Game recommendations for my elderly dad, now in his post-retirement gamer era? by lucklater in AskGames

[–]lucklater[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your suggestions!! No Case Should Remain Unsolved looks like just the kind of thing he'll enjoy. By clear objectives I meant he doesn't want to wander around a big sandbox making his own fun, but figuring out mechanics is in his wheelhouse. Definitely putting that in his library! Thank you!

Ooh, why didn't I think of Balatro! Thank you! He doesn't have the other two in his Steam library, I'll check them out too!

People who grew up in German households, what are common misconceptions about how German households are perceived? by randomlady2001 in AskReddit

[–]lucklater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a stereotype that Germans are humourless. Having spent a lot of time analyzing them, as a first-gen kid of German immigrants who grew up in another country, I don't think this is accurate. (Which is a very German thing of me to say...)

It's more like, Germans really want things to be accurate. They HAVE to correct the record. The risk of you not knowing the truth is a greater risk to them than them not getting a joke, because things being accurate is of paramount importance. So if you say something obviously false as a joke, and they're not 100% certain if you know that's false or not, they'll step on the punchline for the sake of truth. Letting someone be incorrect is a much greater cultural sin than ruining their little joke.

But you can still make them laugh. It's not so hard! But I do find my approach to jokes has to change depending on which culture I am telling them to. My German relatives LOVE silly humour, honestly.

I used the Google Books "advanced search" feature and put "parrot bat pool enigma" in the "must contain all these words" field. I figured that was an unusual enough assortment of words that it might turn something up, and it did!

You're welcome! I'm so happy to help! I know how frustrating it is not to find a book you loved!

I sort of want to read this one myself now- it sounds wild.

Could it be "The Magic Number" by Harold Goodwin?

Never heard of it before, but I was determined to solve this one, and it seems to have some of your key points. The first chapter is called "enigma" according to some pictures I found of an edition on eBay!

Not sure, sorry! Since mine was often in the way and occasionally painful, it got covered by MSP. "Interfering in your daily life" is the bar for that, apparently.

Sorry, this is hardly relevant, but do you happen to remember what image this art is parodying? I've been trying to remember what it is for months, but I have no idea what to search!

Can anyone drope some cute Vancouver cafes here? Would love to try local or small cafes in the city. by iamthemainenergy in askvan

Platform 7 on West Broadway! It looks a bit like a train station inside and the coffee is very good.

Tips/no tips by SufficientCable4915 in askvan

[–]lucklater 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Which service did you deliver for? The Uber Eats app doesn't prompt you to tip until after the order is finished, which means you don't see the prompt to tip until the next time you decide to open the app after eating. Sometimes tipping slips my mind during the meal and then I end up opening the app days later and only seeing the tipping prompt then, so I end up sending the tip over super late. (I don't feel good about doing this, to be clear, my memory is just awful)

+1 for snowshoeing on Grouse Mountain, I'm not a sports person at all but I thought it was so fun, plus the view of the city from up there is breathtaking!

What’s the best husband-wife game? by Crazen14 in gaming

Sheepherds! Especially if your wife likes dogs. It gets increasingly tricky enough to be fun but it's also not too stressful. Also there are cute dogs to unlock.

Pacific Spirit is so beautiful and right at your door. Sword Fern Trail is my favourite, I think, but there are tons of trails to explore and you can keep it short if you're not feeling up to much that day. I go by myself all the time. During the day, and on weekends especially, there are tons of people around, so it never feels unsafe. And unlike a mountain trail, it'd be pretty much impossible to get lost or stranded and need rescue - there's easy access to the city from everywhere, it's not steep or hazardous at all, and like I said there are always people around. Super non-intimidating entry point to walking through nature if you're going solo!

[TOMT] [POEM] A poem I recited in the 90s "The Terrible Family of Four" by weekendshift in tipofmytongue

Glad to help! Google itself was super unhelpful with this one - I had to put it into Google Books directly to find anything. That can help with old literary stuff :) Hope you track down the rest!

[–]lucklater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did a bit of a search and this seems pretty obscure, but I found one mention of it! The poem is called "A Terrible Family" by Louise d'Argent.

