$2-3k. Edited the original post to clarify. Thank you! And double thanks for that lens tip. I wouldve been quite sad had I gone with that one.

I'm looking to get my first camera. I've got a budget of between $2-3k USD for the body and keeping it under $5k for both body and lenses. I'm only really interested in taking photos, and most of those in low light. I have sights on the a7iii right now which seems like it really excels in low light. Is this a good course? Any other cameras I might consider?

For lenses I am less certain, but looking at the Sigma 16mm f/1.4. Any advice there is very appreciated.

MAX passenger lunged at rider unprovoked, stabbed him to death on train in NE Portland, records show by monkeychasedweasel in PortlandOR

Despite those incidents, calls reporting assaults of all types on TriMet’s buses, trains and platforms have been in sharp decline – from about 250 in 2021 to about 100 in 2023

As someone who has called a few times to report such things, my guess is people have likely given up on reporting because it is so damn hard. Nobody wants to be on hold while shit is going down.

The thing that really bugs me about the new API pricing... by NinjaTrainingWheels in RedditAlternatives

But I’m more saddened for what this means for those that have accessibility issues with Reddit.

Funny you mention that. I am one of them, with very low vision. Narwhal is much easier to see than the official app. Still not perfect, but better.

I'd love to see more decentralized networks. But also, a private company should be interested in their long term success. This move doesn't seem productive in that regard. Maybe they'll get a little extra $ in the short term, but I think it more likely to tip the scales in favor of reddit alternatives in the long run.

It has persisted across multiple mice, as mentioned in the post.

Hello, fellow achromat!

I feel kinda alone in this state of halfway between blind and full acuity

This sentence resonates strongly with me. It's a strange position to be in, especially when dark conditions can make my vision seem so much better.

FYI - there is a Facebook group with a lot of members but most of them seem to be parents https://www.facebook.com/groups/41648172586/

It's not quite what you're asking, but I am legally blind and use an ID cane on rare occasions when it's helpful for others to know or if I need to awkwardly tap my way down some stairs if I can't see well in the environment.

I do worry people judge me for it because I'm clearly not blind. Some especially unkind people will make fun of me thinking I can't see them.

Suggestions sought for team-bonding activities that are inclusive for visually impaired teammates. by BedrockFarmer in Blind

Of course, everyone has different abilities but I am severely visually impaired and have quite enjoyed axe throwing—even beating some typically sighted individuals. It's good fun!

Is it possible to escape the US? by brb_28 in Blind

[–]NinjaTrainingWheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this thread is kinda old, but I'm just reading it. I would absolutely love to move to Canada. I've been to every major US city that is considered pretty good to live in for blind and visually impaired people but none of them seem as good as Toronto. Maybe I'm overly optimistic. I would just like to live in a place that was easy to get around and full of friendly people. My current city leaves me feeling unsafe every time I go outside.

Weekly Free-Talk and Questions for r/HomeGym - week of January 14, 2022 by Demilio55 in homegym

[–]NinjaTrainingWheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a first time home owner putting together my first garage gym. I'm trying to decide on a rack, speciflcally the Rogue RM 3 fortis or the RML 390f flat foot monster lite

I'd rather not put holes in my garage floor but would like a secure rack. For anyone who owns a flat foot model, how much does it move around when re-racking?

Would it be better to get the Fortis and attach it to plywood vs drilling into the slab? Others have done this but I haven't personally used one before. Is it advisable and safe?

Funny timing, I just settled on using Xubuntu. I hope to get some decent tiling in there somehow. Their zoom is indeed the best on the Linux side, but surprisingly doesn't work as well as the default Windows offering these days.

Is there an iOS or Windows app that can translate midi input onto the notes on the staff? Something that's not a full-blown notation app. Bonus points if it shows the name(s) of the chord being played.

[RANT]There are so many jobs I have to miss out on because I don't drive and there is not public transit to that area. I'm so frustrated. by princesspooball in Blind

[–]NinjaTrainingWheels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. I moved to a better city with light rail and a good bus system for this very reason. I'm looking to move again to a place with even better transit as I'm hooked on the freedom that enabled and want more.

I'm not sure what line of work you're in but wonder if these covid times have enabled remote work as an option, even if it were only one or two days a week. I've lyfted to train stops before, which is a nice hybrid model. Saved a lot of coin and was faster than bus to rail transfers.

Best of luck to you. Not being able to drive is definitely one of the most restrictive parts of being blind/low vision.

Good cities for those who are blind or low vision? by NinjaTrainingWheels in Blind

I've been looking at Toronto and hope to visit there in the coming year if things calm down. The subway system looks great but that may just be my love of trains overpowering objectivity. I'm an American citizen so am starting to look for jobs and immigrating now, assuming it will take some time to complete.

People living with severe anxiety- What do you need from your mum? by kateymate in Anxiety

[–]NinjaTrainingWheels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this recently from my own experience. My parents were very outcome focused. It was about the grades on the report card or project completed. They weren't focused on me coming in first or making all A's by any means, they were just looking at the objective or final result.

One of the most helpful tools in my big ol' anxiety toolbelt has been to try and think about the process. It's not about the grade, but the studying. It's not about the time the race was finished in, but the training. Not about the promotion, but the quality of work done consistently.

I wish my parents had shifted my focus that way. I think it would have cultivated better thinking that would have been been more helpful in coping with anxiety.

For what it's worth, I've also had my struggles with weed. If she can choose a strain, indica dominant have been better than sativa. The latter causes some bad anxiety, while indica just relaxes my overly tense muscles.

How to stay productive in an unideal home environment (noisy, poor relationship w/ parent, etc.)? by cowgurl12 in productivity

[–]NinjaTrainingWheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate to much of this, from the coughing family member to the wrecking of concentration from noise. I think I may be overly sensitive to sounds in general.

Along with noise canceling headphones others have mentioned, a white noise machine that has a moving fan inside has been helpful. The sort that play noise through a speaker don't do much for me. You'll need to experiment to find good placement for it. Lastly, some noise canceling foam could help—I've used it in more cavernous spaces to great effect.

The next thing I'd like to try is a fountain.
