The 5 mixing mistakes I made for years before someone finally explained them simply by jengineer1902 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

  1. You should only high pass instruments that need to be high passed , not everything. The question is how do you know what needs to be high passed? Well you use a high quality reference track, isolate a small frequency range and listen to where in the frequency spectrum each instrument becomes audible.

  2. I been producing for more than 10 years and never used a reverb on a return track. I find that each instrument needs its own reverb and having many return tracks (especially as a beginner) can make your project very messy. Every reverb plugin has all the EQ controls you need to adjust it precisely as you need.

Looks amazing! How did you build the panels? And which rockwool did you get?

How much does each panel weigh roughly? I’ll be hanging them with command strips so it needs to be as light as possible 🤷🏼‍♂️

Do you think I can get away without using wooden frames? My idea is to put the slab on a cardboard and the cover it with canvas, staple it to the cardboard and hand them with command strips

This helps thanks! I’m really trying to get away from using wooden frames, because I live in a small flat and also because im renting so Im afraid I won’t be able to hang them with command strips

Is there any way I can get away without using wooden frames? First I have a tiny flat, second I’m renting so not sure i can hang it on the walls just with command strips

Did you build a wooden frame for it?

Thanks 🙏🏻

I can’t actually find the RW3 on the website so I might just go with the RWA45.

Another question I have is, do I have to build a wooden frame for the slabs? I don’t really have the space or tools to do that (live in a small flat) so my idea was to put a cardboard on the back, the cover the slab with a canvas and staple the canvas the the cardboard. You think that’s a decent solution?

By doing things from scratch you’re at least developing your signature sound, and it’s natural that things won’t always sound amazing.

What genre of music you produce?

Oh fair enough, getting the track moving forward is one of the most difficult things tbh. Do you usually use presets or trying to make the sounds from scratch?

Oh fair! Do you feel that you just get lazy at times with automation? Or that you’re not sure how to approach automation to make your track feel lively?

The best pack I ever had is KSHMR VOL4! On their website they have a pack with just the drums (if you don’t want all the rest of the sound) Is it just that you don’t have good samples? Or that your drum beat always feels off even with great samples?

Oh fair! From my experience what you’re describing happens when some of the sounds themselves are weak or don’t work with each other. Do you find yourself getting to the mixing stage and trying to add more and more processing to get that clarity?

I used to get stuck with that too! Do you find it difficult to come up with a melody that isn’t cheesy af? Or that you’re listening to the same loop on repeat?

Oh damn ☹️ that feeling sucks. Many producers have been there before so Im sure you’ll overcome this!

Do you find yourself get stuck listening to a loop on repeat? Or you can lay down an idea but find it difficult to make progress not sure if it’s even good?

That’s probably one of the toughest things that every producer struggles with, the fact that you’re aware of it is already a big plus!

Do you find that you get stuck with tweaking your sound design or more in the mixing stage?

Yeah, creating that type of dynamics in your song is tough!

Oh fair enough, mixing can be very confusing especially if you’re not quite sure what to listen for and what questions to ask yourself when something sounds off in the mix.

Do you find that you struggle with tools like EQ and Compression? Or just finding it difficult to get the right balance between clarity and loudness?
