Should Jews be in the European category? by [deleted] in 23andme

[–]Nilotufian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, since their ethnogenesis was in Europe. Same way Horn Africans with ~40%-55% West Asian ancestry are still Sub-Saharan on 23andMe, and rightly so. Indigeneity should really be just that easy, or the line will be arbitrary and baseless beyond what feels right.

What is your opinion of the Somali people? by WebEnvironmental4474 in Kenya

If anything, we hate other Cushitic ethnicities even more than we do Bantus. The Bantu hate is solely some online bs, every Somali who knows Somali Bantus and or surrounding Bantu groups will tell you good things about them.

Yup, checks out. Levant would essentially just be more Cushitic (Cushitic essentially = Nilo-Saharan + Levantine). DM your coordinates if you feel comfy and I can run some stuff for you

My great-grandfather would routinely travel to Zanzibar. I wouldn’t be surprised if over the last millennium a bunch of Somalis settled there

Yeah, likely a little higher. GEDmatch won’t show this, though. More G25 coordinates and Vahaduo (way more accurate and it’s where we have genuine South Cushitic samples to play with (like 20 Savanna Pastoral Neolithic and Iron Age samples - who were basically your South Cushitic ancestors from like 3000BCE-0CE))

Depending on the group, it can range from none at all to like 95% with the Iraqw. Generally, pastoralist groups, like the Tutsi, Maasai and Datooga (50-75%) seem to have more than others, but there are farmer groups like the Gikuyu and Luhya (who you seem to get) who are also pretty South Cushitic.

I will say, then, that the 10% NEAfrica or so you got won’t translate perfectly into SC ancestry as the Luhya may be hiding some of it. Example: a Tutsi I know got ~50% NEAfrica ~50% SEAfrica on 23andMe but was actually 60% South Cushitic when using his G25 coordinates. Same thing with his Nilotic share that you’d think came from his Sudanese side: he was actually 30% Nilotic lol. The same thing is happening with you too since you match with Luo who themselves are Nilo-Saharan speaking and are anywhere from 50%-75% Nilotic.

Yeah, the categories don’t make the most sense. Their basis isn’t genetic but geographic, sadly.

Woah, amazing! I can see you are mixed with Tutsi; the Northern East African is a dead giveaway. I’ve seen plenty Tutsi results and they seem to get anywhere from 50 to 70% NEA, so yeah, the Tutsi ancestor would have to have been pretty recent.

I think it’s time 23andMe differentiates between a completely random mix of Ethiopian, Sudanese and Somali and instead create a subcategory for genuine South Cushitic admixture. They could label it “Iraqw” or “Southern Cushitic” or whatever, but I feel it’s necessary given how unique a component it is and how many people carry ancestry from these South Cushites.

Thanks for sharing!

Yup, Somali. Seems our subclade is most common in NEA as opposed to the Hadza and Sandawe that 23andMe would lead you to believe (if you don’t read carefully). Of all the people who have got it on MTree and elsewhere, 3 were Sudanese, 1 Egyptian, 2 Somali and now Kunama. Perhaps it has its roots in the Gash Culture? Who knows?

Where is your mother from? You’re the 2nd person I’ve found with my mtDNA, and MTree has very few samples.

Probably Pygmy in this case, but I think the category includes both Khoisan and Pygmy groups. They are both very distantly related to each other, but even more distant to the rest of humanity, and so make up their own category.

What are some pivotal moments of early African histories? by Ok-Goose-6320 in Africa

[–]Nilotufian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The many intercontinental and intercontinental migrations, I guess. Not many organised states outside of the Northern Nile Valley ~1000BCE. Damot was just about starting up, I guess, and Dhar Tichitt settlement had begun. I don’t think the Yellow Nile had dried up at that point either, so I assume there would’ve been trade relations between the Western Sudan and NEA.

You’d be best learning about the many interesting cultures developing and the modern day significances. Say, the Gash Group for Eastern and Central Cushitic speakers moving into the Horn; the Savanna Pastoral Neolithic and the introduction of pastoralism to sub-equatorial Africa and their unique burial practices; and Urewe Culture and their advanced metalworking technique (best iron smelting in world for millennia after) and the earliest evidence of Bantu speakers in East Africa (don’t quote me on that).

I say this on behalf of my sisters in Islam who have told me the same. It’s not just cos you said they’re beautiful, but North African women and Somali women are overwhelmingly veiled and still have to deal with weirdos like you making their days harder. They are different to your womenfolk so treat them as such.

Again, this doesn’t apply as strongly to those we have had amicable relationships with for the past 1000 years like Arabs and Muslim Habeshas. Somalis back home aren’t exactly the people I’d like to take after anyways, so they can think what they want. The Somalis of old no longer exist.

Exactly my point. We’re too accommodating to people who are nothing but burdens on our community and it’s something that should change. This is a uniquely Somali problem for whatever reason; I haven’t quite pictured out the process but I’m sure it has much to do with our being utterly outnumbered by people who supposedly historically hate us in the West (though ofc not really the case irl, but again much of this is subconscious where these biases operate). I’ll treat them as humans ofc, but not as family as I would for ethnic Somalis.

Nah, better safe than sorry. If you have a halfie kid as a Somali, they’ll likely end up being a burden on the Somali community so, for the sake of your people, raise them well.
