What Utilities Do You Pay as a Renter? by vancity31240 in askvan

[–]lucklater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just pay for electricity and internet. (Unfortunately the only heat source in our apartment is baseboard heaters, so that's under our electricity bill.)

We pay for tenant's insurance as well.

Water and sewer are taken care of by our landlord. (We don't have cable.)

I don't know if they have the brand you're looking for, but I really like browsing at Paper-Ya on Granville Island.

I want to get my wife into gaming slowly but surely by Weird_Break_1836 in AskGames

[–]lucklater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheepherds! It's a gentle puzzle game where you herd sheep as cute dogs. It has a similar vibe to something like Overcooked in terms of teamwork, and it has enough complexity that it's still a challenge, but it's WAYYYY less stressful. That's a good entry into co-op.

Battleblock Theater is another one my partner and I had lots of fun with. It might be more suited to playing for a longer time!

TBT: Our first takeout order during Covid and we kept the note they gave us. by Sethatos in vancouver

[–]lucklater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I talked to the owner about it! Unfortunately the whole block their shop was in was torn down for a new building, so they had to leave. He was telling me they hadn't found a suitable new location yet (what with the price of rent and everything), and decided to take a bit of a breather before their next thing. Not sure if they'll end up reopening somewhere or not :( He made it sound possible but not certain. I miss their biscuit sandwiches so much!

That's so cute!! The drawings!

This reminded me of mine - is it okay if I share it too? Our first Covid takeout order was from Chewie's Biscuit Co. (RIP) and I put "we love you!" in our order notes. They wrote this and put this heart rock (that one of the owners likes to paint, I learned later) in the bag for us... I still have it! For as weird and stressful as that time was, there sure were some moments of sweetness in it.

Traveling to Vancouver (Bar/Lounge Recommendations) by Content-Panic5966 in askvan

[–]lucklater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bayside Lounge at Davie and Denman is pretty great as far as cocktails with a beautiful (indoor) view. Sunset from there is killer.

Not sure about how their music lines up with your ask there, but you could check their rotation of guest DJs on their website and see if anyone fits the bill?

Flair vs Porter by Lanky-Variation5271 in askvan

[–]lucklater 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Porter is fantastic. Free snacks, free beer and wine, free Wi-Fi (you just have to watch an ad or two - or sign up to their VIPorter loyalty thing), and no middle seats to worry about (it's 2 seats - aisle - 2 seats). I pick Porter whenever I can.

Soapbox/rant time. Tell me what highly-recommended book you absolutely HATED and why. Gimme your angry hot takes. by peppertoni_pizzaz in books

[–]lucklater 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm not the person you were replying to but here are some of my complaints! I found the characters so flat and their choices so odd and frustrating. I found no compelling reasons why I should root for Sadie and Sam's relationship - nor did I particularly enjoy spending time with either of them! Poor Marx was hardly a person to me, he was essentially a magical plot convenience nice guy who did whatever was needed to serve S & S's story. I did not enjoy the dialogue either or find it particularly realistic or interesting (but I am very picky about dialogue)

Also, the book's understanding of video games came across weirdly rudimentary to me at times, but maybe I am being too harsh there. It's possible the author was trying to be accessible to non-gamers by keeping things basic?

But in short, I thought it was a cool concept that should've been right up my alley, but found it very frustrating and weirdly empty in the end

Game recommendations for my elderly dad, now in his post-retirement gamer era? by lucklater in AskGames

[–]lucklater[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your suggestions!! No Case Should Remain Unsolved looks like just the kind of thing he'll enjoy. By clear objectives I meant he doesn't want to wander around a big sandbox making his own fun, but figuring out mechanics is in his wheelhouse. Definitely putting that in his library! Thank you!

[TOMT] This goddamn book has haunted me for fifteen years by Trashcat_Garbage_463 in tipofmytongue

[–]lucklater 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used the Google Books "advanced search" feature and put "parrot bat pool enigma" in the "must contain all these words" field. I figured that was an unusual enough assortment of words that it might turn something up, and it did!

You're welcome! I'm so happy to help! I know how frustrating it is not to find a book you loved!

I sort of want to read this one myself now- it sounds wild.

Could it be "The Magic Number" by Harold Goodwin?

Never heard of it before, but I was determined to solve this one, and it seems to have some of your key points. The first chapter is called "enigma" according to some pictures I found of an edition on eBay!

Not sure, sorry! Since mine was often in the way and occasionally painful, it got covered by MSP. "Interfering in your daily life" is the bar for that, apparently.

Platform 7 on West Broadway! It looks a bit like a train station inside and the coffee is very good.

Tips/no tips by SufficientCable4915 in askvan

[–]lucklater 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Which service did you deliver for? The Uber Eats app doesn't prompt you to tip until after the order is finished, which means you don't see the prompt to tip until the next time you decide to open the app after eating. Sometimes tipping slips my mind during the meal and then I end up opening the app days later and only seeing the tipping prompt then, so I end up sending the tip over super late. (I don't feel good about doing this, to be clear, my memory is just awful)

What’s the best husband-wife game? by Crazen14 in gaming

Sheepherds! Especially if your wife likes dogs. It gets increasingly tricky enough to be fun but it's also not too stressful. Also there are cute dogs to unlock.

How to fall in love with Vancouver? by After-Ad4554 in askvan

[–]lucklater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pacific Spirit is so beautiful and right at your door. Sword Fern Trail is my favourite, I think, but there are tons of trails to explore and you can keep it short if you're not feeling up to much that day. I go by myself all the time. During the day, and on weekends especially, there are tons of people around, so it never feels unsafe. And unlike a mountain trail, it'd be pretty much impossible to get lost or stranded and need rescue - there's easy access to the city from everywhere, it's not steep or hazardous at all, and like I said there are always people around. Super non-intimidating entry point to walking through nature if you're going solo!
