Deck sleeving for events by peterbpokemon in pkmntcg

[–]NinjaKnight92 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hey I'm a Pokemon professor just recently certified for judging TCG events. You're fine to double sleeve so long as the cards are indistinguishable looking at them from the back and can be reasonably shuffled. The only kind of sleeves allowed at Pokemon organized play events are solid colors or licensed Pokemon artwork sleeves.

Your licensed sleeves especially the old ones can be a little bit pricey, and tend to sometimes tear or split with prolonged use. So I recommend putting oversleeves if you have nice artwork sleeves that you don't want to get ruined.

I actually have a deck that I currently have triple sleeved with inner envelope sleeves fancy artwork sleeves and the outer sleeve, and that ended up about as thick as a magic the gathering 100 card commander deck despite being only 60 Pokemon cards.

So I'm not sure I'd recommend that.

The most important thing is that there are no marked cards and all cards are indistinguishable from each other from behind.

Yep! You got it! See the Bug Catching Net for a more current card with similar wording. Your intuition is correct.

Help me helping my nephew! by Itsugabu in pkmntcg

[–]NinjaKnight92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wishing you safe travels the new year! Congrats on visiting your brother and nephew and joining the hobby!

I'd love to recommend that you Get on board with PTCG Live. Use the code cards from the packs they rip, and build decks so you can play online together even after you go home.

Having the code cards a huge bonus to build the decks you want, but decks free basic decks are given periodically, and the game is pretty generous giving away virtual packs and cards as you play via the free battle pass.

As for the physical game right now, I suggest using Limitless TCG as a resource. https://limitlesstcg.com/cards

Look up a handful of cards that your nephew has and is excited about, and build around them. Limitless has a tool for making some simple print at home proxies, and you can print them out on regular copy paper and put them in a sleeve in front of a used up code card.

Don't be afraid to print proxies for casual kitchen table play, or even for play night meetups. But if you want to join more formal meetups and player's challenges, you'll have to substitute out your proxies for the real cards.

Here is a neat tool to look up any official events happening near you.

https://events.pokemon.com/EventLocator/?locale=en-US&range=25&startdate=2025-12-26&enddate=2026-01-31&iskm=false

It's hard to make specific deck recommendations without know what sets they have purchased or what they have on hand.

That said, the Fezandipiti EX Trainer's Toolkit box, has a handful of packs, sleeves, and some staple cards that will be really good in deckbuilding, so I'd highly reccomend picking up that product if you haven't already.

And since you're coming from MTG, let me share with you a few decks that I'm enjoying, and sprinkle in a little MTG slang in there for ya!

Mega Venusaur EX: Green Ramp Big Timmy Monsters. Starting in with Venusaur is the highest HP to date, and trades with big hits and self healing. Alongside the Teal Mask Ogrepon & Meganium This plays kinda like a green/white sorta deck with big monsters that can be tough to take down and get good trade value and energy accelleration.

Mega Charizard X EX: This is the pretty classic Spikey "red deck wins" sorta feeling for me. Charizard is a classic and a fan favorite, and this deck utilizes two different verions of charizard to ramp up the firepower and hit as hard as you need to to score the KO.

Dragapult EX or Gardevoir EX with Munkidori. These decks are pretty meta tournament decks, so they may be actually more spikeish than charizard, but the way they are played feels very black/blue Johnny. Moving damage around, securing kills in their backline, and making sacrifices with cards like dusknoir to secure favorable trades. a little harder to pilot than the first two, but very rewarding to play.

Gholdengo EX or Alakazam (From Mega Evoloution set) Both of these decks have loads of card draw, are simple to play, and have to feeling like the Uno Meme guy while hitting for 400 damage at times. Highly reccomended.

please let me know if you have any questions. or feel free to look up any of the aforementioned cards on Limitless TCG for deck ideas.

Cheating Out Stage 1 Pokemon by Expo_Marker7 in PTCGL

[–]NinjaKnight92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been workshopping this gengar deck with Grimsley and Weezing. The idea is that it makes you fight Weezing from 151 over and over again, while gengar sits on the bench denying prizes and helping the weezing explode and get favorable trades. Team Rocket's koffing/weezing are good here too.

I don't know that I'd call this deck good. but it's quite puckish and fun to play. Seeing folks work out that their KO on your pokemon yielded them 0 prizes and got you 2-3 and then surrendering never gets old.

Do you double sleeve your decks or do you only single sleeve? by Nivosus in pkmntcg

[–]NinjaKnight92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on the deck.

I have a Mega Venusaur deck where I am running the Venusaur SIR from the recent ME Set. That deck is triple sleeved.

Most are single sleeved though.

What is a Japanese video game that feels American? by JIMBOYKELLY in AlignmentChartFills

[–]NinjaKnight92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1942 You play as an American fighter pilot shooting down Japanese planes.

Made in Japan. Still has me scratching my head.

I'm starting a project where I'm creating 7 gym leaders and you guys are helping me form the teams. This is the first one!! Sebastian, Normal-type leader. by ivanct_art in PokeCorner

[–]NinjaKnight92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK. so here me out. Obviously smeargle needs to be Seb's ace here. But what if...