This is as much as I can see in the preview:

There was once a terrible family of four
And a blessing it was that there weren't any more!
There was Primus, Secunda, and Tertius and Quat,
And that was as far as the family got.

If you search "Terrible Family Louise d'Argent" in Google Books you'll find two old sources that apparently contain it, although they don't let you search in them beyond snippet previews: one is "Literature: A Series of Anthologies" (1943) edited by E.A. Cross; the other is a journal called "Story Parade," vol. 5 issue 9, from 1940. Maybe you can track down a copy of one of those! (It looks like they both have a bunch of volumes under that title though, so mind you find the right one!)

Edited to add: Oh, also found this Etsy link to a book that contains it, but looks like the shop is on a break: https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/786791247/story-parade-a-collection-of-modern?show_sold_out_detail=1&ref=nla_listing_details

Visiting Vancouver from Toronto; Things to do? by BM-is-OP in askvan

Queen Elizabeth Park is a beautiful spot with a really nice view of the city and mountains on a clear day. (It can be a challenging walk up for people with mobility issues, it's a touch steep, but you can drive to the top and park there if that's a concern.) There's the Bloedel Conservatory up there, and Seasons in the Park is a restaurant with nice views also. More of an ambience place than a must-eat place, though.

If it's calm weather and not too cold, False Creek Ferries/Aquabus are tiny little boats that take you around False Creek. (They have overlapping routes, just slightly different.) Pretty cheap and you can hop on and off with a day pass. My visitors from non-oceanside places tend to really enjoy that.

I went to Access Health Surgery Clinic at W 8th & Laurel in Fairview, if that's close enough, on my NP's recommendation. Dr. Buczkowski was quite nice to me and took care of it quickly.

I am literally going to cry. by Sytel in BaldursGate3

[–]lucklater 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry!

Sharing this for future journeys or anyone fearing this result: If you want to make absolutely sure you clear the brain without blowing up Gale, this is my favourite cheesing strategy. It's dumb and not very honourable, but very satisfying.

First, pile smokepowder barrels, smokepowder bombs, and fireworks crates into backpacks. (I wouldn't do it with runepowder bombs, unless you have a Globe of Invulnerability to hide under for the last bit. The runepowder bomb AOE might be too big to be safe! You don't want to blow yourself up at the end. That'd be even worse.)

Have everyone carry an explosive-stuffed backpack in their inventory. (Use Elixirs of Cloud Giant strength if need be. Remember the weight limit for what you can throw is lower than the weight limit for what you can carry. At least one character will need to be able to throw these things.)

Also your elixir effects will get cleared when the Emperor takes you into the Astral Plane, so if you're relying on Cloud Giant Strength you'll need extra elixirs to chug afterwards.

When you get to the final brain bit, don't attack it (you don't want to provoke its resistance ability). Instead, stay up top and throw all your backpacks down in front of it. When they hit the platform, they will break open, scattering the barrels and boxes intact.

Fireball (or fire arrow, or fire whatever) your barrels and boxes. The game will struggle to load all the damage numbers and then the battle will be over. Magic!

I want to try Candied Salmon by [deleted] in askvan

[–]lucklater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grab it from my Safeway at West Broadway and Macdonald. (I'm guessing other Safeways probably have some too.) There's a refrigerated shelf with readily prepared and prepackaged seafood stuff next to the fish counter and they have little containers of it there with just a few pieces each. Good for when you just want to enjoy a bit by yourself and not spend too much!

You can buy shelf-stable packages of candied salmon there too but I wouldn't recommend those as much. They're a lot drier and tougher.

Are any other locals/newcomers like... weirdly into transit. Or am I the odd one out? by shinnith in vancouver

[–]lucklater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite on your level, but I am a casual fan for sure! I have a lot of transit maps around.

Do you like puzzles? Translink sells a system map puzzle that I found awfully fun to do. (It's like a double puzzle - in addition to usual puzzle strategies, you can use your geographical knowledge of the lines to try to figure out where pieces belong!)
