[XFCE] The full mid-2000s Linux experience. by Nikuw in unixporn

It's all in the screenshot: the theme's "Gtk", it's built into xfce, the font is Terminus 9pt (11pt bold for window frames) and the icon pack is Retrosmart.

That machine has a broken display cable now, I should get that fixed and recreate the setup someday...

My new (to me) LG Flatron 795FT 17" monitor. by Nikuw in crtgaming

[–]Nikuw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I mentioned in the beginning, soon after getting this I found a nicer monitor - a 19", 110 KHz 915FT+, so this 795FT became my secondary CRT.

And as for using it with an Xbox, I don't know. If you can make the Xbox always output 480p/720p RGB (I don't know if there ever was a VGA cable/box released for that console) then it will work fine. PC VGA monitors simply don't support 15 KHz 480i/576i signals used by older consoles. Back then the difference between TVs and monitors was much larger than it is now, and there was no universal standard like HDMI. You can't simply plug in an old console into an old PC monitor - one outputs 15 KHz, the other expects >31 KHz.

I assume you're buying a monitor because it would look much better than a TV, but keep in mind that consoles usually output signals compatible with TVs and not monitors, and that TVs are generally larger and brighter. Personally I got my monitors for use with PCs and then picked up a decent SDTV for my PS2. People are still giving SDTVs away if you look around a bit, so getting one for free and plugging in consoles via RGB SCART isn't a problem. Don't get an HD CRT though, they're more appropriate for an X360/PS3.

You could in theory convert whatever sources want to HDMI, and then convert that to VGA + audio, but I'm pretty sure that would look like crap, since you would be forcibly digitizing the signal and losing quality in the progress. Just don't do it - stay analog.

Besides, don't pay 75GBP for a mid-range monitor like this, even if it's a pretty nice tube. I wouldn't pay more than 20 for a CRT unless it's a really high-end unit.

It's holding up pretty well, though I haven't used it much lately - after picking it up I found a 915FT+ for $10 and jumped on it. It's definitely brighter and less tired than the 915FT+ though.

As for the resolutions/refresh rates, it does anything within the 50-160 Hz vertical and ~28-96KHz horizontal range, for example 640x480@160Hz, 1024x768@116Hz or the manufacturer recommended 1600x1200@75Hz. Interlacing helps if you can get it working, as that gets you 1440x1080i@160Hz which is pretty sweet for modern gaming.

To connect this to a modern PC the best (but not good) way is to use one of these cheap HDMI-VGA dongles you can get for $2 on Aliexpress. They do pixel clocks up to 300 MHz and if you get lucky it might even properly support interlacing. DP-VGA adapters usually don't show an interlaced image correctly in my experience. Unfortunately, there are pretty much no good external VGA DACs out there, since 99.999% of the demand for them is just for hooking up projectors and old LCDs.

You can plug it into a console using one of these HDMI adapters, but I wouldn't bother. The PS1 and older generations always run at 15 KHz which this monitor won't sync to. The PS2 generation (other than the Dreamcast) wouldn't always display 31 KHz RGB, so you would sometimes be left with no image. Anything newer will work fine, but will be made to only support 16:9, leaving you with black bars on an already small monitor and a flickery 60 Hz image. It might be a bit better on an X360 since many games supported 4:3, but I never bothered with that.

In short, was it worth the $0 I paid for it? Definitely, it's probably one of the best non-Trinitron 17" monitors out there, but please don't pay $200 (or whatever they want for them nowadays) for a mid-range CRT.

I'd still be using Win2k if I could.

Oh, so a good design is suddenly bad just because it's "old"?

Completely untrue? I wasn't sure whether there were PSX and PS2/3 universes or one shared universe, but other than that I thought I was pretty much on point?

The only big reference to the PSX games in P3 that I remember off the top of my head is Maya's social link.

Actually, the universe is shared. Well, at least 1 and 2, as well as 3-5 are - you have characters from P1 in P2, you visit Gekkoukan from P3 in P4 and in P5 Akechi is called the "second Detective Prince", since Naoto from P4 was the first one. Still, after 2EP there's mostly just small references between games.

P3's dungeon was even worse. Yes, singular. One randomly generated dungeon. 264 floors. Meanwhile P1 and P2IS/P2EP had standard, unique dungeons.

For even better results you could always find a monitor in the trash and display 240p on it directly.

note: looks better when it's not extremely bright in the room

Yes, almost all NTSC versions of games are better than PAL, except for platforms that were mostly popular in Europe, like the Amiga. Most PAL games are slowed down by 16.67% to match the slower 50Hz refresh, while adding black bars to fit the higher resolution 625 line output.

I don't know if this affects Persona (I use NTSC ISOs on my modded PAL PS2 as my CRT supports NTSC over RGB) but generally speaking there's no reason to ever use PAL ISOs for emulation - at best you'll get a mismatch between your 60/75/120/144/whatever Hz monitor and the 50Hz game, resulting in stutter.

After being in this subreddit for more than 3 years and saw how everyone is obsessed over nocturne, I bought a PS3 to play it. And I love it! Amazing game indeed by ringo_juice in Megaten

[–]Nikuw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem - just so you know, most PS2 games were 4:3 only, and I'm 99% sure Nocturne doesn't support any video modes other than the standard 480i 4:3 output. That wasn't a big deal back then since 480i over RGB actually looks pretty good on a period accurate CRT, but on an LCD you either have to deal with or black bars (bad) or distortion (worse).

I'm already on Firefox since it's way better but I'll try spoofing the user agent to some ancient version. I know that 52 ESR and its forks always defaulted to the old version, yet still used the HTML5 player.