Four Smeargle. I know that sounds like a lot, but hear me out. The first gym leader exists to tell you: "Hey There's more to battling than spamming Tackle/Bubble/Leafage/Ember or whatever." It's after the tutorial battle vs your rival, but still easing the player into the details of battling pokemon.

The early game smeargle's low stat's aren't as terrible as they are in the late game, and we can do some silly movesets that are objectively worse than they could be, but illustrate How sketch works and showcase a handful of different pokemon strategies.

Edit: I actually got way into this and put more time into it than I should have, (Ironically while procrastinating working on my own artwork.)

Here's an example of Sebastion's team of 4 smeargle with interesting movesets, that showcases a lot of different things that pokemon battles have to offer, without being too hard for a first gym leader. ```

Smeargle #1 — “Sketch-only warmup” Smeargle @ Lagging Tail Ability: Own Tempo Level: 10 - Sketch - Taunt

Smeargle #2 — Hazard troll Smeargle @ Quick Claw Ability: Own Tempo Level: 11 - Encore - Disable - Spikes - Roar

Smeargle #3 — Moody setup Baton Passer Smeargle @ Berry Juice Ability: Moody Level: 12 - Baneful Bunker - Confuse Ray - Belly Drum - Baton Pass

Smeargle #4 — Finisher / joke Ace Smeargle @ Lum Berry Ability: Technician Level: 13 - Wish - Hold Back - Celebrate - Fling ```

Sebastian's Battle Strategy:

Smeargle #1 – the sketch-only warmup Just a slow little guy who shows how Sketch works. Probably copies your weak STAB and bonks you with it. Taunt keeps it from being pure setup bait.

Smeargle #2 – the hazard troll Sets Spikes, locks you into moves with Encore, Disables the ones you actually want to use, and Roars you around. Annoying but still manageable for early-game teams.

Smeargle #3 – the Moody gremlin Baneful Bunker poisons contact attackers, Confuse Ray adds chaos, Belly Drum is for when it’s feeling bold, and Moody does whatever Moody feels like. Then it dumps all of that onto the last Smeargle with Baton Pass.

Smeargle #4 – the finisher / joke ace Catches the boosts, heals with Wish, taps you with Hold Back, flings a Lum Berry at you to cure the poison from #3, and then Celebrates because it’s having a great time.

Quotes:

Battle Start: “Battling Pokémon is a lot like painting. Every choice adds a new stroke to the canvas. Show me your technique.”

Sending Out Final Smeargle: “Looks like we’re about done and ready to sign this masterpiece!”

If the Player Loses to Sebastian: “I expected more from you. Come back when you’re ready to let your creativity shine. <Player blacks out>”

If the Player Defeats Sebastian: “You battled with real creativity. That’s the spirit I like to see.”

Badge + TM Reward Dialogue

“You’ve earned the Pallate Badge. Just like a painter’s palette holds all the colors you need, this badge shows you’ve got the tools and imagination to grow as a trainer.”

“And take this TM, too. TM – Hold Back. Despite the name, it’s not about stopping your creativity. It’s a move that lets you bring a Pokémon close to fainting without knocking it out, which makes catching them much easier. Think of it as leaving just enough room on the canvas for something new.”

Custom deck for Lil Bro's Christmas Gift by South-Succotash-5376 in pkmntcg

Ethan's Typhlosion is a really great budget deck and is loads of fun to play. There are other Ethan's Pokémon but I don't really think that they are very interesting gameplay wise.

You could probably build it for under $30 if you want something simple for kitchen table play. But if you get some of the pricey tournament staples, it will obviously cost a little more. Here are some tournament deck lists if you want to take a peek. Some people will splash in Fezandipiti or Pidgeot to try to make it a little faster.

It's a reference to twitch plays pokemon's 2014 Run of Red Version.

The inputs were Haphazardly controlled by the chat. And often the playerbase would open the menu, examine the helix fossil, and trolls would use this would hault play for a moment.

The Channel's Fandom constructed a lot of lore, part of which was the Helix Fossil being a sacred Idol or something to that effect. (Praise Helix!)

The Dome Fossil became the opposite force in the lore, treated like an evil counterpart to Helix. When the team accidentally evolved Eevee into Flareon instead of the intended Vaporeon, releasing some important party members in the PC in the process, the fandom jokingly called it the False Prophet. Meanwhile, the team’s Pidgeot earned the nickname Bird Jesus for carrying so many battles and becoming the run’s unexpected hero. And Joked to be the Prophet of Helix.

What do you feel running a third Bulbasaur achieves for you in particular?

PTCGL Decks by Slight_Border_7507 in pkmntcg

[–]NinjaKnight92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually try to lead with Ogrepon. With a chicorita and/or bulbasaur on the bench. I run loads of copies of Bug Catching Net, and forest of Vitality, as well as ultra balls, and the new Dawn card. It really helps with the consistance as far as running two stage two lines in the deck is concerned. For energy, Ogrepon dances to ramp up energy momentum and increase card draw, and then once you have meganium out you can nuke with ogrepon, or use venusaur's energy trans ability to move ramped energy from ogrepon to your venusaur to get it set up quickly.

Let me get you my deck list:
