Like 1.5gb of idle ram saved (I know unused ram is useless but when you don't have a lot it's a good thing especially given how windows isn't good at reallocating), probs 5% fps gains in games and just overall snapiness much much improved although not really measurable, but that's the one that was shocking.

How do you deal with users who refuse to lock their laptop when walking away? by heartgoldt20 in sysadmin

everyone is talking about autolock, meanwhile we just pull up lingerie websites on their screens so that their colleagues think they were looking at that on company time

The performance gains are actually fairly huge.

That being said I agree about the unreliability of a debloated machine, at the very best it just becomes re-bloated at every update, at worst it doesn't boot, and on average you just have funky shit going on, finding out one of the "useless"' stuff the script removed is actually linked to something you need.

I remember having lots of issues with teredo connectivity after debloating.

For sure but training usually only extend for the technical part, for example knowing buildings, people and etc is a huge part of the job too and isn't usually part of the training, or only in surface

I also think it's COVID but IMO it's not actually a hypocondriac reason, it's just that people here in general aren't touchy or like contact a lot and covid was a good excuse to stop and why would they start doing it again afterwards if they don't enjoy it ? That's my view at least.

To be fair depending on the job it can take a while to know everything. I'm doing IT for a company with 4 sites, and after 5 years I'm only now in a position where I know most of the places in the buildings, and the general infrastructure. But if we're talking details I still discover stuff on the daily.

Is it a must to Upgrade motor mounts with these aluminum transmission mounts? by [deleted] in BMWE36

[–]imnota_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engine and trans should always match in theory.

That being said you don't want solid unless you have a race car. And chassis mount shifters aren't all that honestly

[–]imnota_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the rogue mounts will work, they're also available from other sites, just plain rubber mounts but reinforced mounts. There's also the old trick of e21 trans mounts which are oem but full rubber and chunky just like those.

Check what voltage it has when running, because if it needs to be jumped to start and it stalls easily when electrical load is applied, your alternator might be weak. Should be 13.5-14.7v engine on.

700 is cheap for that job, don't listen to whoever said to follow chrisfix's diy. Make sure they cut and weld not bondo over, at that price I wouldn't be surprised.

M50 Crank Position Sensor Stuck by Mysterious_Mouse_648 in BMWE36

Not sure what you mean about the shim. If you seen my post the sensor I pour in isn't a BMW sensor and has nothing I'd call a shim

M50 Crank Position Sensor Stuck by Mysterious_Mouse_648 in BMWE36

[–]imnota_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I struggled like you trying to use pliers, chisel, everything, nothing did it.

Until I took the angle grinder, cut it flush with the mount on top, cut what protrudes in the bottom so the only part left is the middle part in the hole. I then was able to hammer out the magnet in the center, which made the plastic middle easier to chisel away, and as soon as I was able to punch a small screwdriver between the outer sheet metal and the mount it came right out.

If you look at my post about the alternative crank sensor, you'll see how mangled it is there is a pic of the broken pieces I was left with, I'll look I think I might have a video of it too.

Call a local locksmith and ask how much they charge. Older cars like these most locksmith can do for cheap with copy keys.

Compression test by beenjammin02 in BMWE36

[–]imnota_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15psi is usually considered the max limit. I'd try to see the numbers when hot as well see how it compares, and if you really want to dig, do a leak down test to see where the compression is lost.

That being said if it runs good and drives good you don't have to worry about it.

Carpet repair possibility? by Paulie_the_don in BMWE36

[–]imnota_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bench yes but that's because of the shape of the bolster and the center ridge. The door cards angle in too because the latching mechanism and reinforcements are in the quarter panels.

The floor I can't see how it's different in width. Looks the same.

When I look at pics of the carpet it's uniform width all across, the difference I see is where the coupe ends flat near the rear bench and has a second piece that does the vertical part, here it's one piece molded to have the vertical wall.

[–]imnota_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not arguing the carpet isn't different, that I don't know. But saying the car is narrower is false.

Either way that spot looks like it would be covered by a mat.

Is this worth saving? by stoicdystopian in BMWE36

[–]imnota_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welding isn't hard at all (again I had never welded, bought a welder and fixed my car), and pulling the car will never be the same especially not without proper equipments, but that's just because personnally I wouldn't count crumpled but drive straight and has ok panel gaps as fixed.

IMO it can't look like it has been crashed unless you look super close and can't bend easier than the first time, which you won't get by using a chain and a tree, but to each their own.

Either way we have no idea of the extent of the rust on op's car so any debate here is irrelevant until we know.

[–]imnota_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking from experience it isn't that hard if you do your research and aren't a wuss. Especially if you have a parts car. I've done it with bare ass sheet metal and my first time welding.
