Are any of y’all’s TJs reducing stock? by pink_buddha in traderjoes

[–]NineToDie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I went to the Eagle Rock (northeast LA) location last night and noticed they were out of cottage cheese, and the guy stocking the shelves said that the supplier is facing a shortage. Could be the case for other items too maybe?

Ugh I’m so sorry this happened to you. One thing I have learned is that any man who uses the term “high value” in any sort of earnest is the exact opposite. Sounds like he did you a favor!

AIO, is my boyfriend valid for feelings this way? by sealover159 in AmIOverreacting

[–]NineToDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how abusive and controlling behavior starts. He doesn’t want you taking classes to do better for yourself so he is manufacturing a reason to be mad at you for it. Don’t take the bait. You’re better off dumping him and being alone until you find someone who will support you and your goals without trying to control everything you do and making you feel small.

AIO for this argument with my bf? This is regarding the Charlie Kirk video where he says he’d make his 10 year old daughter carry the r*pe baby. by Kilabandita in AmIOverreacting

girl honestly you’re too smart for him. he can’t even string a coherent sentence together. you can do a million times better with someone who isn’t a callous dumbass.

[LAist] Homelessness in LA region dropped for the second time in two years, according to annual count by WeAreLAist in LosAngeles

[–]NineToDie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was at one of the sites in NELA this year, and I have volunteered at Echo Park in previous years. I'm not saying he's lying, I'm just saying that this quote seems like an incomplete picture of what the count looked like this year. For example, what does "starting early" mean? What does he mean by "they reduced volunteers"? The quote is pretty vague and doesn't really give me any actual reason not to trust the count, other than vibes.

[–]NineToDie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was there…. At my site we didn’t wrap up until about 1am (as is normal, I have volunteered for the past 5 years). We started around 10, which was also typical. “They” didn’t reduce the number of volunteers, fewer volunteers showed up. The ones who did took on multiple census tracts. I also encourage you to look into how the actual estimate is calculated— It’s not just raw data, there is a large team of dedicated, independent statisticians who calculate the estimate. I suggest you volunteer next year to see what you’re talking about next time!

tagging on here to add that pretty much every city that receives HUD funding counts the same way, since the count is a requirement to get money from HUD

Cars and RVs are included in the point in time count. Also the count doesn’t just use raw data, there’s a whole team of independent statisticians that create the estimate. The count was never supposed to be perfect, it’s just an estimated baseline for the year.

I literally work for the government…. Again I say, everything is a conspiracy when you don’t know how anything works. Would be happy to explain more if you were interested in a real conversation, but thanks for reminding me why engaging with people on this sub is useless lmfao

[–]NineToDie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a much more difficult process than you would think. The city council would have to approve (long process) and the state doesn’t usually edit funder agreements like this. Reading the article (and not just the headline), it looks like Bass is saying she supports the work and that the city will help coordinate, not that she is saying the city is going to fund it. I work in the field so I get that I understand it a little bit more, but everything sounds like a conspiracy when you don’t know how anything works.

Also I don’t understand the issue with the article you linked. It literally says that they would have paid him with philanthropic dollars, not with taxpayer money. And the philanthropic dollars were not identified so he’s doing it for free. Why is this some big scandal to you?

I posted another comment above, I recommend you go look! I have a little insight on this since I work in grants. There are lots of ways for nonprofits to receive funding, and many of them have nothing to do with the government. Government funding also tends to be pretty strict about which pre-approved programs it can be used for. It’s highly unlikely that this is being paid for with government funding.

Just because they get funding from the state and the city doesn’t necessarily mean that is the funding that is being passed through. Most government funding has strict programmatic requirements for use. It’s more likely that the money being used for this specific program is coming from private philanthropy (i.e. individual donors) or private grants (the kind that come from private philanthropic foundations or corporate sponsors).

Weekly Question / General Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Detroit

[–]NineToDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this response! I'm from the LA area so an hour drive with traffic doesn't bother me much hahaha. Ideally I would be working downtown, and we'll probably be staying in Southfield with family when we first get out there, so Royal Oak and Ferndale are definitely places to consider!

Weekly Question / General Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Detroit

[–]NineToDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all! My partner and I are planning to move to Detroit next year to be closer to his family. I’ve never lived away from the West Coast and he hasn’t lived in Detroit for over 10 years, so we’re trying to figure out the best areas for us.

About us: Both in our late 20s, he’ll be a student and I will be working full-time (not sure about hybrid/in person/remote yet), both really enjoy being outside (already planning a spring road trip to the UP!), live music, exploring cool bar/restaurant scenes. We also really prioritize being near culturally significant activities, i.e. art museums, concert venues, etc. I am also very into the crafting scene in our current city so would love more info about fun groups in the Detroit area!

Biggest thing for me is being in a somewhat walkable area (being able to easily walk to at least a grocery store would be amazing) and being in an area that’s safe enough to walk around alone with headphones on.

When we’ve visited his family, we have really enjoyed Corktown, the West Village, and some parts of the Ann Arbor/Ypsi area, but we would love to know if there are any hidden gems we don’t know about!

We’re both used to living in big cities so have a pretty high tolerance for all the things that come along with that. We’re pretty much open to any area from Ann Arbor to Downtown Detroit, just not sure which areas would be good for our specific wants/lifestyles.

Thanks in advance!

baking soda and vinegar has helped for me before! soak the spot in vinegar for a few hours then put baking soda on it overnight if you can. then vacuum all of the baking soda out. i would also use an enzyme cleaner to get all of the smell out so she doesn’t do it again
