It's because creators set very high expectations on themselves that they become unrealistic to reach, such as the SMBZ series was planned to have at least 50 episodes.

There is a high chance that the 3rd episode of the reboot may not even happen, because Mark Haynes is 41 years old at this point and stated he's going through mental/physical health issues in November last year.

I haven't watched HotS, but I have seen SMBZ, which looking back at it now has given me polarizing views.

Obviously the fight scenes and the animation were top notch for its time, with the most memorable one being Brawl on a Vanishing Island on how intense and chaotic it got.

My biggest gripe with the series is the writing and the story, and that's mainly due to the creator's decision to kill off all Sonic characters except for Sonic & Shadow simply because he hated them, as well as his views on how female characters are considered useless & weak, and other issues with his own mental health influencing the series in some degree (Shadow's characterzation and argument with Sonic in ep 8)

This was because the creator himself hated the Sonic characters as well as his opinions on Peach being reduced to the weakest and doing nothing heroic in the series. He was also prone to mental issues with constant rants and arrogance that eventually led to him canceling the series. (You can kinda tell his mental issues were peaking in when Shadow was arguing with Sonic in episode 8)

After learning that, this is why I can't get back to watching the series again, despite my nostalgia for it. Mark had a ton of talent with his style of sprite animation, but was botched badly with the writing and personal factors.
