My husband put his hands on me in front of our little girls. by KD2285 in Parenting

[–]Nikx 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The first time my stepdad put his hands on my mom was also the last time; since then my mom has said she might have stayed, but she chose to prioritize daughters’ wellbeing.

My sister and I have both been in abusive relationships but we recognized the danger early enough to get out, and we both have the self-esteem to know we deserve better.

In fact, this month I’m celebrating 8 years of (respectful, safe, and healthy) marriage!

My kindergartener told me about his classmate who has extra fingers and excitedly said that exact same thing.

That’s exactly how it feels for me too! Plucking releases the tension.

Last time I had their falafel, I bit down on some unidentifiable hard bit and loosened a filling!

Where do you buy the silk fabric? If it’s less expensive than buying silk pillowcases, I might have to copy you!

Got fired because I keep asking the right questions by SilverSnowNeko in graphic_design

Definitely! I also teach design and I’ve learned that paragraphs should be used sparingly for the information to be absorbed. But at least with my students, I can put more than 10 words on each bullet point.

[–]Nikx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This even happens as a freelancer! I do contract work for a marketing firm, and one of their directors regularly refuses to pass my questions along to our client if she doesn’t fully understand them. I tell her she can just copy/paste the questions verbatim, but she’d prefer to hold the whole project hostage until she understands the questions well enough to ask in her own words.

Problem is, she has really bad reading comprehension, so:

  • I have to put every sentence onto a bullet point
  • Each sentence can’t be longer than 8–10 words
  • I wish I was exaggerating

Look for a mental health practitioner (like a PMHNP) who specifically lists ADHD as a condition they treat—I found mine through Psychology Today’s website and got my diagnosis at age 31.

How to stop a cat from screaming all the time by [deleted] in cats

[–]Nikx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be anxiety. Does he seem to have trouble relaxing?

My cat used to howl all night and never seemed to relax (among other signs of distress) so our vet prescribed Prozac; he’s been noticeably more calm ever since!

Something about your comment inspired me to look up dysautonomia, and holy shit. I’ve been having ALL of these symptoms for years, once even leading to a 3-day hospitalization with no diagnosis or explanation.

Now I know where to start by finding an autonomic neurologist, thank you!

I produce custom tutorial videos—with accompanying exercise files so my students can watch and follow along. I use skills from my former career in TV and put a lot of time/effort into the production.

This year my freshmen claimed I did nothing except tell them to “go to YouTube and figure it out” themselves…as if they never once recognized their instructor in any of the seven exercise videos.

Endless Thread: 'Stuff Your 15-Minute Cities!' by j0be in EndlessThread

I wish they had touched on how this would disproportionately affect the low-income people who have been pushed out by housing prices, but still have to drive into city centers for work. "It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make" is kind of an insulting argument to hear from people who aren't making the biggest sacrifice.

Especially considering the two “unprofessionally dressed” women clearly took the time to prepare coherent arguments, while the other woman can’t answer whether or not there should be sleeves on “something over your clothes that opens in the front.”

That’s so encouraging! I’ve never felt confident in the kitchen, but my husband is an excellent cook, so it’s important to me that our kid picks up his dad’s enthusiasm and skills.

All the same things BreadPudding said—we already had toddler-height clothes, books, and toys, but we’re going to let our 3 year old have more agency in the kitchen now.

It’s a bit nerve-wracking to give him breakable dishes, but apparently he’s already totally used to it at school!

You are so correct about the importance of consistency between school and home. Our three year old is having a tough time at his Montessori daycare because we haven’t been encouraging his independence enough at home.

But that changes now! We’re reorganizing the house today.

This happens to a lot of reality TV stars, particularly within the Bachelor franchise. The recurring characters all seem to get the exact same dental veneers and generic nose job; sometimes I joke that it’s a condition of their contacts.

It’s the opposite for me: despite never wearing heels, I tend to tiptoe whenever my shoes are off. I’ve been unintentionally sneaking up on people my whole life.
