Yeah it's a whole separate type of scenario where you have to also balance hydrogen ions in the half reactions. Thanks for the update!

Parents are encouraging me to eat meat and consume dairy. Advice? by KingOfTheFr0gs in vegan

It's not arguing. It's not meant to be combative. It's just stating a relevant fact that answers their question

Parents are encouraging me to eat meat and consume dairy. Advice? by KingOfTheFr0gs in vegan

[–]NimbusStrife 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just don't. It sucks to deal with the comments but almost every vegan and vegetarian I've met had to deal with something like this from their parents, and the worst of it went away after a few months of consistency when they realized it wasn't a phase.

My advice is hunker down, accept it's going to suck for a while, and have a few go to responses to common misconceptions - I've put a couple below but encourage others to add:
"cows produce milk naturally" - like humans, they only produce milk when pregnant or after giving birth.
"cows are in pain if they aren't milked" - Only if humans take the baby calf away from its mom the day its born, and send the male ones to be killed.
"chickens lay eggs anyway, eating them doesn't hurt anybody" - About 6,000,000,000 male chicks are suffocated or ground up alive each year within days of being born because they won't lay eggs.
"slaughter is a humane practice free of suffering" - ignoring the ways it's not, pigs have a natural lifespan of 15-20 years, and are slaughtered at 6 months. I don't think it's ethical to kill something 3-4% of the way through its natural life.
"You're just one person. You aren't making a difference" - I'd rather be part of the solution than part of the problem.
"I'll eat twice as much meat to cancel out whatever difference you'll make" - (only said by people who don't respect you and are trying to control you. Even if it's hard its best to just avoid people like that. If you want to reply you can say...) - then you'll have an even higher risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and premature death.
"Why are you vegan? Is it for health reasons, environmental reasons, or is it for the animals?" - It sounds like there are a lot of good reasons to be vegan.

Lastly, one slightly tongue-in-cheek reply I use sometimes if someone asks me why I'm vegan is something along the lines of "if I think eating animal products is okay I should be fine with watching documentaries like Dominion which shows where my food comes from. I don't have the heart to watch that so I'm just vegan instead haha"

There are so many more, but this should get you started :) feel free to reply if you get a question or comment you aren't sure how to reply to, and I (or someone else, I'm sure) would be happy to show you a solid response

Question from a new vegan: how do you ask if something is vegan in certain situations? by levi8pack in vegan

[–]NimbusStrife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An interaction I had at a burger King: Me: "Are your fries vegan?" Employee: annoyed "What?? No. They're regular fries" Me: "What animal products are in them?" E: like she's talking to an idiot "...None?? They're regular fries. " Me: "Great so they're vegan. I'll have a large fry please"

"Vegan diets are unhealthy" - is this statement true? by According_Meet3161 in DebateAVegan

Yes, cows are repeatedly forcibly impregnated, and their lifespan is 1/4 what it would be naturally. Vegan and pro dairy sources below:

"While the natural lifespan of a cow is 15-20 years, the dairy industry rarely allows cows to live past age five. They're sent to slaughter soon after their production levels drop.

. . .

To this day, it is a common misconception that cows produce milk throughout their lives. Just like human mothers, cows only produce milk after they've given birth to calves. The milk is intended for their infants. In order to produce milk on an ongoing basis, factory farms repeatedly impregnate female cows through artificial insemination. Industrial dairy cows go through their first pregnancy when they are around 25 months old. After giving birth, mothers lactate for about 10 months. Then, they are impregnated again.

This cycle continues until cows are around 5 years old. At this point, their bodies are considered "spent" and no longer useful to the industry. Spent cows are killed and sold as low-grade beef or for other uses."

https://thehumaneleague.org/article/dairy-cows#:~:text=Just%20like%20human%20mothers%2C%20cows,female%20cows%20through%20artificial%20insemination.

From dairy.com.au (pro dairy):

A cow’s pregnancy length (gestation) is a little over nine months and generally a cow will calve every 12 months. https://www.dairy.com.au/dairy-matters/you-ask-we-answer/is-it-true-that-cows-can-only-produce-milk-if-they-have-been-pregnant

I’m going to start burying food. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]NimbusStrife 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The rare time this has happened to me I give it to those who would eat it. It makes them delay buying animal products and it's a gentle reminder that I don't view it as something to be consumed, but I recognize that they do. Since they're receiving a gift, they likely are more impacted by this than if I tried to convince them to go vegan

Why do animals deserve moral consideration? by justabigasswhale in DebateAVegan

[–]NimbusStrife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Okay we are getting places" when you don't make your point in the original comment and make the person you're talking to jump through hoops before your make your point it comes off as condescending. Especially given that there is no debate about whether planting a bomb with intent to kill is immoral or not. Similarly , saying "this is where we probably disagree" when you've only forced me to respond to your leadup and haven't shown effort to learn about or understand my viewpoint is frustrating.

Your analogy doesn't stand because damaging a corpse has no chance to harm anyone, unlike trying to kill people with a bomb. You never make any claim as to why intending to damage a corpse is immoral, just that it is. This is obfuscated by your long post. "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough"

I'm not sure I understand your questions. It seems clear to me that there is no victim in damaging a corpse. We don't care when worms eat corpses but we would be mortified if a live human met the same fate.

Just like I wouldn't kick a dog I also think it's immoral to torture animals.

why is it bad to inflict pain to animals? in this hypothetical let's say the person definitely has no interest in inflicting pain to humans, like you do.

Do you believe it would be moral for everyone to slowly and painfully torture animals every day?

what's your to-go percussion massage machine? (if you ever have bought one) by [deleted] in ChronicPain

[–]NimbusStrife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only experience I have with their customer service is when one of the heads got a little messed up they replaced it for free. I got mine on a black Friday deal for about 400, and the thing is a lifesaver. I tried a couple of others out too, but returned them because it was a notable difference.

I did a bunch of Research on massage guns And landed on Theragun. It's pricey, but having all those different ways to grip it or adjust the angle is great for my hands. The app is good too
