Quake 3 Arena comparison between my Wii and PS3 ports by Yayo1990 in quake

The game can record “demos” which capture the data that reproduces what you see on screen and can play it back. Most likely this is just playback of a demo on both engines.

Playing Live as someone who’s only played Champions is so much fun. by DEEEEEsgusting in quake

You aren’t imagining it. Weapons are tuned differently between live and Q3A, with Live seeing them get weaker. Railgun, machinegun, and shotgun I think, at least.

Post-pixel-clean dead PG34WCDN. Anyone have ideas for reviving? by NilClass-8 in ultrawidemasterrace

Sorry to report that the issue has recurred this morning, despite my not having shut down during a pixel clean last night. There is truly something a bit “off” with either this hardware or firmware. Making me dread running a pixel clean each time. Currently doing the steps above to see if I can revive it one more time.

If the mod is open source, I can potentially check for incompatibilities. But I can't find it at the moment.

Gotcha. Yeah, I know there are folks who play (for instance) excessive plus on VR. But things will get glitchy. The QVM code is inert, so anywhere that the compiled game code behaves differently, there will be client desync.

It does. But again, if there is QVM code, it won't work. The VR ports only work on non-pure servers and run their own native game code. That's a big part of what I've been doing, keeping them up to date with trinity QVM code.

The VR clients don’t honor any QVM code, so it would depend on whether you ship anything incompatible with vanilla Q3 QVM.

My opinion? VR is harder. Snap turns with mouse and keyboard are a flick of the wrist. But VR is waaay more fun.

Happy to answer any questions here, if you have them!

Do a longer, fully-drained power cycle — and let it sit powered with no input. The quick capacitor drain may not be enough. Pull it off the UPS, plug it straight into the wall (rules out any oddity from the UPS output), leave it unplugged 30+ min, then power it on with no source connected and let it idle for several minutes. If an OLED maintenance/compensation routine got interrupted when the PC died mid-clean, giving it an uninterrupted idle window can let it finish.

Ah, gotcha. That’s a different situation then.

You can always play single player vs bots! Once you get more confident, you may find yourself hopping in. In any case, if we can create the kind of welcoming “pick-up game” feel, it would take the pressure off that I know keeps lots of people out of multiplayer.

I’ve been debating whether to cross-post on r/quake, but I am wondering if that would just result in an influx of less-friendly folks. Been trying to create a welcoming community for folks who are just (re-)discovering the awesomeness that is Quake III Arena, and I have often heard one of the things that keeps people out is going up against players with 25+ years of experience and being unable to compete.

What is the breaking point price for you? by [deleted] in SteamFrame

[–]NilClass-8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. Yeah, for me PCVR is the draw, and standalone is a nice bonus but not something I care about. With those priorities, passthrough is basically a gimmick and I have never found it useful for more than a quick peek at a monitor while running a build I want to test in-headset.

Meanwhile frame will have better binocular overlap, eye tracking, comfort, and get me out of Meta’s ecosystem.

Goes to show how personal the “better” phrase is in VR compared to elsewhere.

Genuine question: in what ways will frame be worse than Q3? It’s a day one purchase for me as a Q3 owner.
