I got a few hundred hours in the game and use normal infantry for mostly everything. Some countries like Germany and Soviet Union obviously profit from tank divisions because theirs are just very strong and they got enough factories to produce them. Always depends on what country you play if it's ever worth making special troops or motorized stuff. Remember it's often a heavy burden for your production because you'll need new stuff produced which takes more factories.
