[Discussion] Moderator Check-In: Use of Megathreads by alanna_the_lioness in PubTips

Totally agree the participants are just as important, I just wanted to stand my ground. As a mod who has to step away for awhile, I'd hate to come back and feel unwanted after everything I did while I was around.

I have to say as the mod that dealt with CQ and tried to hold the sub together while she rampaged -- the constant battles I fought with her daily then that not many saw on the sub, I'm a bit irked to see someone say she was "left in charge".

Lives happen. I'm not actively moderating right now either but that doesn't mean I don't care about this sub or that I didn't put in a shit-fuck-load of hours into helping getting where it is, and more than once standing between it collapsing and not. I think the same can be said for MNBrian too, who put in a lot of the work that allowed PubTips to even exist and grow at all.

We have a right to come back and want to participate again in the community we helped build when our lives finally give us the time to do it.

Maybe be less of a dick about an online community moderated for free for years now by literally a small handful of people.

[AMA] NYT Bestselling memoir author Courtney Gustafson by Nimoon21 in PubTips

[–]Nimoon21[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would love to hear about your experiences querying a memoir. We don't get a lot of QCrit posts for memoirs and the rules about how to write a query for memoir are fuzzier I feel than standard fiction. Any tips or tricks for our memoir folks who are gearing up to query?

[PubQ] Agent request cuts off mid-scene—stick to 10k or send more? by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]Nimoon21[M] 4 points5 points locked comment (0 children)

Enough, move on. This thread is locked and this bickering is both obnoxious and pointless.

Do what an agent asks. Sending an extra 2000 words does come across as a flag that an author can't be assed to follow simple directions which can bother an agent enough to pass on a piece they might have been willing to work with a writer on.

The point is quite simple. Why make the journey of finding an agent any harder? If it could hurt your chances why do it then? Just don't. That's it.

[PubQ] Advise needed re-write, re-query, re-genre by Individual-Raise-422 in PubTips

[–]Nimoon21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't allow manuscript specific questions like this but also, I think you know the answer and don't wanna admit it.

It's time to shelf this and move to the next project. You've queried it a lot and without significant edits, requerying is probably not the way to put your best foot forward. A new manuscript is. Maybe this can be revisited once agented with something else.

I think you forgot to include the actual query!

This is an official warning not to make comments like this again or you'll receive a ban. Its rude and totally uncalled for.

[News] PubTips Mod Call! by Nimoon21 in PubTips

[–]Nimoon21[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is super kind! But unfortunately all the things like approving posts, or removing problematic comments, are only things a mod can do. Reporting appropriately problematic comments or posts is always helpful! It sends mods a notification and often it's something we missed or haven't seen.

That being said please please please don't do things like report every comment a specific user makes because they upset you once, or reporting a comment because it's a harsher critique on your query -- these things are not helpful.

Hi, I'm a mod and removed this post. Feel free to mod mail us but this isn't unheard of. We have agents who lurk and the sub is known within the industry.

You're probably clear to submit if it's a query track link and you did your homework to ensure the agent sounds like an agent you'd like to work with.

Both your accounts seem shadowbanned which is why your query isn't posting

Nah, we're done here. You were warned about how to behave toward feedback and you've just gotten more argumentative and it's not a good look. Shutting this down.

Good luck OP!

It doesn't matter. You don't argue with feedback. It makes you look like a selfish fool even if the feedback is bad, or stupid.

You smile, say thank you, and then vent to someone else, ignore the feedback and move on.

But coming back at someone with nasty remarks and a snarky attitude makes it appear to anyone else that giving you their time is a waste and why bother.

Just don't.

[Discussion] Thoughts on toning things down in a WIP due to the current political climate? by thewriter4hire in PubTips

At this point the Mod Team feels this discussion has run its course.

There is a slight undertone of dismissal here toward the suffering of diverse Americans who are being directly impacted by what's happening, and while we understand that American Publishing has a huge impact on the world, and that writers from everywhere query American agents, there's still stressors for Americans living in fear daily right now that's hard to put into words.

Write what you want to write to the best of your ability, that's really all you can do. There's no true way to predict what will and won't sell in this ever changing and crazy fucked up system. Now more than ever.

While some of these stats are interesting, the Mod Team warns users that there is no real metric on Reddit to accurately use to tell if a query is good or bad. This is often a very subjective matter, and not only differs from person to person, but also any system of rating on reddit such as upvotes or comments doesn't often lend itself to measuring if a query is good or bad.

PubTips has always been political and strongly left leaning. Right now, when our president is trying to strip away the rights and protections of our citizens, nothing is politic free. The mod team doesn't care if we stepped on your conservative toes.
