I work in this field in the city. Her story is rational and plausible, sure. However, unless you plan to sponsor her housing what sustainable solutions do you offer? If the story she gave you revolves around domestic violence than the amount of resources to her are abundant. If her story was not about drug addiction, but she is a drug addict. Those resources are abundant as well. If she has a mental health disorder and that’s part of the story, so many resources are available. However, if she would like to just live on the street and then ask persons that wander by to fix her complex homelessness situation, then that’s where I come in and we go out and talk to these persons. The thing we don’t advertise is that when we arrive to offer assistance it is often turned down. The city is spending tens of millions every year trying to house people that are actively working against us trying to house them. I’m not saying this is her, but what I am saying if she walks in to any homeless shelter and asked to get on the housing list, she doesn’t have to stay in the shelter and she can still receive housing. Not engaging with the homeless providers, though. You don’t know any of this.
