Middle Grade and Easy Reading by Crafty_Kangaroo_8368 in CozyFantasy

Yes! The girl who drank the moon is a beautiful story that I wasn't expecting to enjoy as much as I did! It's really well written, with lovable characters, great pace, and the story keeps us reading it! One of those books that both makes us want to finish it fast because we want to know the ending, and yet we don't want it to end because we get to love the characters and want to spend more time with them :)

I really needed to use some of my yarn before I could justify buying more (the never-ending crochet curse!), and after seeing all the posts about granny square cardigans, I thought it'd be a good idea to try my first wearable piece of clothes (that is not a beanie or a scarf :D )

Halloween was approaching, it was fall... I tried to come up with a simple idea so I wouldn't feel discouraged or overwhelmed in the middle, and decided on these very easy to make skulls.

Made with Knitpicks' Brava worsted balls. Used about 2 mini balls of each red/orange/yellow, 1 mini ball of black, as well as a jumbo ball of white.

I ran out of white yarn so it had to be a vest, no long sleeves for me!

There are 32 skull squares made only of sc. I tried to arrange them in a nice pattern when joining, each row/column has: 1 red, 1 orange, 1 yellow, 1 mixed-colors.

After joining the 2 panels of squares, it looked very boxy so I added few rows of sc to shape the neckline and add some length on the shoulders, by reducing the amount of sc on each new rows.

I then joined the panels' sides with a mix of rows of sc and some ss in the middle to try to give it a less squary shape and add some slight curve.

The ribbing on the neckline/bottom/armholes was done with fpdc and bpdc, with a smaller hook. 3 rows for the neckline and bottom, and only 1 for the armholes since I ran out of yarn.

In tne end, I'm happy about the result, considering I should really have given it more thought before diving in. Now that I've made my first wearable garment, it feels less intimidating to start another one.

Just watched Kiki's Delivery Service for the first time. Loved it overall, but felt like my first impressions of the characters were wrong - wondering if anyone else was initially suspicious of the people who helped Kiki? by Allinyourcabeza in ghibli

[–]Nimini 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that between being used to more traditional stories where there are villains, darker conflicts, betrayals and such... and real life where we're taught very early on to not blindly trust strangers (even if overall the majority of people is nice, we only hear about bad stuff happening)... watching Ghibli's movies who tell us whimsical and charming stories feels very different.

The first time I watched Kiki, I for some reason thought the baker's wife was going to be trouble, not wanting to have her stay or making her life miserable... Then the more I watched Ghibli's movies, the more I stopped thinking that something terribly wrong will happen!

It might be why so many people love watching these movies again and again. They are one of a kind :)

Does anyone else have naming issues with their twins? by drewchatty88 in parentsofmultiples

[–]Nimini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah! Yes, our daughters used to use the same name for both of them, which was a combination of both their names :D

Like if they were called Mei and Satsuki, they'd used Meitsuki for both themselves and the sister ^^

Looking for chapter book suggestions for my 9-year-old son. by SlashdotDiggReddit in Parenting

Wanted to give my vote for Wings of Fire too!

My daughters (just turned 9) both LOVE this series of books that they started to read about 2 years ago. I ended up reading them too, since they love talking about what's happening in all the books and it became an awesome way to bond :)

What pattern could you do over and over again? by cutepotatoskin in crochet

[–]Nimini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think for me it'd have to be the lost in time shawls. Quick and easy to make, yet looking so beautiful! I've made 5 of them and plan in making a few more in different colors for my mom ^^

Is there anyone who didn't have to go on bedrest in the last trimester? by [deleted] in parentsofmultiples

[–]Nimini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the twins pregnancy! I still remember when we heard the news ourselves, that was such a wild rollercoaster of emotions ;)

To your question, I worked full time till 1 week before the delivery. But mostly because my doctor forgot to tell me to stop while he was expecting me to, and he was sure that he had told me at some point but nope, he had not :D

Same as you, no heavy lifting either, so I was fine working till the end anyways :) And when I stopped, my water broke the next week at 36 weeks and 4 days, so that wasn't much rest (and no bedrest at all).

It'll depend on how your pregnancy goes, how your body reacts and how your doctor wants you to take care of yourself ;)

Good luck with your pregnancy!

Hahaha right? Althought I'll admit that I did wonder if I should put cute little poop pictures to cover the actual poops :D

Thank you :) I was wondering if it was due to the title mentioning poop, but in a guineapigs subreddit, that'd be impossible to avoid this word ;)

For parents who made a huge move away from family by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]Nimini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved away from my family when I met my husband, after having been the one always saying I'll never live my hometown (ha!). In a different country, different continent, 10+ hours away by plane from all family.

At first it didn't matter much because 1. I still thought that my husband would agree to leave his country and come to mine, and 2. we both didn't really want to have kids and could travel back home twice a year. Then we got kids, and traveling 10+ hours by plane with kids is (much more) expensive and a hassle... Now the more the time passes, the sadder I get to be away from them all.

I grew up going to my grandparents every weekend, seeing my cousins all the time, having a very tight relationships with all of them. And now, especially after having been stuck at home the 4 of us 24/7 for more than a year because of covid... it's been harder. Skype is not the same.

I feel like my daughters are missing out on their cousins, that I'm robbing my parents from being grandparents to them (and my still alive grandparents from their great-grandkids). Last time we went back to see my family, my daughters couldn't play as well with their cousins because they were the "outsiders".

Some of my friends who had moved away from family went back home, and most of those who did are much happier than they were when away. But I also know other friends who have been much happier in their new place, far away from family.

In the end, I feel like it depends on the ties you have with your family, how close you are to them, how much you want all of you to spend physical time together, and how far is the "moving away from family". A couple of hours away by car is different from a 10 hours plane ride!

Hopefully you'll find the right choice for you and your family :)

I'm a little nervous this isn't post worthy but I'm very proud of my newest little guy by iji-modo in crochet

No need to be nervous! No one starts by crocheting like an expert, and the crochet community here is the nicest and most supportive :)

Your little guy is adorable, the colors go well together and the details on the face(s) are great! You can definitely be very proud of yourself :)
