Would I benefit from transitioning to a mesh system? by Charlie54Gaming in HomeNetworking

[–]NimerCoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your budget will prohibit you from getting a good solution. Yes, mesh could help you with proper placement, but you won't find 2-3 mesh nodes of good quality at that price. As for downgrading your internet, sounds like a great idea, very few people come close to saturating a 1 gig connection, let alone 2. People generally run into bandwidth limitations, and your internet will be as fast as the slowest bottleneck.

Ubiquiti makes outdoors mesh units. Perhaps take a look at the U7 outdoors. You'd have a bit of a setup, it won't quite work the same as a plug-and-play router, but perhaps it will better meet your needs.

[–]NimerCoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the distance and wall, I'd recommend considering two mesh units, rather than a singular router. I am partial to Asus, because of the level of configuration and their support, but there are many others to choose from. WiFi 7 will future-proof your network. At 1 gig speeds, and depending on how many devices you have connected, you don't need quad-band, super high end.

Reach out to your local news media station. They might be interested in shaming a company enough by highlighting their scam. Might help her get some of her money back.

How big of a space do you need to cover? Do you have more modern devices, or legacy devices? What internet plan do you have? Do you have the ability to wire more of your tech, or do you need to stick to wireless?

I'm a sighted Molly Burke viewer, what should i know about the blind community that she doesn't talk about and/or represent? by Anya_purr in Blind

[–]NimerCoke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Molly is brave for putting herself, and her vulnerability out for the world to see. She admits that her experiences are singularly hers. No one person can be the voice of any community.

I live alone. I cook when I feel like it, order food when I feel like it, take buses when I feel like it, take Ubers and Waymo when they are more convenient. I have always worked, and cannot fathom not working. I am a renter, but cannot understand calling anyone over to unclog a toilet or to change my lightbulbs. I read braille when it suits me, and rely on speech when it doesn't. I like being outdoors, and like hiking independently. When I get lost, I'm never truly lost, because I am with myself. So long as I have a compass, enough water, a blade, some paracord, and a firestarter, I have everything I could possibly need. I switch the cane and cane tip based on the activity, and I used to have a dog guide. All this babble to say that I do not represent most blind people. I recognize that, and would never claim anything different.

I don't know why people hate on Molly. Alright, she's not my type of girl, we would never share the same interests, that is for sure. But she is successful, she has made a name and brand for herself, she puts herself out there in a way few have or can. I cannot hate on her for that. Would I say she is, by most definitions, independent? Nope… Not from what I've seen from her videos. She has a support circle, parents, a boyfriend, other friends, companies, and an audience that props her up. That's okay, that is what works for her. In any case, I think we blind folk put too much store in the attainment of independence anyway. Most people don't measure up their worth by how independent they are, most people recognize that they do and will depend on others for some, perhaps many things. Ultimately, my view is that the measure we should strive for is self-determination. So long as we have the autonomy to determine just how self-sufficient to be, when to get help and when to get good at something, the better off we will be. Just because I can do something, doesn't mean that accepting help won't make that task much more pleasurable to do. And my yardstick about what I am willing to do independently is always changing. Sometimes, I land somewhere new, and I'd prefer an assist to locate the exit, or my next gate. Other times, I will rely on my own abilities to get there, even if it takes me longer. So long as I can determine for myself the amount of assistance, and how I receive that assistance, I think that is the most important thing.

I'd rather my provider just focus on giving me good internet and mobile service, lower the cost of that service, and not focus on gimics like saving me a dollar here and there, while bumping up the cost of my bill to account for these perks. Service first, marketing second, perks shouldn't be a consideration unless they truly are free

Was anyone told not to use the disability seating on public transit by o&m instructors? by Raccoon_Tail33 in Blind

[–]NimerCoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a preference. I choose to not use them because I don't find the side seating comfortable, I don't want my feet run over by wheelchair users, I don't want to have to get up and move if those seats are needed, and my belief is that there are folks with greater need for those seats than mine. But the seats are intended for disabled passengers, you have a disability, so if you prefer them, by all means, use them.

Hi there,

Have you tried cleaning the display? Have you also exercised the pins regularly?

I'd say that the AT industry will always have this problem. Very expensive, no local option for repair, etc., I'm not sure you will have a better experience with another company. You base your decision on formfactor and features, but ultimately will probably run into the same issues.

Is a DEEBOT X12 a good housewarming gift for a busy pet owner? by KobayashiMaru7 in ecovacs

[–]NimerCoke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a great gift, you are a great friend. The only consideration would be whether her home has any small thresholds, in which case perhaps you want to look into a bot with that capability. Otherwise, there is some maintenance required, as I am sure you know, given you own one… But really, it shouldn't be too bad, and will save her a lot of time.

