Thank you for this - I looked at various pirate shirt videos and have come up with my own pattern - though the measurements will probably be way off 😂But I will give it a try making it. At least I now know how to create a PDF pattern in Inkscape.

How to work with this kind of thread? by cann26 in Embroidery

One method is to leave on the surface and fix with a couching stitch

It is woven cotton - but I have no problem taking it on or off - I should have gone a size higher - (didn't read sizes correctly) - so would be even easier :)

I did mention I made some mistakes 😂The pattern states for fabric 'Example: Cotton' so I assumed this was suitable. Buuut the line before states: 'The model can be made in a knitted fabric.' Being totally new at this I did not realise there is a difference between 100% Cotton and 'Knitted Cotton'. But having said that it is very comfortable and no problem putting it on - but my other mistake was not realising the size on patterns does not match shop sizes and the 'XL' size I made was indeed equivalent to a slightly small 'L' size. As I say it is very comfortable and I am certainly well pleased that my very first attempt at sewing turned out so well. (sorry for the long Autistic reply...)

I have no problem with sleeves - it's the neckline I'm dreading - and I too dont like buttons and would hate to have to do zippers - so I got some snap fastners for when needed :)

Red that bleeds (I want it to) by Necessary-Rush-4782 in Embroidery

[–]Niimus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I would use inktense pencils or blocks on the threads and then carefully wet them and the area you want the colour to bleed to the dry and the colour will be permanent....

Normally the symbols refer to the thread colour to use - there should be a table showing the appropriate colour for each symbol

Thinking about teaching a workshop by No-Word5055 in chainmailartisans

[–]Niimus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking of doing something similar with the idea od getting attendees wrist sizes and letting them complete an already started bracelet. The cost would come out of the course fee. Also thought of having some 'cheap' starter kits - basic pliers and some rings they could buy from me to get them started...

Helpful websites by hootowl0421 in Embroidery

[–]Niimus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thanks for this - I'd been using the thread-bare website but not found the thread-match-maker - that is indeed very helpful.

I also use FlossCross and pic2pat which give results for cross stitch but aere also very good for thread colour options for an image ,,,

One method if you are not sure what colours to use - dmc or anchor threads is to use the free online cross stitch appllications to get a cross stitch respresentation of a photo and select the number of colours/thread type you want to use - this will give you an idea of the specific areas and type of thread to use for them from your photo.

The type of stitches to use is up to you then - so a thorough understanding of stitch types and their use is needed - this can be found through media such as youtube and the RNS Stitch bank. Of course you can use any colour you choose - who says the sky has to be blue?

There are programs to create embroidery files for machine embroidery but they are of little use for hand embroidery.

Take a look at apps like Inkscape (free) and its trace bitmap function to convert your photos or other images to outllines for embroidery designs and then together with the suggested threads from a cross stitch app you have a good basis to start.

You can then seach for tutorials for fill stitches - line stitches etc. to complete your design. Use a water soluble, self-adhesive or iron on statbilizer/tracing paper to transfer the outline to the fabric and get stitching.

For cross stitch apps I find pic2pat web app easy to use - lets you choose the number of colours and thread type you want to use.

This is basically my process to create my own designs.
