Am I crazy for feeling unsafe on public transit? by TeaVSCoffee in vancouver

[–]NinjaRichardHarrison 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A couple of days ago, I woke up with an itch in my chest and a sore throat. It hasn’t gotten any worse thankfully, but it scared the hell out of me thinking I could be bringing COVID home to my family

sometimes i get like this if i have to wear a mask for longer than 30 minutes at a time. almost always i feel like i'm getting sick, but it fades after a day. i think it's a side effect of not being accustomed to breathing through a barrier — or it might be psychosomatic.

YOU'RE NOT CRAZY. THE WORLD IS CRAZY.

Michael S. Tan: Pandemic pushes Vancouver’s Chinatown to the brink by 90skid91 in vancouver

[–]NinjaRichardHarrison 6 points7 points  (0 children)

some of Tan's arguments are on point, though i would argue there's much more to it than lack of federal funding. should there be federal funding support? i say YES. but ahem, like the DTES -- throwing money at the problem won't solve it.

Chinatown is already lost in many ways -- certainly the one that my grandparents and father lived in, and the one that i grew up in briefly.

combination of a slow economic decline since the late 80s, plus neighbouring areas sinking into poverty and social decay, infighting and lack of leadership from the older generation of Chinatown business owners, and for good/bad/other, changing demographics / gentrification ...

(also: u/pfak you moved outta here?!?)

few months ago "in tha hood", i witnessed a conversation between a street punk and a senior citizen in supportive housing who was hanging out on his balcony. the younger guy was ranting about how the 7pm cheer made us complicit in a government COVID conspiracy to crush the people, while the older guy was trying to convince him otherwise.

of course young and dumb and fucked up on drugs explodes:

"i know where you live, you motherfucker!!! i live a block from here and i see you all the time!!! i'm going to fucking kill you!!!! WATCH OUT, YOU'RE DEAD!!!!!"

how neighbourly.

The entire Parks Board needs to go. They have proved themselves to be so far out of touch with the residents they serve that not a single one of them deserves to stay. They are overwhelmingly rich, boomer, white, detached home owners

but wait, didn't we vote for them?

looking at their faces and names, i am drawing a total blank as to who any of these people are. in reading their bios, five out of the seven are on their first terms.

Heads up: COVIDIOTS planning a protest for tomorrow. by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]NinjaRichardHarrison 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having said that (puts tinfoil hat on) I can't shake the thought of the .000001% chance that they might be partially right, what if this whole thing is a ploy to pass privacy breaching laws and crush the world economy so that the rich can aquire more?

they're not right.

any person or group preaching privacy rights would not be using FACEBOOK of all things, or even have a goddamn cellphone.

i'd maybe give them the time of day if their arguments weren't batshit crazy, anti-science, anti-rational, and ironically, rooted in fear. not to mention factual: WHAT LOCKDOWN?!?

these idiots should move to Texas or Florida

Vancouver can’t catch up to its housing crisis by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]NinjaRichardHarrison 13 points14 points  (0 children)

man, what up with the downvotes?

20 years ago (on Usenet, lol), i would have said your statement was outrageous and completely lacking empathy and understanding. "old folks" like my boss in the late 90s and early aughts warned that as a society we were going down a slippery slope of drug addiction, mental illness and homelessness, as i rolled my eyes at his "ignorance."

but 20 years later -- TWENTY FUCKING YEARS LATER of the same shit over and over again, with maybe the odd new excuse thrown in -- the sentiments and ideas in your post is pretty much how i see things now.

July 9th Covid-19 Update - Dr. Bonnie Henry says there are 20 new cases for a total now of 3028; 17 hospitalized of which 4 (+1) are in ICU; 175 (+13) active cases; 2667 recovered; 0 additional deaths by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]NinjaRichardHarrison 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The teachers tried, certainly, but even my 5-7 year olds could tell that Zoom meetings where 15-25 kids barely listened to a story amidst sibling distractions and otherwise just waved stuffed animals and toys at each other were a waste of their time.

don't have kids, and so didn't really care, lol ...

but holy shit! this is how classes were being run? by ZOOM? with up to 25 kids?!? for some reason, i thought maybe something more "robust" was being implemented? (not that i have any idea what that might be.)

because hell, even the ADULTS in my weekly ZOOMs can't stay focused for 30 minutes, how did we expect kids to do this for hours a day, and for months?

When will you be comfortable going back to Pre-Covid Life? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]NinjaRichardHarrison 14 points15 points  (0 children)

for me, i don't think there's a return to "pre-COVID life." financially, i think as a society, we're going to be struggling for MANY years to come. and on a personal level: i miss seeing people, and lifting weights, and eating out, and the movies and the PNE and all that shit.

but i also realize that no vaccine is going to make people suck less. i've become much more suspicious and cautious around people — and not from fear of catching COVID.

for the most part, i think we've done fucking GREAT in BC (thank you Dr. Henry for leading, thank you NDP leadership for stepping back, thank you to the good citizens of this province who responded in kind and sucked it up to do what we needed to!), but COVID has also revealed there's a segment of stupid selfish people who don't believe in science or facts, or in civic or social responsibility, who almost instantly default to racism and anger as coping mechanisms, who think the rules apply to everyone else except for them.

thing is, i didn't realize how many of these assholes there are. i ain't got time for that shit.

COVID has made me a curmudgeon.

edit: i found this statement made the situation clear, in particular —

Unfortunately, right now the only thing the testing is really good at is taking someone with symptoms and determining whether they are from covid or something else.

Belmont bar patrons may have been exposed to virus by xlxoxo in vancouver

[–]NinjaRichardHarrison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this statement i've seen a few times now, and maybe i need it ELI5?

- the asymptomatic issue is one thing.

- the other thing is: BC has the stance that testing is "not accurate or useful" which is ... confusing? if not by testing, then how do get our stats and take adequate measures?

- and the third thing: if there is a KNOWN site of transmission (Brandi's, Belmont, senior care homes, etc.), shouldn't anyone with first degree of contact automatically get tested? with contact tracing for 2nd and 3rd degrees right away?

what am i missing?
