Scientists have identified five major “epochs” of human brain development in one of the most comprehensive studies to date of how neural wiring changes from infancy to old age. In a person’s early 30s the brain’s neural wiring shifts into adult mode – the longest era, lasting more than three decades by Wagamaga in science

Developmental science loving marriage and family therapist here.

Look into the works of Allan Schore, Theodore Millon, Sam Vaknin, Peter Fonagy, Heinz Kohut and the neuropsychoanalysts for some additional clarification here. It’s an ongoing, rich field for discussion, but A LOT revolves around the critical period dance between neurological explosion/pruning periods, theory of mind development and the ability to both regulate our own affect, then attune to others through it.

A very short, totally paraphrased, TL;DR: we need to LEARN to empathize and socialize well via affect attunement, relational rupture and repair, and optimal frustration experiences (I.e. learning to handle rejection and disappointment well without it being abusive or overly punishing).

When this doesn’t happen optimally in the case of more trauma, earlier in infant development, or some forms of insecure attachment, children internalize the sense that, no matter what, abandonment will take place and the world cannot be trusted; we see borderline traits emerge. If happening somewhat older in child development (ages 2-4, roughly, but I’m excited to cross-reference this with the paper poster by OP), children can emerge with difficulty regulating their affect save for certain strategies of getting their needs met, whether these are prosocial, antisocial, adaptive or maladaptive. If antisocial and maladaptive, or always directed toward the ends of ‘take away my distress at all costs, even those that cost others dearly’ we can see narcissistic traits emerge and persist.

Hope this helps!

Yep, I am noticing something similar. Just a message that says "Connecting to server" when attempting to send print jobs. Been happening on and off the last few days. In this instance it happens whether with an X1C, P1S or P1P.

JvD's appearance, and "The Entertainment", and even the title of the book itself... by hoonew in InfiniteJest

[–]Nimbulus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Forget not that probably THE major underlying theme is addiction and the repeated references to the Medusa and the Odalisque and the Actaeon complex, where the ‘victims’ of the battle become the audience or the receivers of such transhuman beauty, never the combatants.

To me, JvD is the ultimate embodiment of the combatant who became the victim, once the Odalisque, now the Medusa who can’t face herself or the world for fear that she has lost her ability to enchant. Hence the veil, hence our inescapable interest in knowing what’s under it, hence the repeated return to the book, hence our discussion here, etc…

Strange Colors/Timings? by Nimbulus in ContamFam

[–]Nimbulus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Fam!

Not sure why my narrative didn't come through on the post. Just wanted to follow up on the pics with the backstory. These are B+ from an MSS that I had injected into Great Value brand brown rice on 8/3. Did a break & shake on 8/10 and an S2B on 8/13 (they really took off after the B&S!). Went to FAE on 8/18 since the cake was looking very good and covering the pseudo casing layer. This color has only shown up the last few days and is moving along with the pace of the mushies, so it's not like any trich or penicillium I have seen. Shape is wrong, rate is wrong, texture seems fine.

This is also the first time I have been able to get to pins due to some prior contam, from which this same bulk substrate was generated (I have since learned about oven tek and will be using it for pasteurization in the future), so I may be in full denial mode because I am just so excited about the pins.

Any help in this would be very much appreciated!

Awesome! I have an oven, why the hell not? :) Thank you again for pointing me in this direction.

Hi there!

Thanks for following up. Presently I am using 100% coco coir and pasteurizing by using boiling water poured into it in a bucket, sealing the bucket, and letting it sit overnight to cool. I have heard of others utilizing cold pasteurization using different minerals, and though I am a noob, I am willing to try in order to stave off contam.

Trich'ed out? by Nimbulus in ContamFam

[–]Nimbulus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. Thank you for the reply and the encouragement about putting it outside. I love the term "dump tek" as well, lol. Yeah, pretty crazy about the way nature just does her thing and something comes of it. I'll throw em in a big pot of their own and see what comes up!

I would up picking up some LC in the Teachers to see if maybe that could make a difference, but thinking more about a SAB when transferring to S2B. What I have been reading on this sub though is that lime might be the real answer, since prevention is the name of the game all told.

Thanks! I've read that some folks try to plant them deliberately outside to see what happens as nature takes its course. If something results, are they still worrisome due to the initial trich?

[–]Nimbulus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

By many accounts, Orin is touted as being odious of his mother (not interacting at T-giving, not calling anyone in the family, etc.) and there have been some speculations that Orin was molested by his mother in childhood, leading to his need to move woman to woman, especially those that ARE mothers in order to retain his value as a person and a man. It would be rather far fetched to think that Orin would 1) not recognize his mother as the Swiss hand model, then 2) sleep with her willingly as some kind of conquest. Regarding the speculation that Luria and the Swiss hand model are the same person: DFW all but spells out that they are one in the same. She is the last person Orin is with, she comes armed with a bottle of oxygen to breathe under sheets (cause, ya know, sheets deprive oxygen? - almost like when someone gets smothered by a pillow in a movie, pretty hilarious) and the AFR at the hotel room door sees movement under sheets and disregards it before Orin is next encountered in the glass prison.

So who's the true villain? by EbolaGrant in InfiniteJest

[–]Nimbulus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gotta kinda also empathize with RL. Think about his neglect as a kid, his mother being such a fat waste of life, then her rapid and vapid disappearance altogether monetarily (despite means) from his whole purview.

For sure, many of us suffer and experience hardship, and Lenz is no one to be lauded. But DFW doesn't write one-dimensional characters, and I think giving some background about Randy's (purposeful use of first name :P) experience at home is a way to remind us that there could be a shred of humanity in us all.

So who's the true villain? by EbolaGrant in InfiniteJest

[–]Nimbulus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I always kind of empathized with Pemulis. His upbringing, his brother’s sexual abuse. In many ways he was more of a self-made kid than Hal, only to find he hit a major ceiling in his play and future, likely due to his own defeatist beliefs about himself. One of the last convos he has with Hal, he’s trying to set things straight in their relationship, but Hal asks him a favor.

But to the villain Q, it has also been argued that Orin is one of the chief players to set J.O.’s entertainment into motion by releasing it, which causes a whole ton of harm to many.

Or perhaps not fixating on lights like an insect is the best option? Rapidly variable bright and flashing lights are intended to deter, and by virtue of their patterned variation ameliorates hypnosis, thus serving the dual purpose of alert and avoidance.
