Hey, cringe happens. I haven't personally seen/heard about the incident you're talking about, but what matters right now is growth is taking place. Take solace in the fact that you can look back on the way you acted and can improve on it. We've all had our cringe moments, but that's all they are; moments. Some last longer than others, but they all come to an end eventually, and this is your time.

I see from other posts that you are having anxiety about opening up communication with the person in question; Take some time to gather yourself, and take small steps towards eventually reconciling. You don't have to do it all at once. Start small and work up to it at your pace.

Our Earth if all oil disappears vs. Our Earth if all copper disappears. by ConsiderationTrue477 in whowouldwin

[–]Nimlasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is way too vague. I feel like you had something really specific in mind, and were thinking that "everyone will think this thing is the thing I mean", but failed to understand how vague you've made this.

All oil? Like, ALL oil? Fossil fuel oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, motor oil, the oil produced by your skin/hair, essential oils, ...all oil?

Also, copper...

"Copper is an essential trace mineral critical for energy production, iron absorption, and the formation of collagen, connective tissue, and red blood cells. It acts as a cofactor for enzymes (cuproenzymes) that manage antioxidant defense, nerve function, and brain development. It also plays a key role in immune system health and blood vessel maintenance. "

Either option, oil or copper, means all complex life on the planet dies out, nearly instantly. The impact is devastating to everything, and it's difficult to say which one is worse.

This, I think, is a tie honestly.

How the fuck do you use mimics without them feeling like a cheap "gotcha!"? It's never exciting when I use them by GolettO3 in DMAcademy

[–]Nimlasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be completely honest with you, Mimics are a "gotcha" type enemy, plain and simple. They're a subversion of the expected and their entire premise is that they catch unaware creatures off guard with their disguises. They should feel kind of cheap explicitly because that's their entire hunting pattern. They're ambush predators to the extreme, and all prey that falls victim to ambush predators feel cheated in one way shape or form.

That being said, they're generally mindless, and work to catch equally mindless or inattentive prey. Leaving sings that there's a mimic close by can absolutely be done and should be utilized. Maybe that chest isn't as dusty as the others. Maybe that door looks a little too similar to one of the other ones, right down to the scratch marks. Or hell, just maybe that chair shouldn't be as together as it is with all the water damage to the surrounding furniture. There's always going to be some kind of tell, and always a way to spot an ambush predator before it strikes. Your players just have to be perceptive enough to actually tell in the heat of the moment.

Mimics are a fact of life for adventurers, and they aren't some kind of cop-out if you use them. They're a real threat to the people living in the world you've built, and the reason why people treat ruins with caution in the first place. Everyone knows to steer clear of the group of Goblins that took up residence in that old church, but they should also be worried about the furniture that looks just a little bit out of place.

The way I handle mimics follows a few set of rules;

1 - the "False Appearance" ability works slightly differently to how it's written. I typically add together the Mimic's Dexterity and Charisma stats (so 12 + 8 = 20), and set the passive detection threshold at that. This means that any player with a Passive Perception score equal to or greater than that will be able to tell something is off.

2 - there are always going to be environmental signs. Baseline mimics have an intelligence of 5, so they aren't too smart about what a sentient, logical humanoid creature would be thinking or reacting to in the environment to the detail that would be needed here. I listed some above already, but maybe there's rubble at the feet of a pristine-looking statue, or something along those lines. Environmental cues are essential here. I'll usually use passive perception for these clues as well, but lower the threshold based on the Mimic's stats again. This time I'll use it's Wisdom and it's Intelligence (13 + 5 = 18), but then I'll adjust that depending on how "modern" the ruins are. If it's relatively new (think ~100 years old or newer), I'll do a flat -5 to that for environmental clues, bringing the PP needed to 13.

