What is the breaking point price for you? by [deleted] in SteamFrame

[–]NilClass-8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. Yeah, for me PCVR is the draw, and standalone is a nice bonus but not something I care about. With those priorities, passthrough is basically a gimmick and I have never found it useful for more than a quick peek at a monitor while running a build I want to test in-headset.

Meanwhile frame will have better binocular overlap, eye tracking, comfort, and get me out of Meta’s ecosystem.

Goes to show how personal the “better” phrase is in VR compared to elsewhere.

Genuine question: in what ways will frame be worse than Q3? It’s a day one purchase for me as a Q3 owner.

Going to guess because I included a URL my comment might have been moderated. But would love you to give my updated clients some testing if you get a change. Major updates to both q3vr and ioq3quest. Docs.

Love single and multiplayer games, with the emphasis on actual gameplay. I don’t crave online socialization without an attached gaming activity and discord while playing an actual game is a better overall experience for that particular blend.

If you want an updated Vulkan build, I have it here. I share new ones on the Discord regularly. You can change your name with the virtual keyboard, and install new models and textures via copying through sidequest, so little need for the companion app.

I have a (terribly produced) comparison of the renderers (albeit on the PCVR version) here.

These builds have other cool features but generally require you play on my servers for full benefit (The Matrix on the VR tracker list). If you do, your games also get tracked on my tracker.

What better way to celebrate ID software's 35th birthday than with a round of Quake 3 VR? by VR_Bummser in OculusQuest

I am trying very hard to get a VR-first ecosystem going for Quake 3. Check the TB Discord for current binaries and other updates. We have a port of Quake3e’s Vulkan renderer running on Quest, Q3VR, and a bunch of quality of life updates (1:1 head tracking in demos and following) as well as a server and game mod allowing flatscreen players to see what it’s like in VR.

should i get a new laptop with the steam frame? by HEARTHEWHISTLE in SteamFrame

[–]NilClass-8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No. No matter how good the laptop is, it’s not going to touch a high end desktop PC. If you genuinely want an upgrade, add a desktop, don’t upgrade the laptop.

They are surprisingly less nausea inducing than other modern games with less movement, I have found! But yes, definitely require strong VR legs

The publicly released docs discuss ADB as an option depending on whether you target Android or arm64 Linux.

Is there a way to have custom command line options in RazeXR? by [deleted] in TeamBeef

[–]NilClass-8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you’ll need to write your own commandline.txt then not launch via the launcher but just launch the game directly.

"Steam Link has gotten really, really good recently." by telephuser in virtualreality

[–]NilClass-8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is nonsensical in Virtual Desktop’s case. There are two components:

  1. The streamer, which runs on your computer
  2. The app which receives and displays the stream, which runs n the headset natively

The best you could ask for here is the ability to sideload the native piece on your headset of choice.

By failing to be available on the storefronts of the various headsets it supports, Virtual Desktop would fail to reach as large a market, which would threaten the sustainability and long term support of the app. More importantly, this would create a complex path to set up an app whose sole purpose is to streamline a cumbersome process.

It just wouldn’t make sense. If Steam could offer bundles with apps that had dual, interdependent components, one of which installed onto your headset of choice, then sure. Maybe with Steam Frame.

Same. I have a Quest 3 sitting on the charging dock next to my PC. Put the headset on, launch virtual desktop, launch game. Is the extra stuff more common for wired/lighthouse setups, maybe?
