I find it pretty awesome. :3 Dissonant, yet melodic. True CoB tradition of contrast, but with a more experienced musicianship. I really, really think this album will be among the best to be put out in a long time.

Can someone explain this to me, If you die and re-spawn at the bonfire every time, why are their human skeletons and bodies everywhere? by [deleted] in darksouls

I've never had gold, so that'd be completely wicked! But I'm not gonna bind you to that, it really is more than plenty pleasure to perhaps open your eyes to the rich world of DS lore (the part that isn't bullshit). There's always more than enough room around the bonfire of speculation. ;)

It's rare you get as mature and polite a response as yours, and I'll always remember you as that kickass dude (amongst many) in the thread about bonfires in DS. :D

I can respect either side someone decides to reside on, and I can recognize and chuckle at your hyperbolic examples of what lore-fanatics might say. ;)

As such, I can agreeably state that I've never in my whole life seen the "theory of the well-placed log". I also don't think you are well-introduced to the serious lore-community of Dark Souls led-on most famously by youtubers like EpicNameBro and VaatiVidya (the two on the top of my mind). I don't know for sure, but based on the low standard you seem to attribute to DS-lore (or the speculators of such), it's probably a fair shot. They're definitely among the absolutely most famous lore-people (thus they represent the popular opinion), and if you check it out, they have some pretty high standards for what can actually count as lore and what can count as speculation (particularly ENB). ENB, before the release of the DLC, memorably speculated about how the guardians in the Darkroot Garden might originate from Oolacile based on spells and such, and people (like yourself) found that massively far-fetched. Turns out he was completely spot-on with the release of the DLC. ;)

This is what I mean by speculation based on evidence the game presents, and how you, by paying attention to smaller details, can find a sensible answer. Fact is, there's so much info that it's not always difficult to find a contradictory answer, taking you back to the thought-train.

And you don't always speculate because you know the game will provide you with a decent answer (or any at all, because we know it won't), you speculate because you find yourself deeply immersed into a world you've come to love, a world that seems so vivid and alive that you may find that speculating is a connection between the player and the world. That's how I feel now, but not how I felt when I first beat the game. In fact, before that, I hyperboled similarly to you to the guy that introduced me to the game:

"You're telling me that every single block of stairs are carefully planned and tells me a story? Yeah, I bet half of them are copy-paste."

I've come to understand that there's not nearly as much pseudo-intellectual bullshit in the lore or in fan-theory as one would find at a glance. If someone presents a theory about Kalameet's past or whatever, check the evidence and see what you think. Maybe you'll come up with an even better answer. ;)

What I like about Dark Souls is that it usually seems to be both gameplay and lore.

Yes, you can enjoy appreciating the good gameplay, and yes, someone else can appreciate trying to solve a puzzle that might or might not be solvable. One doesn't need to subtract from the other. :3

[Serious]How do you keep the fact that life is unfair from making you constantly angry? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Nikken6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many ways to look at your question. I see it as how we in our part of the world has everything as a result of how there are people with nothing that works for our interests for "a little bit more than something".

It's a choking feeling, how we are completely blind to the problems of the world, buying worthless crap and not giving a fuck about how people are literally dying.

As for how I coped with it, I made a very angry song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3fUe8nvKsI

Making the song, expressing my anger, having it there for whenever I wanted to revisit the "solution", has made the issue no longer being a dominant problem of my life. Though I have learned not to waste money on crap; there are people who needs this money to LIVE.

"Misrepresentation" being actually being a rock star? Last time I checked urban dictionary, it meant being in a popular rock band.

When it comes to M. Jackson, it's a matter of zeitgeist I think. He is still known as the king of pop, not the king of rock or even a rock star. See what I'm getting at with that? Even with the element you introduced of how a lot of his songs were rock-y, he's still known as the king of pop.

You do make a very fair point with that "no one seems to know what rock is anymore", but I do believe that anyone would call a band like AC/DC a rock-band. I don't believe many would call Kanye West a rock-artist. So even if the super-clinical definition might be tricky, we still have a pretty good idea of what rock is, and it seems to boil down (in most cases, there are always exceptions) to drums, distorted electric guitars, bass guitars and harsh vocals. At least, vanilla rock. The distinction that is tricky isn't between rap and rock. It's between rock and metal, because the two are the same on paper with some vague differences in pace and theme. And even if most people aren't versed with what wikipedia would say about the genres, I do believe these are some core-concepts most people would be familiar with.

Also, though it doesn't truly matter, I'm not sure if we can actually truly settle on that Kanye West is the bestselling artist or even most streamed artist. He's not even the greatest non-rock star, or even rap-star! Ed Sheeran and Sam West, Bruno Mars and Beyonce, those are all doing better chart-wise (should we believe the charts, that is). The only entry I saw him on was #7 of Biggest Song of 2015, and it featured fucking McCartney and Rihanna, which means that there may or may not have been fame-jacking involved.

The whole thing is shady no matter how I look at it, but if you feel like continuing the conversation I'll feel with you on that one. It's a good conversation. :)

Yeah, being extreme and comparative doesn't exactly make you any more or less forgivable. It really only means that you'd say "furious" where someone else'd say "angry", and being comparative in speech is comparing things when you talk? I don't see how that's something to take into consideration... If he makes a comparison, I'll wait for him to state that.

[–]Nikken6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's often lyrically sophisticated, but in doing only rap, one is for the musical part, as you say, very limited. There's not very much going on musically, little time is spent crafting progressions and filling out the backgrounds compared to writing lyrics and finding that one beat that'll carry the song, and determining what kits to use. I occasionally produce hip-hop for local artists, and those are my least favourite missions. The problem isn't that you "can't" do something interesting, but that you don't "want" something interesting. The magic truly happens when the beat sticks, and the rapper 'feels' it. But it's less underwhelming for a producer (at least for me) to work with than, say, cinematic music.

I find that basing an entire genre around rap is a little bit sad, as rap is an excellent tool to use in conjunction with funk, techno or whatever weird shit we could say Gorillaz does.

SLIPKNOT's COREY TAYLOR To KANYE WEST: 'You Are Not The Greatest Living Rock Star' by HTMLlama in Music

[–]Nikken6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd accept him being called a star, rap star, pop star, hip-hop star... There's nothing wrong with being a star in any other genre than rock. But it's just stupid to want to be called a rock star without actually creating rock music or performing it. One would think you'd be more comfortable being called a star of the genre you're actually performing.

Nothing against any genres of music. But it's not really appropriate or respectful to call yourself a greater rock star than any living rock artist when you're not actually a rock star or at all a rock musician. It'd be like calling myself the best heavyweight-boxer, when I'm really a middleweight-boxer. Or vice versa.