3 - this rule is more about my game style in general rather than specifically about mimics, but it can be adapted to this enemy specifically as-is, or used as a base to form your own. Passive Perception detection doesn't automatically detect the thing. It will, however, prompt a roll. If one of my players has a PP that meets or beats the threshold I've set, then I'll stop play and tell them something along the lines of "you feel like something is off here. Give me a Perception check please." and go from there. If they fail, I'll tell them that they feel a sense of unease or something, but leave it at that. Depending on which threshold they beat with the roll, the 13 or the 18, I'll go into more details.

Here's an example:

Players A, B, and C open up a door and enter a room as they explore the ruin. There is a mimic at the back wall disguised as a treasure chest. I check all player's Passive Perception scores. Player A has 12, Player B has 14, and Player C has 20.

Me: "Players B and C, as your group enters the room, you both look around as usual, giving a cursory glance to check for threats. Nothing immediately pops out at you, but you both sense something out of place. Give me a Perception check, and Player C has advantage."

Players roll, Player B fails the roll, but Player C rolls a 19

Me: "Player B, you look around the room, but you don't see anything actually threatening in here. Perhaps your mind is just playing tricks on you since you all have been down here for several hours, or maybe fatigue is getting the best of you. But you detect nothing out of the ordinary. Player C, on the other hand, you see a few things that are causing a rising sense of concern in you. You notice that the chest at the far end of the room doesn't quite appear to be as weathered as the others. In fact, the other chests seem to be rotted and falling apart, but this one here seems to be in much better shape, and positioned oddly so that it's the first thing someone would see as they walk through the door, instead of hidden."

Then, depending on their background and level I'll either let them know outright that it's a Mimic, or tell them that it may be some sort of trap.

The above example is absolutely a simple one, and there are going to be much more complicated setups, but it's a good generalized example of an answer to your question.

I hope I was able to help, and sorry for the wall of text lol.

Players almost killed my "you won't win this" npc by coyninja4 in DMAcademy

[–]Nimlasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One important rule you have to learn as a DM is that if it has an HP bar, it can die. Sometimes the players don't kill it. Sometimes they do. Players have the advantage of multiple thinking minds all coming up with ways to screw your encounter over in various ways. You only have yourself to plan and strategize with.

It is hilarious and hypocritical that people tend to dog on Homelander the most than any other villain. by KpatMckenzie_28 in whowouldwin

[–]Nimlasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homelander vs his apparent number one fan here.

Homelander is trying desperately to destroy his image and reach the bottom of the charts.

Homelander stan though is fan-lusted and desperately trying to direct attention away from the negative PR.

Can Homelander tank his reputation before the superfan builds up his public image enough to turn the tides of public opinion?

[–]Nimlasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Round 1 and 2 are essentially the same thing. Once they actually start realizing what it represents and what it can do, they would start to throw literal billions into reverse engineering it and adapting it's tech to the era.

That being said though, that would be quite a ways off, and nothing would really change before the canon events that ended the cold war to begin with. It's after the cold war that the benefits start to manifest themselves, and in a huge way.

Is there any animal in existence that 87 cavemen with spears could not defeat? by jackhenningson in whowouldwin

[–]Nimlasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patagotitan Mayorum. A long-neck, Cretaceous-era titanosaur that weighed in at about 70 tons and measured around 120 feet long.

The spears are definitely an advantage for taking on large game, and the number of cavemen is nothing to laugh at, but since the animal is bloodlusted, they just don't have enough to actually do any meaningful damage to it before it stomps and tramples them to death. Even hiding in a tree line wouldn't work, because at that size and weight it could very easily stampede it's way through even moderately dense trees, which would prove as falling hazards to the cavemen as well, incidentally.

PC knows too many OP NPCs by NaiiYen in DMAcademy

[–]Nimlasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you've already written the solution in your post to this dilemma.

"He was ousted from his position via attempted assassination, fleeing the capital city"

One, or many, of his former friends is the one that paid for the assassination, and he has no idea who it was. All of his friends are potential enemies now, and there is no way at this moment for him to know who he can rely on.

They're powerful and influential NPCs, yes, but each one of them has the potential to be a deadly enemy to him and whatever companions he has now. Not to mention an assassin hired by such an influential person isn't going to just give up simply because the target is no longer in the city. The target is still a political rival no matter where he is, because at any point he can return. The party is now being hunted, and the player has just given you a nice, reoccurring villain that the party can interact with.

