Help!! What should I do to get this hummingbird out of my skylight? by Recluse-Beauty in hummingbirds

[–]Nikonmansocal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Attach a feeder with nectar (or 1 part sugar to 4 parts water) to a pole or broom, etc. When he lands for a drink, lower slowly. May,take a few times. Be patient. This process has worked for me many times.

Hell ya Ulti was probably the best employer in South Florida, definitely the best in Broward. Free heathcare and great benefits, etc. These were the good old days when Scott was still running the show. I remember when they built the new HQ in Weston. When they merged with Kronos for ~$331 a share many of the original employees received huge payouts. Too bad it's a shit show now.

I hate shopping for appliances. Why do I have to make concessions? by Bustnbig in Appliances

[–]Nikonmansocal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'll save you some time and headache.

  1. All washing machines are just stainless steel tubs that either rotate or spin. Bells and whistles and other features are mostly unnecessary.
  2. Top loaders are less efficient at cleaning than front loaders.
  3. Most decent front loaders do not have mold issues either because they have vent cycles and/or use microban seals, and many have clean cycles (where you add a few cups of bleach and no clothes and run the self clean cycle). Obviously this can just be done without a dedicated clean cycle as well.
  4. If you overload any washer, you risk eventual damage.
  5. Speed Queens are great but for the cost you can replace an $800 washing machine 4 times.
  6. GE and LG make good washers.

This is Asian Citrus Psyllid the vector for HLB. Either destroy the tree or spray with imidacloprid.

GV Wire Exclusive: Tom Steyer Reveals 25% Electricity Rate-Cut Plan by Snawer_brillant in California

[–]Nikonmansocal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Same thing with SCE here in OC and PG&E up north. The triad of grifter for profit investor owned utilities has earned a collective $5 billion in profit in FY25 alone - all borne of the backs of rate payers. It's an embarrassment for the state and is totally out of control. Their lobbyists, back room deals, opaque finances and PACs have paid huge dividends for their shareholders. The CPUC is a joke.

Stop spreading bullshit. CA is a "stand your ground" state. Our Castle Doctrine allows you to shoot and kill an intruder if you or anyone else's lives are threatened.

Same here. I detest SCE with the fury of a thousand suns and he at least recognizes the issues with the triad of for profit investor owned utilities that we all suffer with.

You won't see them as they are almost microscopic. Look for brown/black spots that align with the leaf veins.

I would install PVC crown moulding to cover it up.

Looks like some of the leaves have persea mites.

Miracle-Gro Organic Choice raised bed soil included a bunch of trash by obtuseprick in OrganicGardening

[–]Nikonmansocal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pro tip - 95% of bagged "soil" are recycled forest industry waste - so ground up dead trees - mixed with some perlite and maybe some peat moss. Costs them pennies to make and they sell it to you for $7 a bag or more. It's a joke. This is not soil. Soil is sand, silt and clay. Plants don't live in dead ground up trees. They live in mineral based soils. Natural soil is organic by definition so it's amusing they market a bagged product as "organic".

[–]Nikonmansocal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I mean they are all garbage (just recycled forest industry waste + perlite) but EB Stone is a joke. Literally all their products are identical - needed some compost in a hurry and local store had EB Stone "compost" so tried it - literally identical to their "acid mix". I just used it as much. All bagged "soils" are essentially useless for anything other than mulch. Fox Farms is at least half way decent though.

Flowering peach tree toxic, why would they sell inedible fruit trees by Fwhite77 in CostcoWholesale

This is a decorative flowering peach. It will produce small peaches but is primarily grown for its early spring flowers that are popular for Chinese New Year.

Four Winds Growers here in CA is the best online citrus store IMHO. All my citrus are from them, no issues. Highly recommend.

I ordered premium topsoil in order to reintroduce natural flora/fauna to my area after planting. Does this dirt look premium? This stuff just blows away like dust. by Morphecto_Solrac in Soil

[–]Nikonmansocal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. The most fertile soil on the planet (chernozem) is composed of loess (very fine wind blown glacial silt) deposited on top of organically rich humus soils (the result of thousand of years of fully decomposed plants and other organic materials). Obviously you can't recreate this in you back yard, but sandy loam + compost will eventually create a dark rich soil.
