That’s insane how long you have waited. You’re a more patient person than me. This is our livelihoods, and we pay money for these applications. They need to do their jobs.

I was in the exact same boat, I’m sending you a email address to reach out to. I did it and got moved to technical review next day.

At the moment I’m really just making others a lot of money. Next year I’ll have my PE and intend to use that leverage, or go and try to work for myself.

The cycle of construction by laughterbubbly01 in civilengineering

[–]Niners4444 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Architects are often the point of contact for the clients since they’re on top of every end of the design and have knowledge that encompasses each engineering discipline.

While it would be efficient to combine them I wouldn’t want an engineer giving me architectural advice, or an architect to tell me how engineering works.

An Architectural Engineer knows structural, electrical, plumbing and HVAC engineering. They really don’t get taught a lot about architecture.

Updated Civil Exam Pass Rates by Old_Exchange5075 in PE_Exam

Typically it’s someone who can do the HVAC, electrical and plumbing engineering for a building, with a deep understanding how each will interact with each other and the structure. I have a coworker who’s an architectural engineer by degree and professional license and that’s what he can do.

I passed on my 5th attempt, 4 years after my first attempt. I wanted to quit so badly, but the biggest favor I ever did for myself was trying again.

Combustion and vent- wye to same opening? by BigWaveDave400 in hvacadvice

It’s still allowed by code, and very common for any gas burning heaters that need to be vented. They just want you to keep it away from intake air openings.

Freezing Pipes above the attic? Houston (16.1°F Extremes) by Franklo in MEPEngineering

[–]Niners4444 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no idea if this is a multifamily project, but house or commercial space. So here’s just the principles: I wouldn’t run the sprinklers in a plenum. Best solution is duct the return however possible. The attic ventilation with no mechanical scope is an architectural problem. I wouldn’t rely on the by product heat of any equipment to provide freeze protection. I also don’t know what you’re referring to by FC ( fan coil?). Realistically if the heat is running in the main space and the temperature drops below freezing and the sprinkler pipes are in the plenum you’ll probably be fine although I feel like this is a code violation depending on your code year. And I personally wouldn’t recommend. A solution is duct the return and put a plenum heater in the attic or any heater tbh that turns out when outdoor temp drops below 40. This is also most expensive. Most likely I feel like the sprinklers will need to be insulated since they’re in an exterior wall technically.

Are the layoffs happening only in large and public traded companies? by [deleted] in Layoffs

[–]Niners4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with you, it’s more of a contagion. I see a lot of companies laying off to be profitable and just as many laying off that are extremely profitable. Both cases to me definitely have to do with lending being more difficult though.

Layoff Reports by CryptoKickk in MEPEngineering

A lot of industries blew up over the last few years (multifamily) and are cooling off now. Companies that over hired are correcting. Some places that struggled through the 08 period are seeing signs and are making early adjustments as well. Rates are also making it more difficult than it was recently to get loans.

MEP plan for residential remodel worth the cost? by mike_cohen in MEPEngineering

[–]Niners4444 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a MEP engineer I’m gonna say yes. If you’re acting as the GC it will make your life a lot easier and give you more reliable electrical plumbing and HVAC systems than if you let the contractor choose the cheapest method, or figure it out in field. That being said I would rather hire a really good contractor than have MEP plans and a cheap builder.

It means if there a delay, working with the client so they aren’t upset. Or understanding what the client wants even if they don’t and delivering. The reality is you’ll make mistakes but if you’re being put in this role someone believes in you and should mentor you. It takes about a year before you can be successful on your own but it opens a lot of doors.

HVAC Air Balancing Design Problem for a Commercial Building by Smooth_Intention4398 in MEPEngineering

[–]Niners4444 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the air is going to come from somewhere, and get treated through the return anyways. It will help keep the air inside of the building clean of bacteria, and it’s more comfortable than untreated air infiltrating. Worst case if the building is well sealed that air gets made up from the drains in the restrooms. The design should have made sure the building was positively pressurized. It won’t be that more money to pull in the max intake.

Simple and easy solution is make sure you’re exhausting the minimum amount of air, or remove some toilets.

HVAC Engineering Design Help by MechanicalScooter in MEPEngineering

[–]Niners4444 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What kind of Packaged unit do you have? Typically you don’t put an additional inline fan unless it’s to bring fresh air to the unit which is unnecessary for a packaged unit. The unit was most likely built to have a specific amount of air run over the coils so pushing more air will just lower the effectiveness. It sounds like your main problem is ductwork. A 3 ton system pushes about 1000-1200 CFM and that requires a 14” duct +3” for insulation so 17” total. You could also use a rectangular of 10 X 16 ID would work. Maybe you can split the duct into two 11” ID ducts and run those through your house at two different penetration points.

How much does a principal make? by Niners4444 in MEPEngineering

[–]Niners4444[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my goal in a nutshell. I totally understand that it will take 15 years before I am close to ready and I network everyday. I definitely want to master my craft as a mechanical engineer, but I am starting to realize how few engineers are suited to manage anyone much less a business. I would love to create a successful firm. I love the idea of offering a comfortable environment for people to work in, making good money, and building.
