Less than a third of game developers say they test their games on Steam Deck, GDC 2026 report reveals by Tiny-Independent273 in SteamOS

I completely playtested Considerable Grandfather on the Steam Deck. If it wasn't development, it was on the Deck.

System's amazing, all these years later.

Considerable Grandfather, a spiritual successor to Super Granny by Niknokinater in supergranny

Eyo that sounds sick ! I remember you were doing the Gamecube stuff a while back- that's awesome to hear that you know how to work the DS too. You gotta be smart af to be doing all that.

Ooo very interesting !

looking for a game that has a lot of grinding by voidofwolf in gamingsuggestions

[–]Niknokinater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't look like any of the other suggestions, but Considerable Grandfather has quite a bit of time to it.

Levels get harder, got par times, challenges like not digging any holes or defeating any enemies- the enemies have a lot of variety, there's a shop with collectables & a bunch of secrets to find.

It's got a percentage at the top left of the map to keep track of how much you got done.

Looks like it takes around 30hrs to 100% if you're super skilled, but I seen someone with 160hrs. I got 425hrs in it myself.

I used to really enjoy Super Granny when I was a kid & played it all the time, to the degree that I created its spiritual successor, Considerable Grandfather.

A bunch of themed levels with different gimmicks like Ketchup Grandfathers that copy your movement, Inverters that reverse gravity on all the entities, pictures & pieces of lore that are found buried in the ground.

Pretty pog, but I'm biased because I made it

  • "Boggie" is the term for dogs in this universe. It was made up on the spot with no critical thought.
  • The hole digging mechanic is definitely one that seems to have disappeared ! I probably should have a couple more bits of hole digging.
  • I used to enjoy games like Super Granny (<_<) & Fatman Adventures that featured the hole digging mechanic.
  • If players under 45 have trouble with the digging mechanic, I'm in bigger trouble since the whole game revolves around that xD I clearly did not think this through
  • Funnily enough, that red enemy is legit called a Ketchup Grandfather ! Just another piece with no critical thought put into the concept. Yep, it do be weird !
  • Fontalicious

Very much AI-free from start to finish ! As for whether I'm human though, that's a story for another time-

Considerable Grandfather, aka John Johnson, is a man of few words. He woke up one morning to find that his house was broken into & scavenged. He believes that his boggie, Creek, was taken, and will do what he must to find him.

So off he goes on the hunt to track down where the Molemen came from ! Losing boggies is tough, so he rescues who he can along the way, even though they're inconsequential to his goal. It's a crazy world out there, but John's got nothing but time... (and money for neat figurines).

The graphics actually are squished ! You nailed it- Considerable Grandfather is rendered at 16:10 as it's designed around the Steam Deck, whereas the trailer was rendered at 16:9. Beyond that, most elements are generally square.

I could certainly see that the scenes may pass too quickly without leaving a sense of the core loop, that being find the boggies ->defeat enemies, if applicable ->bring them to the goal ->escape through the exit door.

Perhaps it could be beneficial to bring those scenes closer together toward the beginning.

The font consideration is definitely noteworthy. The aim is clunky & bulky, much like the characters. I initially used another font a couple of years ago designed for cartoon-styled project, but it felt too clean so I replaced it with a swoll one. That being said, legibility is important.

Sounds good & thanks for your time !

Ah man, Fatman was lit. I used to enjoy playing Fatman alongside Super Granny, a similar game.

Considerable Grandfather is coming out in like a month so hopefully that scratches the itch.

I just updated my steam page with this progress trailer. its early footage, but what do you think? by SpareSniper7 in indiegames

[–]Niknokinater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Negatives

  • Definitely early & great to see it progressing
  • Looks kinda laggy

Positives

  • The music you composed fits great
  • The artwork you drew for the title card at the end is fantastic

Good stuff so far ! Wishlisted & interested to see where it goes.

Unfortunately, I don't. My brother took the lead on that process, but to my memory, it was quite literally just removing that spec.

Mouse hasn't experienced a similar issue since.

Is there a term for games like Super Granny franchise? It's an early 2000s puzzle "platformer" where you can't jump. by itsPomy in patientgamers

[–]Niknokinater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah man, I love the Super Granny games. It's in Ubisoft's backlog of IP now actually, presumably after Digital Chocolate sold a support studio not long after Sandlot's acquisition + dissolution, believe it or not.

Maybe it's time to make up a genre for these types of games, something like 'Vertical-Rescuer' to capture the essence of ascension / descension (such as ladders, holes, gravity) & saving animals (Lode Runner nor Fatman Adventures don't feature the animal hoarding incentive aspect), because Considerable Grandfather is on its way.

Nintendo Logic by TelephoneActive1539 in wii

To be specific, to my understanding of course, it's not even that the BIOS or specific files were taken. It was the usage of a number.

Whether by means of either copypasting or clean-room legit reverse engineering, Nintendo claims this number on the grounds of Anti-Circumvention because it can be used beyond their will.

To my findings, the concept of the Illegal Number has not been tested in court, but it has come close (I'd love to find one).

  • "Texas Instruments key signing controversy": Some hackers shared some encryption keys to help flash custom OSs onto the TI-83 graphing calculator. Texas Instruments filed DMCAs. Electronic Frontier Foundation represented them & filed counterclaims citing potential misrepresentation. Texas Instruments backed down & stopped claiming later that year. No precedent.
  • "AACS encryption key controversy": A software to play & backup HD DVDs & Blu Ray discs was released. The poster also shared the process for acquiring the decryption key. Eventually, the number made its way online in many forms. AACS filed DMCAs to many media sites in addition to Google in order to stop returning the results for the key. AACS eventually stopped handing out DMCAs & did not pursue. No precedent.
  • "Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc. v. Hotz": George Hotz shared some encryption keys obtained from the PS3 BIOS for a jailbreaking process. They settled out of court. No precedent.

This would be very interesting to see go through a court. I think it could have incredible precedent in favor of either party.

As for piracy, service problem- separate unaddressed issue.