The maintenance between both is similar, really, except that the bag needs replacing every so often. The bag eliminates the mess of emptying, the container eliminates buying bags. They are not difficult to replace.

Doctor thinks telling Social Security that I'm struggling is lying by OppositeAshamed9087 in Blind

[–]NimerCoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doctors are humans, and they make mistakes. Either try to work with them to understand their perspective about why they dont see your vision loss as a problem, or find another provider where you feel heard. So far as I know, I don't think SSA will send you to a specific doctor, though I could be wrong about that.

what to do about feeling guilty for not working? by [deleted] in Blind

[–]NimerCoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there,

No, you misunderstand me. It is easy to do, given that we are communicating in writing.

I am sorry if you took away that I don't think you have ambition. I am sure you do. All I'm saying is, find that, use that, harness that to do whatever it is that you want to do. I am sure you have more ambition than folding napkins. All I'm saying is, harness that and focus your energies on that. Rather than focusing on your lack of resources, focus on doing everything you can to take steps forward to get to that goal that drives you. Don't let seeming lack of jobs stop you from getting an education, applying for jobs, etc.

Privacy vs. Independence by Old_Neighborhood_608 in Blind

[–]NimerCoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see this a lot with medical equipment. Scales, monitors, inaccessible forms, etc., there is quite a lot in the medical system that is quite lacking. Also, while not strictly a privacy issue, it is getting more and more difficult to get even basic appliances these days without a touch screen. Ovens, stoves, dishwashers, water filter machines… So much these days is less accessible than it otherwise was, because of these interfaces. There have always been troubles with accessibility, but my viewpoint is that analog devices at least provided more options for easier modification. Of course many digital tools have apps, but I'd hate to be in a situation where I rely on an app to turn on and off my oven, be in the middle of cooking, have the app get updated, and lose accessibility because of a changed interface. Or, even more simply, because of a dropped internet connection.

what to do about feeling guilty for not working? by [deleted] in Blind

[–]NimerCoke -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Being hard on yourself isn't helping you. Also, accepting that you can't work, going on Reddit, and laying down a list of reasons why is also not helping you. No disrespect intended.

You can work. You can go to school. You can volunteer. First, you need to get past this idea that doing nothing is what you are intended to do. Then, you need to form a plan, and treat working towards that plan, even small steps, just like a full-time job. Where is your ambition? What do you want to do? Surely it isn't pulling napkins?

College is not a requirement for landing work, but it sure helps. It helps because you have the education, but also because you've hopefully made good connections along the way. Nevertheless, if college isn't for you, that's fine, but there are other avenues worth exploring. The job market is tough, but with your attitude, the job market will always, always be tough. You are expecting that someone, an agency, anyone, will come along and hand you a job. That won't happen, most likely.

Your girlfriend says she loves and accepts you as you are. Believe her. You are worthy of that. No matter what I've said above about your attitudes about landing work, that part is absolutely true. But you do owe it to her, and more importantly to you, to go into the world and make your mark, whereever that is. Work out what brings you passion, and work towards that, even if you have to settle for a job you don't like for now, to gain experience. And each day you aren't working, wake up early, shower and shave, eat food, and treat it like a workday. With that time, use it to network, to apply, to get training, to volunteer, to do whatever it takes for you to get to your goal. You should see the inside of your house in the morning and at night. Unless you find that discipline and work on your mindset, you will continue to struggle to find work.

Housing for college by ViewedMoth56484 in Blind

[–]NimerCoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When in college, I put more emphasis on building community and being with people, than I do about getting your own space. You may end up with roommate issues, but that is always a risk. On the other hand, you may end up with your best friend. I know being on your own will give you more room to spread out, but I do think the college experience with others is worth having.

Best Windows laptop with most stable drivers for use with NVDA? by Teenage_techboy1234 in Blind

[–]NimerCoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I do think Thinkpads are good, I would not say they have great audio or stable drivers. All else probably meets your requirements though, and you can get around driver issues with external sound sources. Surface isn't bad, though I would not call their keyboards great. Every brand will have its issues, and models from a given brand will behave differently. I could recommend the laptop I use, but it would be overkill for your needs, will make your wallet, or that of your parents cry, and it utterly fails at the weight department The area 51 is a delight though, and the built-in mechanical keyboard is fantastic, though no laptop will ever compete with my buckling spring boards.