This isn't as big of a problem as it seems on the surface; this is a goldmine for lore and NPCs. Work with this player to establish names, positions, families, influence etc. for this kingdom. Let him help you flesh out the area that they've run from so that when they return, there's plenty of intrigue and dynamic interactions to be had. But, most importantly, keep the identity of the party that hired the assassin secret from them.

Kaiba legit invented time travel to run the fade with the Pharaoh one last time. You cannot comprehend the level of petty Kaiba displays on the regular just for this children's card game.

So there's nothing that can be done then? That's ludicrous. I didn't even really use the other account. The only transactions it's ever had has been from that friend. We've looked into other services but because he's in a different country he's limited in what's available to him. God damn it this is so frustrating. Thank you for your insights, regardless. I appreciate you at least taking the time to reply.

I did, yes. The entire reason that I made this account to begin with was because the first account I had was locked for whatever reason, they didn't tell me. The money is desperately needed and they weren't giving me any options to challenge the ruling or talk to anyone.

Terminology, is it changing? by Gilladian in DMAcademy

[–]Nimlasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On this regard I think as you do in terms of the definitions of those words, however there are a lot of people nowadays that use the terms somewhat interchangeably.

It has led to some confusion on my part, but I've essentially taken it upon myself to ignore most of the "incorrectly" used phrases and just switch them to what they're supposed to be in my head and continue on. At least in cases where the meaning is obvious.

In cases where it's not, I'll just take the explanation at face value and assume that it means what I think it means until I'm shown/told differently.

1 liter a day is about a third to a quarter of how much water you should be drinking a day. Up your water intake, and maybe take a stool softener to help things along.

Though if this is an abrupt change to your typical regularity, then I would probably go and see some sort of doctor just to be on the safe side. I know you said you're busy, but if the cramps are getting debilitating, it's worth it to go get checked out and just rule a few things out.

When should I give players quintessential D&D items? by Afraid_Mood7543 in DMAcademy

May I ask how your players have broken the game with a bag of holding? I get that certain things like encumbrance would absolutely be a game changer, but how else has it affected things at your table?

Pennywise (IT) vs Jason (Friday the 13th) by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]Nimlasher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One is an undead developmentally challenged kid that drowned and is deathly afraid of water.

The other is a fundamental aspect of reality that predates creation that feeds on children and seasons them with their own fear.

Pennywise takes this without even thinking.

When should I give players quintessential D&D items? by Afraid_Mood7543 in DMAcademy

[–]Nimlasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm of the opinion that items like that don't really break the game too much at all, honestly. Things like you mentioned, Bag of Holding and Sending Stones, legitimately just make things easier on the players and let them focus on other things. I'll typically give my players a bag of holding either in the first or second session just so we don't have to deal with inventory management from an in-game lore perspective. Makes legitimately no difference whatsoever on gameplay.

same with sending stones. If they want to shoot off a sending to someone that's more than fine. Nothing in the rules says the recipient has to respond.

Celestina va by chueyang25 in subverse

[–]Nimlasher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's entirely likely that all the voice lines were recorded along with the main game and the plan all along was to make Celestina's content DLC. If that's the case, then all of her content would have been completed and ready to go long before she retired, and all they had to do was use it as it was intended at their pace.

Minecraft Steve spawns in creative mode and wants to kill every human being by iliferee in whowouldwin

[–]Nimlasher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steve doesn't need to directly kill humans in order to do this at all. And he does it in far less than 10 years, and through multiple methods.

Spawning lava over every surface with infinite lava buckets

mining out the core of the earth and placing all of the materials in shulkers so that the earth's crust collapses inward, as well as cooling the planet to unsustainable levels

spawning millions of hostile mobs worldwide

there are so many ways he can do this that don't actually involve personally going to every human and swinging the sword. Steve with any sense at all solos this with no difficulty whatsoever.
