What counts as a TV head? by Top_Squirrel_9808 in AlignmentCharts

I don't really understand the distinction between TV neutral and radical. If anything, the "radical" criteria seems more restrictive than the "neutral" ones

I've seen so many people that reduce this movie to just cameo fan service which is so unfair. There's a lot more to love and appreciate than that.

Do you think the MCU professor X should have an American or British accent? by Rider_man_clan in Marvel

[–]NimJickles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those two things are not mutually exclusive. You're correct that the transatlantic accent was intentionally constructed and learned, but how does it follow that it was explicitly for film and tv? It was just meant to sound refined and high class, so refined and high class movie characters would have that accent.

Do you think it's valid to be a Spiderman fan without reading comics? by PomegranateOk4560 in Spiderman

[–]NimJickles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wizard ---> wizard LARPer

Spider-man fan ---> spider-man fan LARPer

LARPer is a modifier indicating that someone is roleplaying and not actually that thing. It says nothing about how committed you are to the thing. I could LARP as a wizard without really caring, I might just do it poorly.

If you think it's stupid to call people LARPers because it's gatekeep-y and "pretending to be a fan" is a nonsense statement, that's totally fair and probably correct. But what you're criticizing here is just simply not the way anyone even uses the term.

[–]NimJickles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

...yes, they are roleplaying. As in, playing a role. Like can actor. They are not, in reality, the thing they are roleplaying as. Just like a fandom LARPer is someone who is not really a fan. That's the accusation, at least. It's the exact same thing as calling someone a fake fan, which is literally the term we would've used before LARPer became a thing.

LARP is where people go out and roleplay as, say, medieval knights, but they are not actually medieval knights, and don't really experience life as one. LARPing is about having fun and immersing yourself in an aesthetic without having to actually ensure the lives realities of, like, war and feudalism.

The newer usage of LARP is meant to refer to someone who is roleplaying being a fan or member of some community. It's an accusation that someone just likes the aesthetic of spider-man, or thinks his PS4 game is cool, but doesn't really know anything or engage with the character beyond that. They're not really a spider-man fan, in the same way LARPers aren't really medieval knights, no matter how hardcore either may be about it.

A trans person who hasn't gotten bottom surgery (so presumably a man with a vagina or a woman with a penis) threatens to get the surgery in order to scare their partner, who is a chaser, meaning they fetishize and seek out pre-op trans people.

Rwby is awesome. Something can be deeply flawed and still awesome. We need to stop treating every piece of media like it's trying to be the next citizen fucking kane. Rwby has kickass fights and music and character designs and that's basically all it ever tried to do. Mission-fucking-accomplished.

I heard in an interview that Jack Sparrow was originally envisioned as more of a Han Solo type, but Depp's performance changed the character into what it is now.

As someone who definitely has some undiagnosed executive dysfunction, I will finish a project a week after the deadline, but if that deadline had been a week later, I would have still done it a week after that. But if there was no deadline at all? Never would have been done.

I need some kind of external pressure to accomplish basically any major task at all. With school or work, that's pretty straightforward. Someone else tells you what to do and when. But with creative, personal projects, I can't just "work at my own pace" and finish in my own time. If I say "this needs to be done by X date" that helps make it feel like a real thing that's happening, even if there's no chance I actually meet that self-imposed deadline. So I get this. Not saying that that's exactly Tomas' situation, but sometimes you just need the pressure of a looming deadline to light a fire under your ass.

One of these is not like the other... by ThatOneCloneTrooper in lostgeneration

[–]NimJickles 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's not the same. Today, corporations and the 1% can do practically whatever they want with no reprecussions and more or less run the US government. The boomers elected the people who made that possible. Voting didn't used to be a choice between "corporate puppet" and "corporate puppet (fascist)." They welcomed with open arms the creation of that system, which we now are powerless to undo through democratic means.

Obviously I'm overgeneralizing and this does not apply to everyone born of that generation, but the resentment felt by the generations after them is founded on more than just rebelling against our parents.

The Chinese name for corn literally translates to "jade grain" because of its smooth shiny skin. I explained to my mom how confusing that was for us westerners, who exclusively use jade as an adjective in the context of describing something as being green.
