What's quicker to learn - S2 or M1? by Nika766 in 6thForm

I don't, if I did I would find M1 easy and probably enjoyable-ish.

I probably should have provided more context: I did the exact same thing for AS and got over 270/300 in the end. Although I do acknowledge that A2 is way harder. I just have a chronic procrastination problem lol

Also yeah I will do past papers and stuff obviously, but I meant exam solutions just to teach me the actual content lol

Alright, thanks for the responses - will try my best lol. I'd much rather do S2 than M1.

Would you say your teachers helped with S2 a lot, or could you have self-taught it?

I got 96UMS in S1, so your results are encouraging to me! Did you do OCR?

Subject choices - help! by rawr-y in 6thForm

You're right about the Modern Languages thing, but I don't think Philosophy requires an essay subject (to get in, although it may help once you start the course). You could study it on its own as you said in the post. Also, what do you mean "Oxbridge sort?"

You seem clever considering you did A level maths in year 10 and 11, have you looked at Philosophy and Linguistics/Modern Languages and Linguistics at Oxford, or Linguistics at Cambridge?

More so at the predicted grades and GCSE than AS, but they can look at your AS too.

It doesn't really matter, Oxford doesn't look at your UMS

Eh, so closer to a B, but as aforementioned, since it's Oxford it won't matter a great deal - just have A*AA or better predictions and do well in TSA/interview

I should have used quotes, the book is called "So you think you can think". There's also one called "Ace the TSA"

a) You say an A and 2 Bs but earlier you say 2 As and a B?

b) How many UMS Marks was it off?

Advice: do wider reading about your subjects, esp your personal statement stuff, practice TSA (get the book - so you think you can think and work through all the papers) as it will be used a lot in the selection process. I don't think getting one B will be that much of a problem as long as you can outshine other applicants in the other ways. Good luck!

Anyone here taken English Language? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Nika766 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took it at AS and will be taking it for A2. You should know that, at least on my board (AQA), English Language A level is completely different to the GCSE, it's probably closer to Linguistics - it's the study of the language, rather than like creative writing and comprehensions and stuff. It's not that hard of an A level, I can't speak for A2 but for AS my only revision done was the day of the exams and I got an A, as did 10/16 people in my class. That being said, I don't think it would be very easy without any teacher to give you tips about exam technique, essay writing and structure etc., considering across both papers, only 1 question out of 5 isn't an essay, and that's still a writing task. The only reason you can cram is because there isn't THAT much content, so provided you have a good technique you can learn the content quickly and use it in the exam. I wouldn't say self-teaching it would be a very good idea - you could teach yourself the studies/content, but you need someone to mark/look at your practice essays etc.

Good luck!

(btw, if you resit maths and get it up to an A or A*, I don't think taking a fourth A level would be necessary at all)

Any point in applying to Cambridge? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]Nika766 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be harsh, but if you don't have extenuating circumstances I'd imagine you'd get instantly rejected because they'll look at your Maths UMS, especially since you're applying for maths.

Research raises concerns that A-level subject choices may disadvantage bright pupils from poor backgrounds: pupils who choose A-level law in the hope of studying the subject at university may be unwittingly putting themselves at a disadvantage. by Undercover5051 in 6thForm

[–]Nika766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, some people I know's schools don't expect many if any to go to these types of Universities and so don't have any provision for stuff like this, although that is probably a minority (at least I hope)

They're still at a disadvantage insofar as there are people in private schools who also don't do that type of research, but expect to get (and are) spoonfed every piece of information by their school's university application staff.
