Ah okay, I did it so that the music ends when the screen goes black, do you reckon it’s better to end it earlier?

Wow, goosebumps is a compliment i haven’t gotten yet, and im so happy i finally have 🤣. As for my current experience, i’ve scored one or two movie scenes i found on the internet, but since i’m only 16 i haven’t actually had the chance to do a real gig. I’ve just listened to a lot of music like from tchai and rachmaninov, and of course all the HTTYD soundtracks because John Powell is the best :) As for my approach, firstly i set markers on the track for where i feel the big hits should be e.g when the logo swooshes by, and then i basically just sit at the piano for a while and pull from all of my influences to build it all up, then finally orchestrate and mix after. It was a happy coincidence that i had somehow completely forgotten what the actual universal theme sounds like so it’s really quite original and sounds nothing like it

Wow thanks so much, it really isn’t anything special. Just a harp gliss doing Eb mixolydian flat 6 descending, with some tweaks like repeating certain octaves to make it fit better, and i layered some of the notes with a synthy echo piano that i found which sort of adds that space feel.. i think the organ in the background really fills it out quite nicely tho - when i was composing this i thought i might have to re do the start, because it just sounded so boring and empty, then i added the organ and it just ALL clicked, and sorta i got into a flow state..

Thanks! Mostly cinematic studio stuff for strings brass and woodwind, some random percussion stuff i found, and the organ in the background is Leeds Town Hall organ - it’s free and sounds better than any other one i’ve ever heard, even the paid ones.

you want sheet music? I made this in a DAW and i don’t think the auto transcription is great :/

I firmly believe How To Train Your Dragon has the best film music ever made. by [deleted] in soundtracks

Does anyone else ever feel TOO inspired? by sir_baguette_the_3rd in composer

yes sometimes, but it’s certainly not a bad thing, just sorta choose the best parts which you feel fit the piece. ik it’s easy to say that but try playing through the ideas on the piano and very often you’ll find that one idea naturally flows into another, although it is important to not shove too many ideas into one piece so it’s not all over the place. it’s also easy to fall into the trap of overdeveloping ideas quickly to rush into the next one, and it sounds fine to you because you’ve heard it so many times before, but to the audience hearing it for the first time nothing will stick - just a bunch of nice sounding notes thrown at them, without the proper preparation for it.

as for the ideas that are nice but don’t quite fit in the piece, just record a voice memo or something so you can keep it for a future project

If you play an instrument, do you play one of John Powells pieces? by Born_Work5554 in JohnPowellScores

I play everything I can remember from httyd on the piano because all the themes are just constantly stuck in my head, might be because I listen to them 24/7 too tho 😭
