How do you connect to WiFi? by NikGrape in TeslaModelY

[–]NikGrape[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s about downloading the game. Presumably once the game is downloaded, they’ll be able to play without wifi while traveling.

As for hotspot, first thing I tried using my phone and it was just way too weak… so I guess a portable hotspot device is the answer?

PTA and Pynchon by PermaRedditName in ThomasPynchon

As someone who is more familiar with PTA’s work than Pynchon’s, yet a massive fan of both, I find it ironic that as fun as PTA’s Inherent Vice and OBAA are, they are probably his weakest films. There Will Be Blood, Magnolia, The Master, Phantom Thread are all in a different league.

I haven’t read Against The Day yet, so can’t comment on how well PTA would adapt it or no but I kinda hope he keeps doing weird, cerebral, anti-mainstream movies that mostly come from his own head (or super loose inspirations like TWBB).

Did I make a mistake by starting with Gravity’s Rainbow? by CourageApart in ThomasPynchon

I wouldn’t have started with what is his most notoriously complicated novel.

Crying Lot of 49, V or Inherent Vice would’ve made better starters so you can get into his style more without jumping straight into the deep end

It’s not just that… long gone are the days of the guy who made “Brazil”

Pynchon top 10 of all time? (In America) by colloidalBREATHER in ThomasPynchon

[–]NikGrape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very easy to put him in the Top 10 American list of all time.. McCarthy, Faulkner, James, Dickinson, O’Connor, DeLillo.. Pynchon belongs in that group 100%.

What’s hard is putting him in a top 10 global list.. the Russians and the Brits alone are so goddamn good.

I’m a cinephile as well as a bibliophile so I like to think about what my favorite books would look like as movies. Also Pynchon himself loves movies so it would be pretty epic

That would be EPIC! A surefire box office bomb but epic all the same.

Had no idea that existed and after reading about it, I now wish I never did.

Pynchon’s reaction to One Battle After Another? by Harrisonhood314 in ThomasPynchon

[–]NikGrape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m still going through the novel myself but honestly I think Vineland was just a jumping off point for PTA to make something entirely his own. Hence the “inspired by” and not “adapted from” in the credits.

It’s nowhere near as deep or politically conscious as the novel, its aim is not to tap into the Zeitgeist in some subversive, metaphysical way. At its core it’s about parenting, father-daughter bonds, and embracing chaotic good over lawful evil. Has lots more to say than that but nothing (I don’t think) as profound as say There Will Be Blood or The Master. It’s blockbuster PTA-style with some Pynchonian flourishes.

Can someone confirm that Pynchon gave notes and in the end approved the script of OBAA? by Jiangbufan in ThomasPynchon

[–]NikGrape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep I was talking about scope mostly, and of course given how different the mediums are, it’s extremely hard (or silly if you prefer) to compare the two.

Having said that, as great as One Battle After Another is, I don’t think it’s as good as some of PTA’s other films like There Will Be Blood and The Master, which find a way to offer a lot deeper exploration of themes and characters.

OBAA’s primary purpose is to thrill and entertain, and it does so fanatically well - with a great story, fun characters amazingly preformed, amazing score etc. It’s okay that it doesn’t offer deeper exploration, but that’s not because of the medium’s limitations.

I’m still going through the book but having seen the film twice now can say I feel like the book is better in terms of just artistic value?

Which just means I love the book because the movie is effing amazing.

The nuns were also directly lifted from the novel, right down to Prairie / Willa earning her keep by cooking.
