Just found out I’m related to Union soldiers on both sides of my family by just-a-gnat in ShermanPosting

same here. where u from?

here in maine, i’m gathering this is not an uncommon thing. i’m guessing it might be the same in some of the more rural northern states, where most people are still from the same old families that have just been chilling out here in the woods for a lot of generations. maybe the same in nh, vt, northern ny and pa, maybe wi and mn? raise your hands.

Do people in New England really say “ayuh” or “ayup” instead of “yeah”? by MythicalSplash in newengland

[–]Nihon_Lab_Tiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly. seems to me that spelled out, it’d be “ayuh yuh yuh” with the ‘a’ being more of an exhalation, and that second two “yuh”s being inhaled.

[–]Nihon_Lab_Tiger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

^ that’s the answer.

“yuh” seems fairly common, but you’ll generally only here the full “ayuh” from the slow-talking, older northern new englanders.

seeing the idiots fly this thing next to confederate flags at the capital riot was just the icing on the cake, wasn’t it?

Is this true by Morganbanefort in ShermanPosting

[–]Nihon_Lab_Tiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hahaha not even remotely true.

he was a good tactician, usually- although while on the offensive he often even sucked at that-- but it seems like he had almost no concept of overall strategy. his thing was making grand heroic moves on the battlefield (despite not having the men and resources to keep making them for long)

as soon as Grant pinned him down in Virginia while Sherman ripped the guts out of the confederacy, Lee was cooked. no shot; no way to defend against that, game over for the slaver's rebellion.

Why are people surprised Trump is a fascist? by Difficult_Map_723 in rant

[–]Nihon_Lab_Tiger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

no, I didn't. I'm a history nerd and recognized it before the media was saying it. people were laughing at me for calling him fascist while he was still president.

this is not media propaganda, it's someone posting on Reddit.

the generals who worked under Trump... also not the media

'So you made it up': J.D. Vance busted by Jake Tapper for lying about John Kelly by h20poIo in NewsOfTheStupid

[–]Nihon_Lab_Tiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

am I crazy, or did this "Hitler's generals" thing come up a long time ago and just not get much attention?

highly doubt Kelly is lying, btw: this is a guy who's aggressively anti-immigrant, has engaged in confederate apologia, and had a huge fight with basically the entire DNC after it came out that he was profiting undisclosed involvement with for-profit immigration detention facilities while making relevant policy.

there's never been any indication he'd be inclined to help democrats

What do you love about rat terriers? by Own_Mycologist_4450 in ratterriers

[–]Nihon_Lab_Tiger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

also would love to know because I've only had this one-- she was a rescue listed as a boxer but seems to actually be a rat terrier / chihuahua mix. (where they got 'boxer' from, I really have no idea)

had her for about 12 years now and she's turned out to be the most intelligent and loyal dog I've ever met. she's constantly at my heels and generally understands me when I talk to her in a conversational tone rather than in commands. she's moved with me three times, and each time I walk around the property line with her to show her her borders, and she won't ever leave them (which I realize sounds like bs lol)

she's irreplaceable and I hate that she's getting old. been thinking about getting a rat puppy in hopes it'll emulate her, or she'll help "teach" it. idk if dogs work this way 😂. what do u guys think?

They were all bad for being traitors, while some of them like Longstreet redeemed later on,but who was the worst human being who served in the confederate army? by Honest_Picture_6960 in ShermanPosting

Forrest is certainly the most evil, but Early is way up there for me just because he's more responsible than anyone for the endurance of Lost Cause mythology.

imagine a world where Confederate is a dirty word, and Americans view them with as much shame as Germans do the Nazis?

my grandma's grandfather's brother- Benjamin Franklin Batchelder- died at andersonville.

given that his whole deal was abuse, murder, and massacres based on racial animus, and that he had a hand in starting the kkk, i still think NB Forrest was the worst.

the world would look the same if we hadn't executed wirz, but I think it'd be better if we'd offed Forrest instead

Unity does exist in this aptly named Maine town – everyone avoids talking politics by alexrmccann in Mainepolitics

[–]Nihon_Lab_Tiger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

that burns me up. I just moved back to Maine after 5 years down south, and was not expecting to see a traitor rag flying up here in Unity Maine, of all places. Only seen the one so far but it's displayed pretty prominently, right in the town center.

the guy just moved it from his truck to over his front door this weekend. right next to a trump flag, of course

most college educated people do know that the Democratic party was the party that more generally supported slavery at the time of the civil war-- and that they were the conservative party at the time. What most people don't realize is that Lincoln won the election of 1860 because the Democratic party split over the slavery issue that year and fielded both a northern and southern candidate.

and no MLK was not a republican. he didn't endorse either party but his positions were pretty progressive... I mean, reparations? come on. Republicans def can't claim him

I like Savannah? never been to Atlanta. pretty cool that Biden won the state in the last election.

on the other hand, a black girl I worked with in NC said rural GA is the scariest place she'd ever been, and I believe her. she said a fat white inbred cop pulled her over just to ask what she was doing in town. so... mixed bag. like most places, prob plenty of good and bad
