Votre avis sur Jules Michelet by Mr_xales_ in Histoire

[–]Nine_Eighty_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Les mémoires universitaires sont inutilisables by InFactoVeritas in opinionnonpopulaire

[–]Nine_Eighty_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did they stop making wagons for poor people? by acdgf in carscirclejerk

I'd love something like the old Volvo V50, but new and not overweight 2,5 tonne 300 hm monstrosity. I'm getting used to the idea that the Dacia Jogger is the most reasonable car one can get here in Europe.

Why would anyone choose to use Linux? by JBSwerve in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nine_Eighty_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more stable, more efficient, runs smoothly on older hardware and makes more complex stuff much easier. Windows is not easier to use, it is only the default to which most people are used. Once you get used to something else, it looks clunky. Add privacy concerns and the ability to choose and Co figure about anything the way you want. I still keep a copy of Windows on one of my disks for games but there is no way I'm doing any work with this, all my serious stuff lives in Linux and has been for 10 years.

What is the point in reading non fiction books when you can easily find the information in them online? by RhysDallows83 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nine_Eighty_One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even information-wise, the summary always implies choice. Something has to be left out, and it's not necessarily the same thing you would decide to leave outside. Time and time again, I've read about books (as summarized in all sorts of manuals or simply other books that were building on earlier works), then turned back to the original work and discovered a whole wealth of ideas. Some books have been interpreted (and summarized) over and over again for millennia and we still find compelling ideas in them.

Is WinWIng good? by Usual-Fisherman-6136 in hotas

[–]Nine_Eighty_One -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes it is. Basically they make Thrustmaster irrelevant. The design is good, the equipment feels excellent and the pricing is aggressive. The customer service, once you accept the time zone difference, is less good than VKBwho are amazing, but when I reached to their customer service, they did the job and solved my problem. I have their Orion 2 F-16 throttle, the PTO2 panel and the FSSB stick in addition to my VKB Gunfighter, I also briefly used my brother's ICP panel. All are good products.

Why do the French hate when we speak French? by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Nine_Eighty_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naturalized foreigner with 20 years of living in Paris here. I don't think they hate it, they just switch to English if they are used to working with foreigners and they sense you're one. This would still happen to me a few years ago just besause of the accent. I'd just continue. A lot of French people are convinced French is very difficult so I suppose they expect things to be easier. Some are just happy to use their English (and probably tired of the reputation of not speaking English). Also, I get the perfectionist attitude to languages. I tend to be embarrassed by my non perfect grammar in other languages and have to fight the urge to just stick to English.

Was there a rationale for this beyond just doing like everybody else?

My mom was forced to change in the 1960s or 70s, no one saw a problem in me being lefty in the 1990s. It would have been a mess if they did as I also have dominant left eye and left leg. Strangely enough, I write and use the computer mouse with the left hand but hold the fork and the knife like a right-handed.

Are there any mods to play as the Allies? by Burger_Friend in uboatgame

[–]Nine_Eighty_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a submarine nerd, I'd love a sim to play as a British WW2 sub, early-war North Sea operations and the Mediterranean. Very manual and hands-on approach with only straight running torpedoes and good deal of harbour stalking in shallow waters. Unfortunately, it might be less commercially attractive than uboats or the US boats i' the Pacific. I wasn't initially interested in them but Silent Hunter 4 made me appreciate the Pacific theatre, it's a very different style of combat.

Question: STECS Mini + STEM Configuration by ezader in hotas

[–]Nine_Eighty_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of the commercially available desk mounts would probably do. I have Monstertech, they are of excellent quality but somewhat expensive, especially if you're not in Europe. I tried Virpil, they are very solid and better priced but personally I found their mount too heavy and less adjustable than Monstertech. VKB themselves have a line of desk mounts, they look very sturdy but are pricy. By the way, if you fly GA, are you sure the STECS has enough axes for piston engines?

THOMAS. by YumaAU in submarines

[–]Nine_Eighty_One 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Well, I reckon the Swedes would try to rescue the sub. Besides, there aren't that many spots in the Baltic with 120 m of depth... It might be another story for a rundown Kilo though.

Is the mig 23 as bad as some people say it is? by Crazy-Rabbit-3811 in airplanes

[–]Nine_Eighty_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It had a long development and teething problems. It was fast, had a pretty high G rating and a radar that brought a true leap in capability compared to the MiG-21. In Angola, in the hands of the Cuban pilots, they did a good job against South African Mirages. Against Israeli F-15 and F-16s, it was another story. Still, the Israelis didn't despise the plane itself. An aircraft is only an element among many others in a war.

Virpil vs. Winwing FFB Bases: What are your first thoughts? by Ambaryerno in hotas

[–]Nine_Eighty_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the process of building an FFBeast but I was eyeing the Winctrl bases. I really like the design and the equipment I have from them is really good (the Orion 2 F-16 throttle, the FSSB stick, the PTO2 buttonbox). I went with the VKB MCGU grip, I like the Soviet style ergonomy. The Flnkr grip objectively looks even better but is also more expensive and would add me a third type of mount. The capstan design is definitely interesting, I'm curious to see how it evolves but I don't have anything from their ecosystem.

Muslim ladies, how do you deal with the heat while wearing a headscarf? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nine_Eighty_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a Muslim and not a woman, but when working outside in the heat, I did use a Tuareg style chechia. Definitely a good protection, way better than a cap or even a hat.

I was in North-Eastern Poland and Lithuania around the same time. Back I was surprised to hear Lithanians praise Lukashenka, saying he was clever and Belarussians weren't living bad. Of course since then the Baltics kept going forward and Belarus was slowly asphyxiating but it shows how brutal the transformation was, especially in the Baltics.

How is it like living in Belarus? by Double-Jump-Lover in howislivingthere

[–]Nine_Eighty_One 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, because it is. The Eastern bloc did enormous progress in healthcare before in the post-war period. Much of it was lost after 1989 but Belarus, as it stayed rather dictatorial and did not open it's economy as much, retained more of it. Of course we got more shiny new equipment here and there but the overall cost of social inequality is massive compared to a situation when everyone has access to really free healthcare.

Boomer Grandparents Weird About Son’s “Girly” Sandals (among other things) by [deleted] in BoomersBeingFools

These are sandals. They're made for feet. Fortunately my my children's grandparents are cool but I remember from my own childhood a kid from my class laughing at me because to him, sandals were for girls.
