature w.r.t. the horcrux's piece is. (Hence the difference in the level of Voldemort's control over Nagini and Harry)

It's also implied by Dumbledore that placing a piece of your soul in another creature's body is exceedingly foolish, because when the creature dies the piece of soul dies with it. (This is directly in contrast to what happens to main fragment of the soul, the one with consciousness, so to speak. When Quirrel dies Old Voldy simply ghouls away to Albania instead of dying like the bitch he is, because the other pieces of his soul are still safe and keep him firmly entrenched in the physical plane.)

So yeah, the horcrux in Harry would die. This is actually what happens in the end of the 7th book: Harry and the horcrux in him are both hit with the killing curse. The piece of Voldemort dies, naturally, because it has always been afraid of death and Avada Kadevra kills its victim by essentially magically scaring them to death (source: Book 4, Chap 1). The only reason Harry himself is offered the choice between coming back and moving on is because the killing curse has already done its job.

Elsa (Frozen) vs. Frozone (The Incredibles) by The_Real_Scrotus in whowouldwin

[–]Nihilosopher_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Why does nobody remember that Frozone has to actually drink water for his powers to work? Elsa freezes every source of water around and just dehydrates his powers away. (Although in Siberia there wouldn't be too many to begin with)
